Over 44% now get A or A* grades compared to only 25%. 2 years ago. So with them missing most of the last 18 months education the results are massively better. It makes you think why the “teachers “ are employed when the kids are doing so much better with far less teaching😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Anyway at least we know that we have the most intelligent kids in the world now.

| Exam results at record highs on 12:21 - Aug 11 by Gwyn737 | I see the same thing around expectations, Prof. I think most of it stems from the fact that levels of school accountability in England are far higher than Wales and have been for some time. |
I can't fault either my two went/go to Gwyn. My son has marked SEN which the Grammar he goes to picked up in weeks after the primary missed him (high achievement, good behaviour). The communication with the school is superb, not just for us but for all-weekly newsletter, email from head and from head of year for all. Clear expectations of students and parental involvement in learning. Light years from my experience in school. The support my son has had has been excellent, with bespoke learning packages as he felt it impossible to access online teaching. Standards are variable around here, as anywhere, but as you say the accountability is clear.

My boy is about to start secondary school. As your experience, the expectations of the school have been clear throughout the transition. In fact, some things are a bit too formal for me but no one can say we haven’t been told. I know what I’ve signed up to so will be supportive of it.

Our son started Comp last September, Dwr y Felin in Neath. They have an app (SIMS parent) which they message me on, it tells me when he has homework and whether he handed it in, I get his reports on it. It shows the timetable AND it has a conduct section, I know when he's done good or when he's been naughty (so far it's 52 good marks and 4 bad but being bad includes forgetting his books or looking at his phone, he's done both twice) I know what's going on most of the time. I think some of their rules are a bit strict but like you I support it.

It's good to hear that communication there has improved, because when my kids were there it was very poor, but we didn't have apps then. Do you get updates on his actual progress and not just whether he's complying with their rules?

The regular end of term reports, there's monthly newsletters. The conduct app gives bonus points for good contributions in class too. If he's not doing very well the teacher has contacted me. He's struggling a bit in Maths but he hates the teacher. He's doing very well in History and gets lots of bonus points there. I can't judge communication against previous years, I have nothing to gauge it against. A friend has a son who left the school last year and a daughter in year 11 and he has always said it's a good school since they started there.

I'm glad he's doing well. It was poor when my kids were there. I found in junior school, when my eldest was there 20 years ago, we used to get regular meetings with staff. 7 years later with my youngest we used to get one a year at the end of the year.Communication definitely deteriorated

| Exam results at record highs on 10:19 - Aug 11 by Catullus | The changes in the school had to be post 2010, my son is only 12! It was late in year 4 when the head changed. Part way through year 6 we moved him. Those predictors you mention, our income is aound 35k and as it goes our son was born in September. We had his end of year report from the school and we were very pleased. His results are getting back to where they were. We spoke with teachers on Zoom and some of the comments were heart warming. There will always be exceptions to the rule. |
Kids born in September will generally be higher achievers in the first few years of school, simply because they are nearly a year older than a lot of their classmates. It will balance out. As for exams, they’re memory tests and have very little to do with competence or ability, but schools can’t claim success based on anything else, and certainly not future achievement. As for record numbers of A*’s, it’s like inflation init, literally means nothing if everyone has got one so it seems like the backslapping should stop and the whole time bing should be recalibrated.

They had to bring in A* as there were huge numbers getting A which did not help the Universities to select candidates. Today's GCSE results expected to be at a record level.
