How ironic: despite the severe weather up here, the buses on the main routes have been, largely, going like clockwork.

For two days I've been getting to work on time - by bus.

And why?

Because the useless school-runners and commuters who insist - usually without good reason - on selfishly clogging the roads with their tin cans at rush hour, now find their cars are stranded in snow-choked side streets.

Some of these people, rather than lower themselves by using public transport, cry off work, and claim a "snow day".

Others, with more gumption, sneak up to the local bus stop, and, probably for the first time in years, take a chance with the bus. On they get, red-faced, awkward & unsure of the procedure.

At first I couldn't work out who all these new faces were yesterday morning.

Been fabulous here for two days - rush hour traffic must be at 1/20th of what it normally is. Easy run into and out of the city.

So, all those who claim they don't use public transport because it's unreliable and slow, just get the eff out of your cars & do one.

Of course, it's not going to happen - largely because most of them are too selfish, terrified, vain & snobbish to mix with the pensioners, the poor, the chavs & the "estate people" who they perceive as being the main users of buses.

Russell Crowe was great as him in Gladiator.

No mun, Russell played Gluteus Maximus Meridius. Alec Guinness played your man Aurelius and that idiot with the stapled harelip played his son.

Good luck, Mr Cooper

Well, I concede you have a point, half a point anyway.

But don't forget

1. Bus users also pay taxes.

2. Most tax payers begrudge something or other that their tax is spent on.

3. The amount spent on subsidising routes is probably a fraction of the money withheld by wealthy tax dodgers.

4. Subsidised bus routes have, you'll probably be pleased to learn, along with local libraries and swimming pools, become a casualty of austerity cuts. E.g. Recently learned to my disgust that there are no longer ANY buses running beyond the town boundary of Bedford on Sundays or Bank Holidays, not even on busy routes to Luton/Northampton/Milton Keynes.

No more Sunday afternoons gulping real ale and scoffing roast lunches in the beer gardens of village pubs in Bedfordshire for me.

Ones quality of life is lamentably curtailed.

And that my little socialist friend is one of the not so charming traits of the lefty chip on the shoulder mob.

Why would you assume that I'd be pleased that along with local libraries, subsidised bus routes and swimming pools have become a casualty of austerity cuts?

In fact along with other local residents I have helped save our local library destined for the chop by Corbyn's labour locally run authority and help maintain it and carry out regular shifts on the desk for borrowers.

What is your contribution to help save your local library or other local amenity then?

And whose fault is it that your Labour run local authority has had their budget slashed to the point where they have to close libraries?

Well done on you for volunteering. Shame you then feel the need to crow about it and somehow feel it makes you morally superior. One of the not so charming traits of the right wing 'I'm alright so who cares about others' mob...

I'm not crowing about anything just pointing out that some just get on with it whilst your rub of the mill SJW generally whines about it.

And in answer to your other question, whilst the Cons are a disaster, as usual it was the Labour party which has virtually bankrupted the country every time it's been in office which started the whole shambles whilst trying to hide it's debts off book with PFI schemes which is why it apparently costs £450 to change a light bulb in many public facilities and buildings.

Might I also remind the virtue signallers that borrowing £13bn ( plus £10bn net to the EU ) to hand out to other countries libraries, subsided bus routes and swimming pools doesn't exactly help when it comes to funding our own priorities.

I applaud your voluntary work in the local library (seriously), but am usually too done in from long, knackering shifts to do likewise.

However, I have (virtue-signalling)

(1) just spent 5 minutes finely dicing a large, red, Italian apple, before scattering it on the snow in the back yard for the local birds, accompanied by two low-rimmed bowls of water, one for drinking and one for bathing.

(2) given a £2 coin to a shambolic, desperate Asian lad in town, who should really be in some kind of care: glove-less, hat-less, busted nose, coat agape, mumbling wretched nonsense.

That's my lot for good deeds today.

Clearly, I'm going to heaven one day.

Thank you. Although to be fair, if someone is using 'SJW' and 'virtue signallers' in their posts, you know they're not really worth engaging in any kind of debate.

Also, obviously the same applies if someone who's more to the left starts calling anyone with a right wing opinion 'racist', 'snowflake', or whatever other insults are popular to use just because someone disagrees with them.

"One of the not so charming traits of the right wing 'I'm alright so who cares about others' mob... "

I'm afraid you have bought into the left wing propaganda on the right wing position. Either that or you're dishonestly representing it on purpose, which I don't think you are. I don't doubt there are some right wing people with that attitude but that is not the point of the right wing position. It's very easy to think Your side are the caring people and the other side differ in their opinions on how to fix a problem because they're hateful.

The economic argument basically comes down to:
Give a man a fish and he'll feed himself for a day (left wing)
If a man learns to catch his own fish he'll feed himself for a life time (right wing)
These two positions are both trying to help the man. But remember...if a man learns to catch his own fish, he no longer needs to vote for the guy giving him fish for free. So he stays in poverty, barely surviving, on one fish a day. Maybe if he learned how to fish he could be catching 5, 6, 7 fish per day.

IMO, the left (#notall) stopped arguing the points and started saying "Arrgh...the right don't want to give out fish because they hate the poor and they really hate black people. Vote for me and I'll keep throwing you the odd fish because I'm so caring and definitely not because I'm buying your vote". I believe nearly all left wing voters want to help the poor and see their way as the best way. Left wing politicians? I'm not too sure about those chaps, tbh.

I recommend you listen to Thomas Sowell (pic. below) speak about the negative effects of left wing policies on the black communities in America. His position is not 'Don't give them hand outs, coz I'm OK so f*ck em' his position is 'The hand outs are crippling whole communities and causing far worse problems than what they were intended to fix.'

But rather than tackle his points they just dismiss him as an 'uncle Tom'...because they can't dismiss him as a racist who hates black people.

Good luck, Mr Cooper

Eating fish will kill the man because he's a natural herbivore.

The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

You keep conflating left wing and liberal.

The fish story is overly simplistic. People like Trump believe in giving those who already have all the fish more and more fish until eventually they run out of things to do with them and might scatter some fish pieces on the ground for the poor to pick them up. Trickle down fishing if you like. Others believe that a man should learn to fish but don't allow him access to water or anything with which to make a fishing rod. They'd rather have so many fish they can't possibly find a purpose for them than share them with anyone that's starving. Because they think those that are starving are that way because they are lazy, or stupid, or just less than they are.

I agree with the point about handouts. Handouts don't work. They create a dependency. There's also a very real danger that the handout comes with strings.

Thomas Sowell is American. Today in America they refer to the left as liberals. What we (UK) and historically was known as liberals they now tend to refer to as 'classical liberals'. I have heard Sowell say that quote and it is while he's criticising Socialism and social programs. But I do find it annoying on times, since there is nothing 'liberal' about the American left (progressives/SJWs) of today.

TBH, Lisa there is not much in the rest of your post that I disagree with. Maybe you missed, or I didn't explain, the point of my post too well. If you want to believe in one economic system and me another, then fine. The point of my post was to knock down accusations of malicious motives behind one set of beliefs. Too many times I hear things along the lines of "the right/conservatives don't care about the poor/black people and don't want to share their money" by people who believe in social programs or handouts. Where it's normally (not always) a case of people thinking these things don't work (as you just said about handouts) and often make the situation worse for poor people. If someone were to listen to Mr Sowell you would find a black man, born in poverty, who is of the opinion that social programs are there to benefit the politicians who put them in place. Whether they think he's right or wrong, I don't think they'll find a man who doesn't care. Look at you, you agree with handouts not working. Do you not care?...I don't believe that to be true. Should people on the right start saying "you lot hate poor and black people and want to see them caught in a welfare trap...". I believe that to be a nasty tactic myself.
Also, this is not me having a go at JackSomething. IMO, he used a throwaway line, a belief I subconsciously use to hold myself. I just used that opportunity to highlight it.

Good luck, Mr Cooper

Sorry to necro this thread, but I was actually just irked by Barry's doing exactly what you have suggested I was doing and just wanted to reflect his own viewpoint back on him.

I don't really believe that everyone on the right side of the political spectrum only cares about themselves, just as I don't believe everyone on the left does care about others.
