Not knocking Hamilton, his records or his achievements which are immense but I do believe the standard of competition has dropped since Schumacher was in his pomp. It’s just a procession now, there’s hardly any overtaking, no risks. When you think back to those epic moments where someone like Senna and Mansell would be giving it their all and sparks would be flying everywhere, you just don’t get that now.
Obviously on the plus side hardly anyone gets killed or seriously injured anymore but the sport is just boring now. |
Meh, I’d question ‘a drop in talent’. Schumacher had to battle Hill, Villeneuve and Hakkinen (the later being the standout by far) usually in superior cars to his. Broke his leg in 99 but would have likely beaten Hakkinen that year judging by how close Irvine got. Outside of the top 2 or 3 drivers during the mid-late 90s there was no one special. I don’t think he raced Senna/Prost/Mansell long enough to compare, plus he was young. He did do well against them though.
In the early 00s he had Montoya and Räikkönen, then Alonso to deal with, but outside of those lot there wasn’t anyone particularly outstanding. Drivers are almost ‘bred’ for formula one now. Hamilton beat Alonso as team mate in his first season and has had Räikkönen, Vettel, Verstappen, Button, Ricciardo, Schumacher mk2, Leclerc, etc to deal with...the younger ones being touted as future greats.
You can’t really compare drivers too much because there are so many factors, machinery being one. The best drivers always end up in the fastest cars for a reason though. Hard to compare eras, but Hamilton is certainly the best of his generation. [Post edited 19 Nov 2020 18:24]

In his debut season Hamilton took on the reigning WC in the same team and unsettled him so much he joined someone else one year into a three year contract. He's also faced a multiple Champion in Vettel and utterly ruined him over the last six years. I'm not sure the "not as much depth" argument holds water.
The total dominance of the Merc in Hamilton's hands over the last two years has perhaps overshadowed how close in terms of performance (and arguably superior in one or two seasons, certainly over certain circuits) Ferrari and Red Bull usually were prior to 2019. [Post edited 19 Nov 2020 19:34]
