A friend of mine knew him at Radio 4 decades ago. He described as difficult and abrasive, but said he was surprisingly popular as he was good at his job and the only person who could make John Humphrys, who was many times worse, behave himself.

His column hasn't appeared in the Sunday Times for awhile - now we know why. Going against the grain, I quite enjoyed his articles. Disagreed with most of it but he wasn't “ behind the door” when it came to having a pop at someone or something. I guess I'm in a minority of one !

Just in case North's answer is a bit too cryptic, he's from SE London. So the question is more why would a Millwall supporter end up in Middlesbrough. Think demographics.
Flawed, like so many of us. But, I always looked forward to reading his articles, even though, occasionally, I disagreed. He was provocative, unconventional and great at shining a bright light on bullshit. I shall miss his contribution to the weekend.
