Southampton 1 v 1 Charlton Athletic

Southampton V Charlton Athletic The Verdict
Sunday, 22nd Feb 2026 09:51

This was Saints chance to post notice of intention, to push themselves right into the middle of the Championship play off melee, the pattern was set early in the game, Saints broke it and scored then let down their guard for 30 seconds and undid all the good work.

Sadly come the final whistle this was one of those games that didn't go our way, but it wasn't just about this game, this was Nathan Jones chance to stick it to his old employers in front of the very same fans who had in his eyes been against him from the very start.

Therefore we saw a far different Nathan Jones side than most that he put out when he was manager here, an organised and fired up team who battled for every point and at the end celebrated what in truth a meaningless point in terms of the Championship table.

Jones had made it there cup final and he and his team could not have celebrated more at the end had this been at Wembley and they had won the FA Cup.

Nathan Jones was a nasty little man in the dressing room at St Mary's by all accounts and looking at the way he rants and raves through games from the dug outs, you have to think that this view of him was true, his behaviour since he has left has not made anyone think we made a mistake in sacking him so early.

But we should have put them to bed, we battered them in the first half had chance after chance and they to their due, put everything in our way to stop them.

Over all we had 23 attempts at goal, 8 of which were on target with 72% possession, no one can complain about our effort.

But Charlton had come to do a job, get everyone behind the ball and go on the break and that is what they did.

When Ross Stewart scored a very good headed goal from a Leo Scienza cross within minutes of the 2nd half restart, you hoped that this would change the flow of the game, that it would open out and give s the chance to get in behind them.

But it made it even more scrappy, Charlton stuck to their dogged task, they did everything to break up the game slow it down and practiced the dark arts of football with enthusiasm.

The lead lasted just over 20 minutes and you could see the goal coming, Charlton had too much time and room on the enge of the box and passed it to Carey who fired home a shot which should have been stopped by Peretz.

Those Saints fans like me who have claimed that Gavin Bazunu should not have been let go unless a "better" replacement was found, had evidence to back that in this goal, if Bazunu had let it in, then he would have been lambasted, Charlton had only one decent effort on goal and two minor ones, yet it seems we are still making the same errors as we have for most of the season.

Once they had their equaliser, Charlton doubled up on everything, fouls, shirt pulling and time wasting was fully on show and they were not going to give it up easily.

So where did it go wrong, I would say that the substitutions didn't help, Charlton were a big side and it was no coincidence, that the visitors scored only minutes after we took off Shea Charles, the visitors were a big strong side , Charles was the one man who had a big strong presence, it changed the balance in midfield.

After the goal we made multiple changes, on 71 minutes we made 3 substitutions, we had upset the rhythm of the side by taking off 3 players at once, one yes, Ross Stewart had done his part, two perhaps, but not three, especially when one of them was Leo Scienza.

We then stopped trying to play through them and reverted to banging in crosses into the box, in the Charlton defence it was land of the giants, not just defenders but midfielders all towering over most of our side, they dealt with anything in the air easily.

Bringing on Cameron Bragg with 5 minutes to go was senseless, with Charlton camped in their own penalty area, we should have thrown a striker on, yes it would have been Cameron Archer, but he has scored late goals, notably at Birmingham City, we could have and should have gone for it.

All the talk as the crowd filtered out of St Mary's was about how we had thrown this game away, the general consensus, listening to those around me, was that the substitutions had been poor and so had the goalkeeper on the goal, I have to say I agreed.

This was a learning curve for Tonda Eckert and hopefully he will look at this game in hindsight and see what could be done better.

However despite the fact that you would have thought Charlton had just secured promotion and we had been relegated, judging by the reaction of both the teams and supporters of each side, this was just a set back, not something terminal.

We need to lick our wounds, learn our lessons and get back to winning ways against QPR on Tuesday.

The disappointing thing about Saturday is what it would have done for us if we had won, we would be in 7th place just a point off 6th spot, we would have closed the game between us and Ipswich in 4th to just 5 points, we would be in the game as they say.

But we are still in the game, we are still just 3 points off 6th, it is still all there to play for, there is a long way to go, I am sure that no one thought that we would win every game between now and the rest of the season, so we have to make this once of those, hopefully rare , occasions when we drop two points.

We have to march on from this and have faith in our team !

What is your problem with Peretz? Obsessive is an understatement. I hope it's just ignorance and nothing more sinister.
He did well getting a hand to the shot. The defence was totally to blame; ball following and no covering the attacjers

Although we didn’t win the amount of action in the Charlton penalty area and 23 efforts on goal makes trips to St Mary’s more enjoyable.
I am inclined to agree with previous comments that you seem very focused on the current goalkeeper and a more balanced view for example the throw out in the second half that sent Scienza clean of the Charlton defence was outstanding.
If we are are to criticise I thought Aziz was poor we all know he will not get any medals for workrate his overall play as the creative player let a lot to be desired.

I viewed Charlton's goal from 45o angle from my seat in the Kingsland. The shot went through a host of players and Peretz saw it late. He only just failed to stop it and I can't attach any blame to him. The fault lay with the defence in front of him who allowed three passes across the edge of our penalty area before shooting. Also, when Bragg appeared he created several of our chances in the latter stages of the game. Even without Archer we should have scored but, we were missing Stewart's height. He should have been left on with the bustling Larin.

A good summary. The game definitely changed with the substations- is Shea Charles not yet able to play a full match? I appreciate the need to keep players fit for a run of 3 games but surely you have to focus on winning the game on hand. Agree with the comment above about Azaz, increasingly a fair weather player in my mind who needs to step up in tighter more attritional games. Fellows is looking short on confidence and needs more variety in his play. He can’t seem to come inside and get a shot away on his left foot, looks too lightweight to do so at the moment. As for the keeper, I was all for replacing Bazunu but in fairness to Nick, Peretz is letting in goals Bazunu would be getting slaughtered for. The Charlton goal was not going to the corner and whilst he probably saw it late, he should’ve kept it out. I like his personality and energy which is refreshing but ultimately he is letting the same sorts of goals.

Let's get it right Only Gordon Banks at his absolute best would have saved that shot
It was a shot that the defenders should never have allowed Three passes across the edge of our box without a challenge or interception
Downes was very lucky not to get red carded for what looked like an attempted head butt
Why do we always criticise the substitutions when we don't win?Ross was pulled because we still need to manage his minutes or risk losing him Scienza was clogged and then subbed ie sensible sub Charles again to help him back to full match fitness
I thought Azazz was a bit off the pace but who else have we got to play that No10 roll?Matsuki maybe
This was our first chance to get into the top 6 It won't be our last Just don't panic

Yet another demonstration that we should sign Stewart to that one year extension straight away.

Downes was lucky to stay on as well after getting drawn in by Coady's shthousery. Azaz had another frustrating game when nothing seemed to come together. Bree was excellent. Should have got that header in the second half tho.

We were well on top. Still on an unbeaten run.

Fair points Bowercow, there is nobody else to play the 10 role really. I’m asking Azaz to step up and show he can be a match winner. Re the subs, it was the substitution of Charles I questioned really. He was controlling the midfield and I totally get getting players but to fitness but surely he can play more than 60 minutes? It does seem as though some of our substitutions our pre-determined as opposed to reacting to the game situation. Anyway time to move on. We needed 7 points this week as a minimum and Tuesday looked the toughest of the 3 fixtures. Now we need to put in a big performance.

Some good points, but when are we going to get pictures that relate to the game we have watched? I’ve seen Leo’s goal at Fratton so many times that I’m getting bored of it now, and Tonda with Leo celebrating with the crowd didn’t happen yesterday. If we’re going to talk about Saints v Charlton, let’s see pictures of Saints v Charlton. I’ve asked this question before Nick, but with no reply.

I felt that as usual after we score we lose focus. we relaxed and allowed a team that were not even in the game get their head and start to pressurize. The left side defensively is very weak with Manning and Scienza and their goal was inevitable. for me I see little motivation from either the bench or on field after we score. Somebody needs to remind the team..." you are most vulnerable after you score." As for Azaz perhaps a couple of weeks playing reserve football may improve what seems to be his " no one to replace me " attitude.

We won’t achieve anything with this manager. Clueless.

We deserved a win, but it came down to luck and the fact their goalkeeper was better than our.

If we are serious about the playoffs then we should be putting the likes of Charlton to the sword! I agree that we do tend to lose focus if we get into a lead. Rather than going for a second and third goal we look to sit on what we’ve got and unfortunately we’re not good enough to do that.

I did think that Peretz should have done better with their goal.

Disappointing yes, but we are now unbeaten in 6 games now. QPR on Tuesday is a must win now, and we have to put away relegated Sheffield Wednesday. There's plenty of points to play for, but we need to finish this week with 7 points.

Just seen the highlights and I agree that Peretz probably should have saved the shot BUT I'm pretty sure that Bazuna wouldn't even have gone to ground in that scenario so saintnick's theory on 'we should have upgraded a GK replacement in the TF window' IMO doesn't stack up given this, plus the back four appear to have more confidence in his ability too.

I don't think it's fair to say "this was a learning curve for Tonda".

We had multiple chances that should have been put away - notably Azaz and others, which would have meant a comfortable victory. For a team that scores quite regularly, we also miss many chances in most games.

Also hard on Pertez - perhaps it was stoppable, but also no doubt his the view was obstructed.

Charlton were very lucky to get a point and we were very unlucky not to win.

What I feel is that we have finally thrown off the Russell Martin mindset and we finally - it has taken a while - look and play like a proper team. And that includes having Peretz in goal. At this level the keeper is not going to save everything but Bazunu always felt like a mistake waiting to happen.

We're not going to face a team with the siege mentality of Charlton every week.

Definitely some split opinions. I thought Azaz worked hard and tried to create.
Gutted that Fellowes didn't hit it first time when he received Scienza's cross.

And what on earth is Manning doing? He was late to arrive to block the shot for their goal. And whilst I wouldn't criticise his effort, I wish he would just play Left Back. It was him coming into the Charlton box to try and head it that took a chance away from Cyle late in the game. I know who I would rather see trying to head the ball in. And with the roving semi striker role he seems to take on, it means that one of DMs has to slot in to cover for Manning's absence at LB. It effects the balance of the side and means other players have to move around to accommodate him.

All in all, it was a great effort by the team. We could have won it. And maybe should have. You can't win them all though and neither should we expect to

So after seeing the extended highlights, it was disappointing to tie, but the summary was right in that NJ and Charlton parked the bus in fear of losing big. As defender of the GK society, as many of you pointed out, they should have never been able to make 3 passes across before the shot. If you watch the replay, Casper Jander moves to the ball even though 2 other defenders are there and the last pass skips by him and he is out of position. After that all the traffic blocks our keeper from seeing it until it is too late. The reaction time from seeing it at about the penalty spot then to get down and even get a hand to it was well done by him.

If we continue to win/tie and not lose games, we will be in the playoff mix at the end of the season. So, on to the next one and let's get a Win. COYR
