How about Borini? His loan played a huge part in adding £100m+ to the club’s turnover, which they were then able to repeat 6 times.

We could have said nah, he’s Chelseas player, he won’t benefit us financially.

If we’re looking to challenge for promotion, we need the best squad we can get within our means. If we’re looking at this as a consolation season where we’re embedding Martins football and are happy to finish middle of the pack, then yes, we are better off developing our own squad.

Had we bought 3 strikers that season?

A January (actually it was mid-March wow) reinforcement a decade ago doesn't do much to convince me. If we're making a push towards the top of the table and need improvement up top for the second half of the season absolutely bring in a trendy loan player to help us along (as Hourihane was supposed to be). Right now we're being told it's a project to implement Martin's style so why a short-term player in a position we have numbers?

If we were bringing in a proven EFL goalscorer then that would be great and helpful to us. Couldn't care less if he's a loan player. But I can't see this happening personally. So I'm not even sure another forward is required unless better than what we have. Piroe and Lowe with Cullen, Whittaker, Joseph as back up should work well from the little evidence we have but much depends on the service because last year it was poor and Lowe and Ayew fed off scraps most of the time but did a bloody good job despite that.

Downes, Walsh and Paterson all seem to be able to add plenty of creativity.

I'd give piroe the #9 if it was me, but it really seems as if theres another striker coming IMO

I suppose that anyone coming in may depend upon whether Lowe goes. If Anderlecht offered £3m or thereabouts I imagine the Yanks would take it and then bring someone in. Not saying I'd want this but I can't see any striker coming in without one of our current mob going.
Only other possibility is Grimes goes and we loan/buy another striker instead.

We’d bought Scott Sinclair for what was enormous money to us at the time.

If we’re going to look at it with hindsight (as with Hourihane) we’ve spent a million pound over two years on a player we developed for Sheffield Wednesday.

I agree, if it’s all about the playing style and we aren’t worried where we finish, there’s no point in a loan. The signings so far, bearing in mind we normally bring millions in through player sales, don’t really indicate that.

Why do you think Lowe changed to #10 and Piroe was told he couldn't have the #9 if nother striker isn't planned?

We have a large sell-on % for Byers. Hopefully he does well there and we benefit in the future.

No idea mate. I don't take much notice of that sort of nonsense. But perhaps there's something in it.

Yeah fingers crossed. Plus we’ve saved the half million we would have paid him this season.

Either way, I don’t think a striker on loan is going to ruin us, as long as Martin thinks he improves us and the board are happy it’s affordable.

Oh yeah I have zero doubt about it he had valid reason.

Breath of fresh air so far Martin has. Tough season ahead, we will take some hammerings along the way but he can build something here I’m sure.

.

Martin is clearly bringing in a proper #9.

A proper #9 is long overdue. We could OF been in the Prem had we had a proper #9 last term.

For some twpsin though, Martin is now a breath of fresh air. Whereas previously he was persona non grata, and Morris Should OF got the gig.

Duw Duw (not Dew dew, thick as mince).

Ike Ugbo. This guy might be available. 22 years 1 in 2 in Netherlands and Belgium in the last two seasons. Taken to Belgium by Paul Clement.

Not sure the Chelsea links are still valid after Cooperball ended. Please show Cooper respect. Not too happy at name calling seen on this forum recently. He did a very solid job.

Plenty of links with Chelsea at academy level. It didn't all go with Steve Cooper.

Rotational play and synchronised movement amongst the frontline is a big part of Martin’s system, and he likes his forwards to be adaptable, versatile, mobile and hard-working. Fluidity is a key component of how he likes to position his attackers, and there is a lot of freedom afforded to them when progressing the ball down the pitch and, especially, in the final third. There is a structure that Martin likes them to adhere to, but a certain level of individual liberty is given in the right situations.

In the middle third of the pitch, Martin likes his wing-backs to hug the touchline, providing the width as the ball is worked through central areas. After moving it around side to side, looking to force the opposition midfield to overcommit and pull the backline out of position, he charges his playmaker with swiftly identifying the open man and springing the attacking motion at pace. Positional overloads and numerical superiority are key to the build-up play, which requires his attackers and midfield to be in constant motion and knowing which zone to be in on the pitch at the right time.

There is no room for passengers, and he expects his central striker to be able to play off the shoulder, as well as drop deep and hold the ball up. When a player moves and vacates his position, another is expected to come and fill the space. This occurs all over the pitch but is most pronounced with his attackers. This fluid motion requires them to be versatile in possession, capable dribblers, shooters and able to pick a pass depending on the position they are in when receiving the ball.

Piröe has it all, and we are beginning to see that and I expect it will continue. Whittaker and Joseph are still a bit raw, but they both have excellent qualities in key facets of attacking play, and can have an impact with us this season if they both stay. Whittaker and Joseph are both shot machines and from dangerous positions too, and good dribblers. Whittaker averages 3.0 shots per 90, with nearly half (1.4) from inside the penalty area, while Joseph takes 2.6 shots with a massive 2.2 coming within the penalty area. Whittaker averages 1.7 dribbles per 90 at a 58% success rate, with Joseph on 1.4 dribbles at a 60% rate. They’ve got skills we can use this season if Lowe moves on.

Oh yea it's not like left the striker the club signed for over a million quid before he took over as manager out of the squad for the first game of the season or anything

Piröe is Dutch, straight from the Eredevisie, which has a completely different style of play league-wide from English football, especially the Championship. Much more time on the ball, much slower pace, far less physical, etc. In general, many players coming out of the Netherlands have struggled initially or altogether never settled and left when faced with the transition. At minimum there’s definitely an acclimation period that needs to be budgeted for when signing players from the country and league.

Speaking specifically about Piröe, he also has not played very much the past couple seasons, which requires adjusting to in a different way, in terms of his fitness and match sharpness. Martin chose players who have been with us for longer and spent their entire careers so far in English football, and were matchfit. They knew what they’re up against, and Martin knew what he was getting with them.

Having also spent his entire career in English football and having less than a week to prepare for his first match, Martin made a clear, pragmatic decision based on the facts of the matter. Throwing Piröe into the fire would not help anyone, most of all the player. Another aspect of this is these are professional athletes who are extremely competitive. This kind of thing should motivate the best players to perform, and based on Piröe’s performances against Reading, Stoke and Bristol, it certainly has.

Martin spoke to Piröe about his decision to leave him out a couple days before the Blackburn game, explaining his reasoning and clearing the air in order to prevent any miscommunication or hurt feelings. This is his management style, he was the same at MK Dons, and he has gone on record saying he learned this from Farke, who he respected for speaking to him clearly and directly even when he disagreed with the decisions.

A manager has to make tough calls. Sometimes they are right, sometimes they are wrong, but they need the cojones to do it. Martin has taken the bedding-in route with Piröe, and it has absolutely been the right call for the player, and I believe long-term the right one for the club, as well. The results are beginning to show that, and it will get better with more time on the training ground and the video room. Vindication for Martin, Chief?
