He had been going to Stamford Bridge pre war and would regale me with tales of 80000 crowds and the gates shut by 1, he chose to take me when I was ten to see a relegation battle against Newcastle, there were about 200 geordies there who promptly got a kick in at half time and again at the tube station, my Dad vowed never to go to another game.

I'd have had him in the starting eleven if it wasn't for his career at Stamford Bridge...damn fine defender.

Paul Merson played for Mavericks for at least a year when they went of and joined the Harrow league, approx 1982/83. Before that, he played for Belmont Utd. Mick Bodley played for Mavericks and was on Chelsea's books, until released. He went on to play for Peterborough and one other league team i think. Those two were the stand out players in my year in the Hayes & Harlington Sunday league for kids. MickS did you play at that time in Hayes? My team was Park Lane, WestberksR on here played for Sandgate. We would of been 15-16 in 1984 (cough)…. [Post edited 9 May 2020 14:12]

I played in the same team as Gary Locke as a lad.Trouble is I can't remember what team it was, possibly Brent schools. Also played in the same team as Lee Bircham. Well known Kilburn family are the Birchams. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Never played In Hayes mate. I was at Mavericks for a while but was behind Colin Hill and Paul Fishenden so was never getting a look in. Not good enough. Played for Larkspur and North Greenford Utd . Played district for Ealing when I was younger - Mick Perry was our best player who went to join West Brom - another wonderful player was Dave Gregory who came close as a youngster at Rangers. My youngest son played for Sandgate. They had a very decent side, but nothing touched that Mavericks squad from the mid-late 70’s. Of course it is nostalgic, but they still remain the best youth football team I’ve ever seen. Sent a few on to a good career. Park Lane were strong - did they go on to become Glebe? I am an Ealing boy, but Hillingdon always sent out strong sides .

Willesden - Played in school side where opponents included Gary Locke, Phill(Copper)Holder, Colin Franks amongst others - seem to remember in one of other teams District Locke was a sub. Long time ago now around 1966-67 - school won Brent league and cup double.

I’d considered Holder and Franks but thought more than three subs was pushing it.

Joe Lumley Luke Young Gary O'Reilly - head boy at my school a couple of years above me. I worked with his wife and mother-in-law in Tesco, when I was a Saturday boy - Obviously things were pretty different for WAGs in 1980....

His grandparents live in Ealing so he spent quite a lot of time here as a kid apparently. My parents know them. I think he might have lived here when he was at Chelsea too. Loose connection I know, he'd be a nailed on starter otherwise!

Hi Longbottom - your right on age differences I was a keeper and played for different age groups - funny how teams always struggled to get keepers -in those days schools played friendlies and competition games - friendlies allowed different ages to play in same side. Your also right about the schools they went to. Used to play against other schools Aylestone - Cardinal Hinsley, the catholic school and Christopher Wren amongst others I was at Willesden County as it was then.
