Anyone who was around football in the 80's & 90's will be aware of the behaviour of football fans (& the police) in those days.
It is awful people died but it was a disaster waiting to happen.
If I was a Liverpool fan who travelled to that game without a ticket Id be living with a pretty guilty conscience as I would be if I was a cooper who changed my statement to ensure the blame was passed to others.

Coopers changing statement, thats the bottom of a very stinky barrel being scraped.
Seriously, I couldn't believe what I heard on the news, they justified changing statements by saying they were changed for the Taylor inquiry and didn't think a criminal trial would happen. What justification is that? But the judge bought it all the same, some might say the judge is bought and paid for, some of the families certainly didn't think it justice and neither do I.
The establishment got away with it, they always look after each other. | |

Even 15 000 saw our beauts in a bubble game strut their stuff.
One of my Merseyside officers was at Hillsboro.He was the one giving CPR on the advertising hoarding. He lost the lad .
He left the service soon after.
A good lad gutted by it

No not every fan had a ticket but as you say in the 70s and 80s fans travelled without tickets all the time it was the coppers fault all day long opening the gates for a start for a mad rush and then hitting people with truncheon s and sending them back over fence when it was clear people getting crushed to death and not opening gates to let therm on pitch..and they getting away with it with corrupt system..looking after each other it stinks | | | |

Make you winder Keith if in those days,fans could have policed the games themselves and that would have avoided the "pigs" bashing the crepe outta them,stitching them up, or simply killing them.
I remember fans to be often horrendous wrecking town centres and stadia .That wasn't police doing that. It was football fan and football a a whole was shameful.

The police were totally and utterly incompetent, but the cover up was shameful, no excuse, was it hundreds of statements changed ?, the press were a disgrace they castigated the fans who were innocent.

Fans behaved as fans did back in the day. I won't argue that deaths were caused by selfish fans determined to get in th ground by any means but even so, what happened was a direct result of poor policing.
One look at the terrace would have been enough, it was rammed and there were many more outisde trying to get in than were already there. Opening the gates and basically encouraing a free for all was catastrophic.
Trying to lay all the blame on the fans was cowardly. It was self preservation. None of the fans outside knew what was happening inside but the police could see it. The ordinary constables followed orders, their bosses made the bad calls. | |
