Jos Hooiveld. He's another one of those players, like Alex McCarthy, who got found out quickly at other clubs, but stayed here, above his level, far too long. Fonte used to have to do the work of 2 central defenders to cover for him.

Saints thought they had made a transfer coup, but Marshall soon showed why Arsenal let him go, scoring an own goal in his debut against Leeds United in a 3–0 defeat on 8 September 1998, repeating this four days later in a 4–0 defeat at Newcastle United.[2]
He never appeared again for Saints and went out on loan to Celtic, where his only appearance was in an Old Firm derby with Rangers in May 1999.[8] Marshall ended up on the wrong end of a 3–0 scoreline, a game which saw Celtic's bitter rivals win the league at Celtic Park.[8][9] This meant that Marshall had featured in just three league games in the 1998–99 season (two for Southampton and one for Celtic), had lost all three and had conceded ten goals.[10] | |

I remember being quite excited when we signed him as an Arsenal supporting friend raved about him and was really disappointed that he'd left
I think he was one of about 5 signings we made in the summer flush with the cash from selling Kevin Davies to Blackburn. Him, Mark Hughes, Stuart Ripley, David Howells and some bloke called Mark Paul I think? None of them did anything of note at Saints though to be fair to David Howells injuries ruined what was left of his career [Post edited 24 Aug 22:02]
