| Raducanu on 13:01 - Sep 14 by Dr_Parnassus | The ATP/WTA doesn't give out wildcards, my word. They are the choice of the tournament organisers, hence why most wildcards either go to big names to attract sponsors and sell tickets, or local talent and drum up local interest. Come on now. |
It is the governing bodies that authorise wild cards the tournament organisers don't have the power to put in any Tom, Dick or Harry it has to be sanctioned by the authorities that run the game, players with a certain ranking or previous Grand Slam champions are some of the first inline to gain a wildcard if they want it per the sanctioning authorities rules.

| Raducanu on 14:25 - Sep 14 by Dr_Parnassus | You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, yet again. It is up to the event holder/organiser to determine who they offer wild cards to. The WTA/ATP have absolutely no say and there is no pecking order or line. When I went to Valencia tournament a while back they decided to give it to a local player who belonged to the tennis club. It’s the very reason Raducanu got a wildcard into Wimbledon but didn’t in the US Open. 7 of the 8 women’s wildcards for the US Open were Americans. It’s organiser specified, not governing body specified. I should be shocked you didn’t know such a basic thing, but I’m not. [Post edited 14 Sep 2021 14:28]

In fairness that's pretty common knowledge. That's why there are so many British players at Wimbledon-they are not there on ranking.

Wild cards are not official unless approved by the WTA as per their rules.

In the case of Murray, he is still a big draw as Grand Slam and Olympic winner. Good box office as is a fighter. If I wanted to sell tickets I would give Murray a wildcard.

Yep, all tournaments largely pick their own players for wildcards. If it’s a smaller tournament that needs to raise its profile it will try and get a big player who is returning from injury. That happens at Main Tour/Challenger/ITF levels.

They will often give an old champion, a top player coming back from injury a wildcard spot, most often wildcard spots are given to promising younger players particularly from the home country but all these players need to be authorised and not just the tournament directors granny or grandson.

Nope, none. It’s akin to you saying “I hope the FA picks a good team for us in our next match”… then when someone tells you they have no say in who we pick… you state “they would not allow us to play an ineligible player so they get final say”.

| Raducanu on 18:45 - Sep 14 by Whiterockin | So they check that the wild card meets all the rules and regulations, then give them the OK? |
It’s a check box exercise to ensure that who the organisers pick comply with the rules of tennis. A bit like giving the team sheet to the ref before the game to ensure all players are eligible to play. Every sub that comes on to the pitch has to have the all clear from the 4th official that his studs are legal. Anyone who suggests the ref and 4th official has a say in who gets picked though is utterly barmy. …Or covering up a massive clanger. You can decide which. [Post edited 14 Sep 2021 23:36]

It’s zero climb down. They have no say. To the point where it is actually a massive issue in tennis. We have tournament directors giving wildcards to daughters etc You are wrong Tramps. Just suck this one up.

And they would be allowed to of course, I don’t believe he has been banned by the integrity unit and certainly don’t think he is underage. Gail Falkenberg gains entry into a lot of the ITF tournaments in America, she has a lot of contacts in with tournament directors. She’s into her 70’s. She played Taylor Townsend in one tournament (Pelham maybe?) and won around 10 points. It was embarrassing.
