A truly tragic story that has reached its inevitable conclusion.
A lad from a very poor background with an extraordinary talent. Apparently generous to a fault with others but self indulgent with drink drugs and prostitutes to such an extent that he was in hock to the Neapolitan mafia.
Although revered in his native country and Naples, after he left Argentina he picked up a cocaine habit in Barcelona and was using continually in Naples when they won their titles. Drug testing was not what it is today and drug testers never picked him; or as a Napoli club official allegedly said, if they did, someone peed for him.
His time in Europe is tainted by drug abuse; he was sent home from his last World Cup in disgrace for failing drug tests; accordingly he will never be a great in my eyes.

Black Lives Matter kneeling has gone on too long, I agree. But criminals? Maybe the kneeling does need to go as its educational message has fallen short. Drug dealer, drug abuser, )probable intravenous), drug test evader and linked with the mafia also make him a criminal. Through his behaviour on and off the field, he also brought national shame on Spain and Italy with close monitoring in his homeland. As I said, great player but never a hero.

We are reading hypocritical ,sentimental,disingenuous tripe -AGAIN.
It is fair to suggest however that his achievements will always be clouded by the fact he was banned several times and thrown out of the World Cup for doping. History has not been kind to other athletes who have been caught using drugs whether to gain a competitive edge or recreationally. I think to be considered a great sportsman not being a drugs cheat should be a given.
