Labour to increase basic rate of income tax by 2% 22:50 - Oct 29 with 5338 viewsPatfromPoole

Seems to be the big story in the news.

Difficult to see how Labour win the next election if this happens.

Poll: Would you take going down to League 1 if it meant new owners coming in?

Cleanest way to get the money in. Has to be cuts in welfare as well though.

They’ll do this, hang Reeves out to dry and then get rid of her.

If you want services, you have to pay for them.I'm ok with that. I object to paying the leader of the council more than the leader of the country though. Linking tax reductions to productivity per head would be a good start and incentives the workforce

You must have this wrong Pat ? She promised not to raise tax ? Surely she wouldn't go against that big manifesto pledge and last budget promise :)

Ironically, I do actually agree with increase in tax, rather than all the tinkering around the edges, with various stealth taxes, If it needs to be done, this is the easiest and fairest way,

Talk of ISA allowance being cut, when we need people to save more for retirement would be a negative move. It would also affect mortgage lending as well, which will impact their (unrealistic) housebuilding targets,

The whole welfare systems needs a massive overhaul as well. The number of people on PIP is out of control.

No coming back from this, if she does go ahead with tax increase. Will be an interesting budget !

That’s not the whole suggestion though Pat, is it ?

The whole proposal is a 2% rise in income tax coupled with a 2% reduction in N I Contributions meaning that those working don’t pay anything additional.

Addition tax revenue will however be raised from those who obtain an income without working.

Don’t think that’ll work as contributions are lower than earnings so net will be an increased payments to the govt

so basically youre saying that older people who have saved for there retirement should bear the brunt of the countries debt. Not saying i disagree with tax increases just put it up to cover the shortfalls across the board would be the fairest way

Yes, it’s suggested that an additional £6bn will be raised but not from “ working people “ thus enabling them to honour their election manifesto pledge at least in part.

I’m not saying anything sledger.

All I was doing was giving my understanding of the proposal which I believe includes the part about reduced N I contributions not mentioned by Pat originally.

The biggest mistake they made, was promising not to raise taxes. They did that to ensure they got in, but if they do it, they will break their manifesto. They should have just said at the beginning on their manifesto that they would raise taxes, to keep services going without having austerity. People would then have had an honest choice.

Just get in with it. The country is skint and needs more money. I don't want cuts with pensioners unfairly having less, the disabled missing out, the.NHS collapsing etc. But there are savings that they have to make too - I.e. sorting out the.immigration system.

Just 20 energy companies raked in just under £500 billion in profits last year. If we had a Labour Party with any balls it would bring an end to this greed and tax on us all. Bring them back into public ownership. Imagine what we could do with that money rather than it lining shareholders and foreign investors pockets.

In truth, I had not heard about the NI reduction when I originally posted this.

Interesting that this would potentially penalise the pensioner age group (who wouldn't benefit from the NI reduction), who are so key in elections.

And imagine a world where the elected government isn't full of ministers breaking their own laws. Reeves who is telling us all to pay more, paid less in her own life by breaking her own government's laws, as did the outgoing deputy PM. All on the swindle, the lot of them right?

Exactly, but it's because it is one party, different colours, same bosses, same relentless path back to feudelism. Get ready to enjoy our serfdom.

I wholly disapprove of what you say and will defend to the death your right to say it.

You'd think that historically, that would be the Labour thing to do.

But no, there are easier targets like PAYE workers, the old, the disabled, the ordinary man in the street.

Couple of questions

Latest opinion polls put Reform at 27 per cent. How does that represent the silent majority ?

And apart from immigration what other Reform policies attract you ?

And finally what are the qualities that make you think makes Farage a good PM ?

Reform Manifesto: https://assets.nationbuilder.com/reformuk/pages/253/attachments/original/1718625

Personally I have no idea if they can or will do any of these things, but then Labour and Tory's never do any of what they promise either, so what is the difference?

Personally I am not a big fan of Farage as a person. I don't like his ways. he comes across as fake to me. I would rather see someone like Yusuf fronting the party. He is a very eloquent and intelligent chap.
