Still playing, made about 50 apps for our U/21 & U/23 teams. After a couple of loan spells he was permanently transferred to Hull City about 5/6 yrs ago, then on to Middlesbrough this season.

Jim Branning leading a singalong at St Mary's is still one of the most bizarre things I've seen at a Saints game.

Obviously you didn't see Jimmy Melia play then.

When I wrote that I did wonder if anyone else would remember the rather surreal half time "entertainment" I think it was a midweek game against Coventry Still this is the club that also had Dennis Rofe singing on the pitch at half time too

Did you see when Jimmy Melia scored once, it looked like he did a lap of honour.
| Larin Is The 3rd Canadian At Southampton FC on 18:55 - Feb 5 with 1016 views | kernow | Based upon his previous honours and achievements with LFC I thought he was a good signing, until I watched him play for us. I’ve never heard a Saints player receive so much dog’s abuse from his own fans. Personally I don’t recall too many accolades as described by Mark. Was he a Canuck? He spoke scouse. | | | |

You don’t get a Division Two champions medal and a Division One champions medal with Liverpool unless you can play a bit. He got both in 61/62 and 63/64 respectively. He was also a very important part of the team that finally got us promoted to the promised land of the top flight for the very first time in 65/66. What he possessed was a wonderful footballing brain that enabled him to pick a pass beautifully. If ever the expression “ Don’t judge a book by its cover “ applies, it most definitely was Jimmy. In his prime, I’d have him in our current team as the first name on the team sheet, he really was that good. [Post edited 5 Feb 18:05]

For our group of late teen reprobates the pre-match ritual was: Hythe Ferry Yomp to ground claim usual crush barrier Buy programme. Check Ref and line-up. If the ref was Clive Thomas of Tonypandy and Jim was starting...Predict abject defeat. It was all good natured banter...Jim wasn't that bad .....he was much phuqing worse. Only joshing ya Jim ( if you're on line)

Melia was thec1st player I recall being frquently slagged off. Wee Hughie Fisher also suffered, as did a bambi legged Channon in his very early days! Back to Jimmy, my favourite memory, was when he scored with a header in an evening mid week match on a very wet and muddy pitch, and for the rest of the match, had a perfect imprint of the ball on his bald head. I think it may have made the front cover of the next home game programme 😳

Ashamed to say I don't recall that event. I envisage the goal coming about when Jim was bending over around about the penalty spot looking for his recently dislodged dentures . Channon then hit a screamer that crashed against the bar, rebounded, hit Jim on the pate and trickled past the keeper. Even the Echo got on Jim's case back then. One match report memorably described him as being " deceptively slow ."
