God only knows how those soldiers have suffered under this cloud for almost 50 years. A filthy ,dirty war where they were hung out to dry by a succession of British Governments. That day is of course now folklore in Londonderry and the IRA supporters are of course livid with the decision.

The security forces have the right to use justifiable force to protect innocent lives. If the IRA did not want to get arrested or shot when committing terrorist acts then they should have tried peaceful means. By the way if they thougt it was why did they murder british soldiers and irish policemen when they captured them. That is a war crime. You can't have it both ways, particularly deliberately targeting civilians and children another war crimes.

The republicans would probably say they had the right to use justifiable force to protect innocent lives as well, in fact I think that is what they did say after Bombay street. From what I have seen, documentaries and the like, lots of them were happy to fight the good fight and take the risk of being shot or arrested for their cause. Targeting civilians and children is definitely a war crime in my book, but that counts for both sides mind you. [Post edited 1 Oct 2020 18:07]

I had a section that had a recruit from the Bogside ,a catholic who came here to get wed and join the British army. He served in NI and really what he said was incredible but what was striking was when we went for a post shift drink he always had his back to the wall and always checked who was in the pub.He never ever relaxed. And yeah, the filthy war, where Republicans used women and children to lure young and the more gullible British soldiers. They were sent in to protect the very people that turned on them. And the UDA/UVF just as bad. |
I'm not surprised he had his back to the wall, Liverpool and the Wirral were said to have housed IRA bomb making factories, Liverpool even voted in an MP that was an Irish nationalist, I don't mean sympathetic to the cause but stood for a real Irish home rule party on mainland Britain and Liverpool voted him in to Parliament as their MP. If they did not get Warrington and Manchester bombers they should have started by looking at Liverpool and the Wirral, lots of them were said to be English born as well, second generation immigrants probably and you choose to live in that part of the World with your views, blydi hell. Nothing about the north of Ireland is plain and simple. So you think that the republicans of the north of Ireland are somehow born terrorists ? Yes ? no ? Because if they were not born terrorists, then something or someone made them terrorists ? I am deliberately using your terms. What do you think might push normal people to such a state that they are prepared to pick up arms and fight the Crown Forces ? I dont feel like that, you dont feel like that ... so why did these men feel it was their only option ? An option that risked their lives and freedoms. Why ? And dont you think its important to recognise that it was the removal of Crown Forces from the north of Ireland that helped deliver 20 years of peace. Pouring more soldiers in always made things worse. Under the GFA a person born in the north of Ireland can be British, Irish, or both. And that worked for almost everyone. There can only be War crimes in a war. Both sides. You are not helping the old soldiers cause by saying it was not a war. Thats their defence gone right there.

Once the IRA was infiltrated by the UK security services and knew they would probably be killed in any shoot out they stopped volunteering and the IRA and sinn fien leaders knew they could never achieve a victory by force so were forced to negotiate for a peaceful solution.

What is ironic was ,despite the hatred and the way we were beastly to them, they still flocked here away from the life long, yearning poverty of rural Ireland. What chokes me is the fact that the majority of killings were never brought to court. Only punishment was meted out by the paramiliataries

Rubbish. Only one side was fighting for money. And you called it wrong. The deal that the Republicans got makes a united Ireland possible within a generation. If a straight majority in the north want it. It will be the first part of the uk back in the EU.

Rubbish that terrorist killed people. The IRA who kneecap any Catholics who they deemed to be breaking the rules and refusing to pay protection money to fund the gangsters.

Strange my family came from Cork and were grateful for the opportunities afforded to us in the UK. In particularly the community in Greenhill and the Hafod. We never hated the British and always believed murder and terrorism are wrong.

When the Welsh was fighting the Germanic hordes the Welsh noted that the English fought for land, possessions, money etc (which is the case with most invaders) whereas the Welsh was fighting for their family, friends, culture, way of life. That seems to be the story in Ireland, there was ruthless gangsters and criminals involved (on both sides) but whether you agree with the paddies or not they did have a 'cause'.

The people of NI wish to remain part of the UK it is their democratic right. Does not matter if you agree with it or not.

It's an artificial construct though, its like the people of Bradford wanting to be part of Bangladesh or the people of Leicester wanting to be part of Pakistan or the people of Cardiff wanting to be part of Somalia.

It all belongs to Wales up as far and including Strathclyde, immigrants came to Britannia with their foreign ways and traits and call the shots in what is now known as England.
