Institutional racism at its best.
Just go.

Swansea Indepenent Poster Of The Year 2021. Dr P / Mart66 / Roathie / Parlay / E20/ Duffle was 2nd, but he is deluded and thinks in his little twisted brain that he won. Poor sod. We let him win this year, as he has cried for a whole year. His 14 usernames, bless his cotton socks.

What difference does it it make . Just showing that a train driver was not a highly paid well above average wage earner.

Just to help you out the inflation rate betwe1953 and 1963 was around 20% so you can add to 20% to the figures as the railway industry was in steep decline, was loss making and train drivers were unlikely to be increasing more than average wages

I notice you have not provided ANY EVIDENCE TO BACK YOU CLAIM AS PER USUAL.

If you can't prove your point why posts lies.

Nobody said it was ‘highly paid well above tbe average earner’.

Your figures were a decade out.
Next time i wont bother pointing it out.
We are just trying to make you a better poster, not well above average ….. just better.

Your actual words

"Train driver was a good job", in reply to someone saying his father was a train driver in 1963.

You were wrong it was a filthy dirty job paying less than average wages.

Now it is a good job with intercity train drivers earning £50,000 to £60,000 a year and London underground drivers earning over £100,000 despite the fact that on 50% of the underground lines the trains are automatic and all the driver does is open the doors. No wonder fares are so expensive.

You be made a good point in relation to conditions of service, and you’re right that intercity train drivers are on £50,000 to £60,000 - some are on more. The TFW drivers are on less, but their still on good money.
The average wage for a tube driver was £55k in 2018, nowhere near the “over £100k,000” you are referring to - check it. There are over 4,000 tube drivers and in 2018, only 9 received over £100,000 and they were highly skilled instructors etc. I think £55,000 is good cash and it’s less but the conditions aren’t great - no daylight on some lines, suicides

Yes my actual words were different to those you quoted.

It was still a good job compared to many others in swansea at the time.
Swansea was not the City of London.

I suppose now would be an opportune moment to admit a mistake on my part. Upon querying the family history I discovered that my Grandfather actually died several years prior to 1963, so how good a job or how well it was paid at the time is completely irrelevant.

What isn't irrelevant however is the fact that the Grammar school system offered a private school level education to the son of a very lower working class widowed dinner lady.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

I am glad to be able to inform you that State Comprehensive schools can offer that very same level of opportunity. But to more of our young people.

State comprehensive offer a low standard of education to everyone. The class can only learn at the speed of slowest pupils. It is bit like abolishing the PL and EPL and spreading all the players amongst the non league clubs. Result a lower standard of football.

You need to stretch pupils to the best of their abilities with the brightest all grouped together.

Not true. There are occasions where there will be a slightly bettereducation received in a grammar than in a comprehensive.

However, for every one disadvantaged child getting into grammar, 19 will receive a demonstrably poorer education in a secondary modern (and you can't just say make the secondary moderns better - they've had the top 20% of pupils taken away from them).

It is also likely that the 19 figure is higher where a grammar school insist on high cost uniform which puts families off from applying.

Good teachers can adapt to the needs of the class, but good teachers are a dying breed. There is no doubt State schools are under financial pressure, their budgets are stretched and new, inexperienced teachers are much cheaper to hire, however they may not be as good as the old ones they replace.

FWIW, I think we need to take another look at education and schools to try and improve things.

I agree with all that with the exeception of good teachers being a dying breed - many if them are just leaving.

I completely agree that school reform is desperate and there's one key question that has to be started with - What are schools for?

If people think they should be for education, they've no idea what the current role is.

And it also alienated many lower working class kids who didnt fit into the system.Grammar schools were run on minor English Public Schools lines.
I have siblings who went to both and both did well and achieved the same results.

Dont be a div.

The comps can work on streams ….so the more capable students for that subject are indeed grouped.
Big comps can run 4 streams in a single school year.

But being the one school is the right ethos.
Something for everybody.

Its certaonly not as simple as Grammar good and Comp bad.

I would never support a return to Grammar schools.
Wales closed the last one in the 1980s. Good.

As long as you are happy with a mediocre system.

What is your opinion on Drakeford's proposal to introduce tolls through the Brynglas tunnels?

I was always told Grammar were better schools ,as regards results anyway and it's true enough BUT the old Grammars were often horrendous bastions of old style class division which for me saw boys from the "poorer" parts of Swansea being pitched with those, like me,from "better" ones.
Being an individually minded kid I railed againt the whole system and got out asap after O levels.
I remember the teacher in old Bishop Gore ritually humiliating some kids and it was encouraged by both staff and pupils so ,sorry, whatever superior education supplied was mitigated by just that.

I ve done well enough in life and it has naff all to do with my alma mater

Good Comps are much fairer all round

The school I went to the pupils were graded A to F, those graded ABC were given a grammar school type education while those in DE and F were left to wither on the vine. In fact one of the teachers teaching maths in the lower grades used to constantly run around the class hitting pupils around the head.
Excellent cricket facilities at the school only available to those in the higher grades, football was completely out of the question across the board.
I was glad to get out of there at 15, done ok and have been fortunate to work for 50 years before retirement.

Depends what measure you use when it comes to results.

If it’s % of pupils achieving the higher grades then of course grammars do well - they have the brightest pupils to start with (mind you, some children will be there after their parents have spent a fortune on tutoring - yet another reason why they are a social mobility blocker).

If you look at the progress children make from start to finish, Comprehensive schools do at least as well on average and in many cases better.
