I'm currently watching the highlights from 2000 which is nice, I was there and I barely saw any of the bands they've featured. That year the crowd was massive, 250K plus.
To be positive, no other festival on earth comes close but I since the BBC have paid for it everybody seems to think it is about the music.

Bowie headlined the Sunday night, I must have watched him but I honestly can't remember.

I can understand what you say about no other festival on earth comes close from most of me mates, although they reckon reading and Knebworth were pretty close.
but as you say, not all about the music....

i'll leave you to bowie...at the mo

I went in 89 and 90 before the BBC showed up along with the pHooray Henry's/Henriettas. In 89 it was 60k and in 90 it went up to 90k. I thought it was too overcrowded in 90 and tickets were only £34. Never fancied it since.

Been to Reading a few times along with many other festivals but honestly Glastonbury is on a level of its own. Picture the size of say, Greenford, from the Uxbridge Rd to Sudbury Hill then you have some idea of how vast it is, and it keeps evolving.
I haven't been since 2003 but even in my mid fifties I would still go again.

I used to love Reading as you could get the train back to Ealing Broadway after !!

Been once. Blew me away - and I'm a seasoned festival / gig / club-goer.

Would go every year if I could but it's a lottery trying to get tickets tbh.

What you see on TV (both artists and make up of the crowd) is only a mere fraction of the event. I'm sure there are one or two others around the world that maybe match it (Burning Man maybe? Anyone on here been?) - but the other UK festivals don't come close imho.

am at an age where if i went i'd hire a big F-off american winnibago, which would give me a confortable double bed each night, hot showers, security, outdoor barbeque, onboard glasto on the telly, leather airconditioned interior, cold beers on tap, a place for muddy clothes, and when i felt like it i'd wander down to see whatever i fancied seeing from a closer range.

Bliss!

Went in 1979. Punks and hippies and other trippy dippies everywhere. It was good from what I can remember. Got too big and commercialised for my liking now and like some have said already it's not all about the music anymore. Wouldn't want to go now. Prefer to watch in from the comfort of my old settee.
Enjoyed some of the highlights shown this weekend. Arthur Lee and Love from 2003 looked good on Friday and Toots and the Maytals last night were great to see again. Look forward to seeing Chic's show from 2017 tonight, one the best Glastonbury performances in its history imo. Bowie should be good too.

There aint half been some clever bastards.

I went late seventies when the crowd was only about 25000 if my memory serves me correct - all the hippies used to arrive from Stonehenge and the "atmosphere" was strange smelling shall we say - never used to have to take drugs as you got high on the smell of the breeze.
Back then it was just a case of popping into a local record shop to buy your ticket - don't think I could deal with all the online frenzy or the crowds today would rather remember it as it was

Have to say that does my head in too, and it seems to have become such a trend in recent years. Saw Supergrass at the Ally Pally in March-ish and 2 or 3 people decided to do it there - indoors, mid sized venue, and they were already at the front... I'm genuinely surprised you don't see more people getting wrestled back down.

All of which makes me sound like an old curmudgeon fcuk I know, which I probably am, but still...

Anyway, never been but wouldn't rule it out - would depend on what kind of musical itinerary I could cobble together and whether I could afford the airstream : )

Ah but you remember when we saw Bowie at the MK Bowl in 1983 on the Serious Moonlight tour. What a gig and you wore the classic 82 Rangers Cup final shirt. Icehouse on the bill as well with their one hit single.

Icehouse were sh!t. Single - Hey Little Girl or Strange Little Girl ??

But The Beat, were brilliant and really got the crowd going for a storming Bowie set.

I went pretty much every time it was on from 1993 to 2011.
It changed a lot over those years as the superfences went up and stopped the masses of ticket dodgers getting in which made it safer but definitely less edgier and interesting.
Numerous brilliant experiences there, virtually all of them well away from the main Pyramid stage which if you watch the BBC is their idea of the main attraction of the festival.
Who you go with makes a massive difference: had some of my best ever times with mates, girlfriends, my brother but not recommended as a good place to be sharing a tent with your very soon to be ex wife.....

Probably did not take much notice of the The Beat, not our scene, rock and hard rock stuff my bag. Bowie was the main deal that day, think he played Friday, Saturday and the Sunday. We went on the Saturday. Never been to Glastonbury, did Knebworth aged 15 in 1979 saw the gods Led Zeppelin. Later on went to Donnington a couple of times.

Too big/too many people IMO. Much prefer smaller gigs/festivals (such as Bergenfest in Norway - only 6,000 and absolutely brilliant).

Having said that, me and a mate decided to try to get to Glasto from outside Ealing Boulevard whilst fully charged up at 4am one Saturday morning in the late 90s. We failed.

absolutely mate, i'd rather see a band I love playing to a pub full of people that love them then see a band I like playing to thousands of people.
