I think the middle ground is currently occupied by what is now labelled as the right.

I have never been labelled right wing or even far right until the last year or two and I have always thought of myself as pretty liberal.

The paradigm of the left has become so narrow that in order to qualify for it you pretty much have to leave all common sense and reality at the door.
