| How do you feel with the new season so close ? 16:47 - Aug 4 with 2246 views | KeithHaynes | Personally for me it’s one of much trepidation, a seemingly positive and intelligent management and coaching team but clouded by what I see as one of the less talented squads I’ve seen in a good few years. Very young in too many areas, either primary or back up. But I’ve got a feeling it could be the start of something very good, IF we allow that word ‘ patience’ to creep in to our vocabulary. | |

Well we don't know if he's up to the task of being a championship number 1 do we? As I say, he's going to have to have an unbelievable season to get anywhere near what Woodman achieved

He looked braver and more decisive on Saturday than Woodman to be fair.

He's been here for a number of years and we'll regarded for all of them. Had an exceptional loan spell to gain experience and came back ready to fight for a first team place. He had no chance of doing so due to Cooper's fetish for England u17's but he's certainly not an unknown quantity. He will make mistakes because young keepers often do, but so did Woodman. At least with Benda we're developing our own player.

I’m pretty sure Jasper was being sarcastic doc. I’m pretty confident Benda will have us all wondering why he didn’t start last season. But we shall see. Woodman had terrific stats in terms of clean sheets but with a top defence in front of him and a team playing a defensive brand of football, I don’t believe it would have been any different if it had been Benda instead of Woodman.

Ah yes. That'll teach me not to reply to stuff at silly AM. Nuance muscle hasn't kicked in yet. I was wondering why Benda wasn't starting last summer, before Woodman continued to demonstrate how average he is. Massive black mark against the Ponty Goblin for wasting a year of his developmental time.

Intend to agree with the Doc - I’m usually a bit of a happy clappy when it comes to our players but I have to say to me it looks thinner and weaker than it has for several seasons. You mention that we’ve only lost Ayew and Guehi and possibly Grimes, but add Woodman to that and whether you rate any of them or not, that’s the spine ripped out of the side right there. That said, I’m nervously excited. Blackburn is going to be a good indicator of the way this guy is going to want to play but I don’t think the result will necessarily be an indicator either way, and although I’m a little worried about it I also checked the sort of summer Blackburn have had and although they’ve had managerial stability they seem to have lost more players than us with pretty much zero incoming, so that’s good news. Can’t wait to get back in the Liberty with my boys. [Post edited 5 Aug 2021 7:08]

As you say we have lost, or about to lose the spine of the team. First choice keeper, best defender, best midfielder/captain and best forward. Plus without CR to start the season and Fulton suspended. Some are really going to need to step up this season and pretty quickly. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Woodman & Cooper both hugely benefit from assessment by stats & league table performance vs watching them play/coach. On statistics alone they are, at Championship level, top drawer & from that perspective we’ve lost/let go of key performers. That said, for me, it was the right thing to do & we needed to move on - even if that means going backwards in results/league table terms. PS would have to add the one aspect of Woodman’s style that I did like was his penalty saving technique, best keeper we’ve had for a while in that area.

Pity he couldnt save the one he gave away in the play off final ......it might have made all the difference
