Institutional racism at its best.
Just go.

Swansea Indepenent Poster Of The Year 2021. Dr P / Mart66 / Roathie / Parlay / E20/ Duffle was 2nd, but he is deluded and thinks in his little twisted brain that he won. Poor sod. We let him win this year, as he has cried for a whole year. His 14 usernames, bless his cotton socks.

Agree completely with you on private school.

Disagree completely with you on grammars. IMO grammar schools are far more divisive and demonstrably reduce social mobility. I’d shut them all.

They’re kept alive by rare success stories where somebody’s working class uncle passed the 11 plus and now is a FTSE CEO.

My dad was the son of a train driver and school dinner lady. Thanks to passing his eleven plus he got a grammar education alongside the sons of solicitors and doctors.

Nothing aided social mobility more.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Yep.

The campaign against private education is based on nothing but envy. Of course, working class children had access to education approaching private levels too via the Grammar system, but the same interests campaigned against them as well.

Nobody is allowed to be better in their eyes. Mediocrity for all.

Sad but true, the Grammar school system gave talented children from poor backgrounds a good way to build on their talent.

I’m not for one minute saying that there aren’t success stories but to some degree these are part of the problem. The evidence is really strong in this topic.

Children who are doing well enough to get into a grammar would in all likelihood continue to do well in the comprehensive system. All the academic data shows that those bright children achieve only ‘slightly’ better standards than their comprehensive system peers.

But here’s the kicker. Grammar areas tend to have secondary moderns. Those schools do significantly worse than their comprehensive counterparts after having the brightest children whipped away from them

In grammar areas children have a 20% chance of getting in.

Imagine you’re a parent of 5 children. Would you want to take the risk of one of your children getting a slightly better education while the other four get a poorer one?

It’s worse when it gets to low income families where the figure drops to 1 in 20. That’s why I think it’s damaging to social mobility.

Grammar schools were working, secondary moderns were struggling in some cases, so the thinking was to pull the thing that worked rather than improve the thing that wasn't.

Exactly right.

And there is the arguement that says if the parents of little Rees-Mogg were forced to be parents at the local comp then the local comp might benefit from their interest, influence, and wealth.

However my main reason for wanting to burn the public schools to the ground, is based on the monsters they create. Monsters that then lead the rest of us over a cliff without a care in the world.

The problem is that the school system is geared entirely towards academic achievement. With the best will in the World, there are plenty of kids out there who have no academic bent. Plenty of intelligence and capability, but no aptitude whatsoever towards exams and grades.

One of the biggest failings of the Blair Govt (alongside the Iraq war and Gordon Brown's raiding of pension funds which will impoverish future generations) is the absurd notion of 50% of school leavers going to University.

Why? Does the UK Labour market need 50% of potential employees to have a degree? Of course not. That's why we have shortages in certain areas now.

The Labour ambition (it was never a hard target) certainly started the ball rolling but hasn’t been the biggest driver - that’s been tuition fees.

It’s no coincidence that since University’s have been monetised, places like Swansea have seen student accommodation numbers rise, it’s big business now.

You want to do a degree in tiddlywinks? If enough are willing to pay 9k a year some Uni will sort you out.

That's a fair point.

I've not got a major issue with tuition fees. If graduates expect to earn a greater salary throughout their careers then asking them to contribute a bit towards their degree isn't a stretch IMO. But, as you say, there are Universities who see it as a cash cow.

I'd have no problem with the Govt offering subsidies towards "useful" degrees such as those in science, engineering or medicine tho.

Again, just for clarity, children who are bright enough to attend a grammar school would do just as well and in some cases marginally better than then same standard kids in the comprehensive system.

The argument about what academic goals should/could be is a completely different one.

Think you will find more monsters are created in inner city bog standard comprehensive schools you only have to look at knife crimes and murder numbers in London.

Private schools tend to produce well educated, well rounded individuals who go onto universities, get well paid jobs, pay their taxes, are open minded , innovative and produce wealth that is shared throughout the country.

Of course bigots will deny this.

Ok, I stand corrected buddy.

Additionally you make some good points on this thread but Grammar schools, much like the modern day Academies, take money from the system that would be better spent on improving the comprehensives.

I agree 100%. Kids who are academically good should be encouraged along that path. Kids who aren't good academicallly should have extra lessons in basic education, maths, English, but instead of doing 6/7/8 GCE's or hatever the new exams are called, start training them in skills, give them apprenticeships in schools so 2 years later they are halfwat to a trade and a lifelong job opportunity.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

1953 average wage for men in UK was £12

1953 average wage for engine driver £11 to £13
1953 average wage for railway fireman £8 to £10

They were just about paid UK average for a dirty job that included very unsocial hours

Back when I was in school, loads of kids ended up doing GCSE's in stuff like Art, Drama and RE just because it was somewhere to put them and they had to do a certain number of subjects. A total waste of time and effort for all involved, and also disruptive to those kids who genuinely wanted to do Art, Drama and RE.

There should have been alternatives.

I disagree, private school turns out a different kind of monster is all. It turns out people like Bojo, the better educated class of monster.
State school turns out petty criminals but private schools turn out people who screw over the entire country.

What difference does it it make . Just showing that a train driver was not a highly paid well above average wage earner.

Just to help you out the inflation rate betwe1953 and 1963 was around 20% so you can add to 20% to the figures as the railway industry was in steep decline, was loss making and train drivers were unlikely to be increasing more than average wages
