Don't know about others but i'm all for players being played in their correct positions myself .
Half our problem is when things go wrong players revert to type, example, if they are a full back playing wide midfield they will naturally start to drop deeper etc,etc .
Clucas being 2 yrds his man is a great example of him not being a natural full back, 2 yrds is
a mile in that part of the field with a cross about to come in.
We need our players to be familiar with themselves and each other at the moment, we ain't quite at the total football stage quite yet !! |  | | |

I'd push Sanches right up there with Ayew and Abraham and see what he can do.We're so passenger like going forward we need all the creativity and help to our striker(s) as possible.We can be as defensive as we want behind these 3 but they're our only hope of a goal as things stand.
I wouldn't write Ki off just yet either.I'm sure he'd be more effective as a more offensive player where he doesn't have to tackle and make 8 yard sideway passes all day.I think it's an option and he's never really been in a position with us to play up top and just behind where he might get chances to smash one in from a Bony or Abraham lay off.

I think that's Paul Clement's main problem, he likes to play square pegs in round holes.
He's killing Clucas at the mo, playing him holding midfielder and full back where he's best at box to box.
It's ok in an emergency, but Saturday he had Rangel on the bench and could have moved Naughton to left back.
He did it last season playing Fer at right back which was suicidal. Playing him for 90mins against Bournemouth and moving him late in the match against Spurs when we had Kingsley on the bench. |  |

I can't stand the cliche 'good players can play anywhere'. You heard managers say it from time to time, and whilst Clem doesn't go that far he's getting there.
Very good players probably can, but average players need to play in their preferred position and drilled to buggery so that everything becomes instinctive. Fine margins and all that, so swapping players, formations and approaches doesn't help at our level, imho.
It's no coincidence we struggled when the back 4 changed every week last season and Clem put things right playing the same 4 week in, week out.
He needs to do the same for the midfield now. Too much choice atm. |  | | |
