Never again. He didn’t want it today and bottled it completely.

Not good enough to start for us, not even close.

With all due respect you’re very wrong there. Smith has been sublime in parts this season , always competitive and a good eye for a pass for a DM. He along with Grimes and Fulton are our best midfield. If we still had MGW I’d play him instead of grimes with the other two backing him up.

MGW performances showed way more than Connor Hourihane has for us and he only played a handful of games. We don’t have special teams in the EFL so Hourihane has to start on the bench every game

You were doing so well.

Matty gets dropped for no one in this team. He's been head and shoulders above everyone else all season. Without him we'd be an egg side.

He's been pulled out of the Irish squad with a hamstring injury.

Strangest confirmation i've ever read.....

----------

And it has been confirmed he will not link up with Republic of Ireland for their World Cup qualifiers against Serbia and Luxembourg.

“I am not sure of the extent of his hamstring injury,” said Cooper.

“He has come off, but I am not sure how bad it is, that we will find out over the next few days.

“It seems he might not go away, but I don’t want to rule him in or out at the moment.”

The submission that Grimes is undroppable proves our midfield isn't operating effectively.
He has been slightly better of late ( my mom in one game) but mainly because we have been under the cosh and he’s forced to be busy defending in a limited area. He also gets busy when winning the ball back after giving it away cheaply.
Going forward he slows everything down .. the occasional good forward pass rarely achieves a goal scoring position for. a forward because half didn’t defenders have read the pass.
A decent player weighed down by captaincy but leaves on field leadership to others.

Poll: Should the summer transfer window close before the season starts?

Not one single professional footballer would agree with you and that would be the exactly the same with Matty's team mates.

They know who's Captain because he is relentless from the minute go until the final whistle.

He never lets up, he's on it the whole game. He never shirks a tackle, never not shows for a ball or goes hiding, he is the driving force and is knitting our team together in what little football we play these days.

Without him we may as well give up as virtually no one else can take a pass like he can. Smith or Jay know who's Boss around them and they don't even try to take on anything like the responsibility Matty does.

He ain't perfect and I respect fair criticism but this absolute drivel about slowing us down needs blowing to smithereens.

Matty doesn't slow us down, I'm sure that was some guff Dr Winston once wrote so sheep just repeat it. It's nonsense.

What slows us down is Cooper's gameplan and where he wants his players on the pitch. He doesn't want the 3 in the middle anywhere near each other so Jay and Smith often look like they are hiding.

You can't speed up a pass to one of theirs.

Ayew and Lowe have also been pretty much disconnected from midfield most of the season so Matty, when he's taking that ball off one of the CB's and turns and looks who's on - rarely is there anyone.

So you don't lose the ball there. You at least try to keep it and switch play hoping to pull them apart.

But that's another thing a Cooper side doesn't do. Usually when it hits Guehi or Naughton/Cabango or the wing backs they chip it into no mans land down the channel for Lowe. It' pretty basic stuff that's been trained out of them - not into them.

This happens in every game we play.

We made 368 passes against Boro - guess how many of those were played between our central midfielders. 4 of them in total until Smith went off...

29 - 8% of our whole passes were completed among our 4 midfield players.

Against Blackburn where we attempted 324 passes as a team, our midfield 4 that day (with Yan and Smith coming on for Jay and Hourihane....

10 (ten!!!) = 3%

This is the problem.

Grimes is one of the best defensive midfielders in the Championship, and has been for approaching three seasons now. We've got no one else who screens the defensive line so effectively and energetically.

Creating chances in the final third has never been a strength of his game, for all this myth that persisted among some Swans fans that he's an attacking midfielder being forced to play out of position, and that he would be moved forward once we brought in a "proper dm".
