An awful start but then we settled and look dangerous going forward when we play it quicker. We have been a bit lackadaisical at times and invited too much pressure. Understandably we have looked shaky defensively.

As in the friendlies, good in possession but defensively vulnerable & lucky to be even; several times players at the back getting in each other's way & caught out under high balls. We gave the ball away half a dozen times in dangerous places. Gilmour and East haven't really clicked yet & Dieseruvwe hasn't won a header. Lots of possession but only 1 shot on target. Hannant & TAR most effective going forward - equally Tranmere are average and as long as they keep missing opportunities we could snatch a win. [Post edited 1 Aug 16:01]

Much as like last season, we were the better team, might've not taken advantage but found a way to scrape through
Overall, i think we'll be fine, providing we don't succumb to too many injuries. Obviously have to tighten up at the back

MoM for me: Bilongo (although only saw second half at Moody Blue). Strong and composed

I have been saying throughout the summer that we need a bigger squad to cover injuries, etc and especially with a difficult game next Saturday at Bradford.
Can anyone answer the following questions.

Agreed.
Another EEL/Sherring mix up and they go ahead again and they should have scored 2 more.
Silcott-Duberry on for Hayes (who never quite got going) and grabs the equaliser again out of nothing.
Playing Gilmour in the 10 gives more MF strength but he's not a natural attacker.
Dale's fighting spirit shows through again but the biggest concern is the Hannant/Petit injuries. | |

First win of the pre-season is an important milestone and will give them as bit of confidence particularly with such an unsettled side.... 627 passes according to the BBC , nearly 3 times more than Tranmere.. still, if we have the ball, they can't score with it! If we can get a settled first choice 11 or so with a solid defence, we will only improve. |  | | |

We need a couple more players. We can’t keep signing people just because of an extraordinary injury list.
Ramming played well. We played 4-2-3-1. Hopefully that will stop any rebellious feelings developing.
I thought we looked ok, still a bit too open at the back but better with three midfielders than a forward as the 10. What pleased the most was that we had much more of the game. Better than the constant trading of the ball seen previously.
Silcott-Duberry will be a big player if we can keep him fit. |  |

Slightly fortunate to win on penalties despite our dominance in possession %. I was expecting us to be more direct this season but we didn't create many chances and Mani had little or no service. We need someone who can play through the lines and I suspect that was Jenkins.
Tranmere were very physical winning most 50:50 balls, and we weren't. They are not a great side and will probably struggle again this year.
Bilongo was good and I thought that Moss was steady when he came on. Hannant, TAR and Hayes played in little patches but without much cohesion. Ramming will be fine once he stops dribbling the ball so often and he looks a decent shot stopper especially from penalties. Will be interesting to see how Silcott- Duberry develops.
Injuries now looking a problem but signings promised.

From what I’ve seen so far, Moss would be starting at CH. He sees danger and covers so well. Unfortunately with all the signings, can see him missing out. | |
