You obviously are firm in your head but you need to make things a bit clearer Doc as you are not explaining things well enough, might sound right in your head but I think you needed to put that Martinez had seen him play before he signed him rather than Martinez knew of him before hand.
The main thing to this story is that good old footballing knowledge is not dead and stats albeit are the way that most clubs are going don't always work.

The first two sentences you laid out are the same.
Before hand = before he was signed.
Seen him play and as a result wanted him = knew him.
As for stats, stats are there to be combined with what you see. Its very often what someone sees is shown to be incorrect by stats, its rare that what someone sees shows the stats to be wrong. I am yet to know of anyone that watches stats only and not the games, seems a bit of a red herring.
For example we had a discussion regarding Cabango playing the majority of his games in the center of the 3 defenders. Stats showed that to be wrong, it was an even split.
We had another discussion regarding the team having less possession when Cabango played. Stats showed that to be incorrect.
We had another discussion that when Rodon and Cabango played it was Rodon that made the runs past halfway, stats and heat maps showed that to be incorrect.
A lot of the time people see what they want to see, stats have no bias. | |
