This is also know as, monopolising the market! It is happening at all levels...MPs and their mates lining their pockets.... From newly set up companies supplying inadequate PPE to track and trace (£17 billion for an excell spread sheet) to this. Literally taking food out of underprivileged children's mouths to make a profit. Instead of £30 vouchers for ten days worth of free school meals, the government has outsourced free school meals for England’s most vulnerable children, to a catering company called Chartwells. This company has replaced the £30 vouchers with (ASDA pricing) £5.22 worth of food, for the children. The picture below is provision for a child for 10 days: Bread 89p Beans 85p Carrots 15p Apples 42p Potatoes 22p Tomato 11p Cheese £1.45 Frubes 33p Pasta 10p Soreen 40p Bananas 30p Public funds are charged £30 for each of these £5.22 packages. This means the company is profiting the difference, of tax payers money. Chartwells chairman is a donor to.....you guessed it, the Conservative Party.

Of course, but Brexiteers gave us this Tory government so they have to keep pointing out there’s bad on both sides. Can’t own it see.

The Chartwells boxes are £15 for five days, not £30 for ten days as reported. Complete boxes also include tins of tomatoes, tuna, cucumber and lettuce. Still rubbish mind, and I topped the boxes up with help from our local supermarket, but not as bad as what is doing the rounds.

They are still skimming off the true cost to the taxpayer and this government know it. As usual the real honest giving people of this country come to the fore, great gesture by the supermarket

After reading Gwyns post it seems someone on facebook has exaggerated...well lied, to make things look worse so they can attack the tories. Not unusual for political zealots to lie for their cause. Of course as Gwyn says, these boxes still weren't good enough and it's good news something has been done. Well done Marcus Rashford and Jack Monroe.

In fact it is a £10 free school meal box designed to last 5 days, with that £10 including the cost of picking, transporting and distributing the box to the child. It's not fantastic and I hope the local authority who hired that firm are investigating, however it is a lie to say it is £30 (two weeks) worth of free school meals.

The health secretary has refused to say he regrets voting down free school meals in the summer despite now saying he is "glad" children are receiving support. Matt Hancock was grilled on Good Morning Britain about his previous decision to reject the plan amid anger over paltry food packages sent to families during lockdown. Images posted online showed the packages containing just a few items, despite being intended to feed children for up to a week. Hancock told host Piers Morgan: "I'm really glad we're able to send out food for those who receive free school meals when schools are in, and I'm really glad we're able to do that when schools are out." But Morgan quickly reminded him of his decision last year, saying: "If you're that glad, can I ask you a question, why did you vote against it?" Hancock did not directly answer the question and continued to say he was happy the government was offering school meals. When pushed again the health secretary stuttered and added: "Well... because... the reason I'm glad now is because we've been able to sort that out and put it in place". Co-host Susanna Reid then interjected: "No thanks to you!" Morgan added: "Let's be honest you got shamed into it by a young football player with a conscience who managed to prick the conscience of you and the government." He asked Hancock again if he regretted his decision, but the Tory MP refused to give a clear answer.

I don’t think it was fake news. Many schools were light on their allocations so boxes went out light in some cases - the company blamed supply issues due to Brexit yet the fee was fixed. The charge to schools is £15 per box per week. Compass say it’s £4.70 for other costs and £10.30 on food. Better than the photo but still pathetic.

It is designed to last for five lunch time meals. Not feed a child for an entire week. It's certainly enough to create five lunch time meals from. However I'd argue it is not value for money and it is surely better to provide parents with supermarket vouchers for a loaf of bread, a filling, fruit and water instead of sending them this at a cost of £10+ each.

Why on earth should any voucher cover water. It is free from the tap.

Never mind you may be able to scrape together 5 meals from them, they are supposed to be a balanced and nutritional selection. Absolutely scandalous state of affairs, greedy companies profiteering from others misery. It's 2021, and there are children going without the basics in this country. Don't forget, your Tory Government voted against giving them free school meals in the beginning, it's only because a young footballer keeps shaming them via social media that they are displaying faux outrage.

My little town has gone to the dogs over the last 20 years, but to see the community coming together this past year has been nothing short of amazing. Just one recent example of what they have been doing, the community have been donating money and food to a group of local volunteers, who are cooking and delivering hot food, every single day, to EVERY child in the town.

That’s fantastic to hear 👠Sad that people need to do it though, isn’t it? I can’t get my head people getting their knickers in a twist over feeding kids. I can only put it down to miserable people wanting others to be miserable too. Look at the flak Marcus Rashford has had 🙄

It's disgusting, and nothing short of a national scandal. And when i hear people say things like "Ah but if their parents didn't smoke, or drink, or use a mobile phone they'd be able to feed them". And that is the child's fault!? Do we just ignore them and say tough? What goes through some of these people's heads. We live in an awful, selfish time.
