I'm curious who everyone thinks Mike Tyson's greatest victory was against.
Blown-up light heavyweight Mike Spinks? Old, inactive and come-backing Larry Holmes? Heroin addict Pinklon Thomas? Clumsy and awkward Trevor Berbick? Lard-ass Tony Tubbs? A green Tyrell Biggs? Frank Bruno?
Mike Tyson looked sensational cutting a swathe through one of the poorest generation of heavyweights in boxing history. Let's have a bit of perspective here.

Seriously, what is Mike Tyson's stand-out victory that makes him such an overwhelming favourite against Fury? Which of his victories is comparable to Fury's in Klitschko back yard? When did he ever come back from adversity to win a bout like Fury has done multiple times? Every time Mike touched the canvas, he lost and usually by KO.

Apparently every generation of heavyweight boxers is a poor one, except Ali’s.

A great believer in taking anything you like to wherever you want to.

Size meant nothing in that fight because the rules allowed Dempsey to stand over Willard and smash him in the face in the act of rising. So if you went down first in a round, you were in big trouble until the bell sounded.
Dempsey avoided the top two contenders for the entire duration of his heavyweight title reign, one of whom was a middleweight. Ducking dangerous opponents is not a modern phenomenon.

I get your general point but Dempsey isn't a good example. His legend contains a lot of smoke and mirrors.

Dempsey was smashing men for a few dollars when he was a young teen to put food on the table for a family of13.
Although losing both Tunney fights, his popularity never waned, the opposite.
He didn’t dodge anyone or anything and to suggest he did flies in the face of history.

We were talking about putative fights under rules of the day and if Fury had entered the ring,Dempsey would have been all over him so forgive my disagreeing.

His legend is part of NYC to this day so smoke and mirrors hardly.

He is a perfect example of a real Champion which Fury will never be as he doesn’t have the grace .

What about Max Baer and another huge opponent smashed to pieces

I think you need to acquaint yourself with Harry Wills and Harry Greb, who chased down Dempsey for his entire reign, if you believe he didn't dodge anyone.

Dempsey defended the title against six men, four of whom had been previously beaten by Greb, a middleweight.
Personally, I believe Dempsey would have beaten Greb but it's a disgrace that he avoided him.
At least he had the colour bar to hide behind regarding Wills.

I'm surprised you appear to be unaware of either of these men.

I’m surprised you think I’m surprised .
Do you not understand the reluctance of promoters to fix fights with black boxers . Willis might have beaten Manasseh Jack but we don’t know ,including you Sir.
Read what Tunney said of him

As late as 1962,he was rated as Number 1 of all time by Ring . Bert Sugarcwas no mug blinded by smoke and mirrors.

Dempsey fought what was out in front of Him. Ali,Louis Marciano were always headline events .
Anyway, a good exchange and thanks for that

Anyway, Fury the greatest of all time ?

No, I don't think Fury is the greatest of all time. That remains Ali or Louis for me, in whichever order but he would be a handful for anyone.
But whatever the reason, Dempsey did not fight the top two contenders of his title reign. I'm not talking about his path to the title and all the romanticism of riding the rail-rods but who he fought as champion.

If you can generate million dollar gates for defending against a former European welterweight champion (Carpentier), why bother with the guys who may de-throne you. It's what we see to this day.

I've always loved the Dempsey story, the sixteen biographies of him sitting on my bookshelf attest to that but I'm not blinded to what should have been.

PS
Burt Sugar was a great story teller who didn't let facts get in the way of a good story.

Great stuff Cledd.

We agree to disagree.

That said, I am with you regarding Ali Louis. Don’t think they can be separated although at peak,Ind actually favour the Bomber

A chum of mine actually met JD in the 70 s in his restaurant.

He came over and asked them if they were buying him a drink. He stayed with them for 30 mins. They never forgot him. Character or what.

Maybe,we are all overtaken with sentimentality as regards sporting icons.

Now then, start a thread on the greatest Rugby player of all time.

Louis was 15 stone 2. Standing 6ft 2.
Tyson Fury is 19 stone 11. Standing 6ft 9.

Louis has zero chance.
Fury can box and hit hard.

Mike Tyson was 15 stone 9.
Ali was similar.
Both heroes of mine, but Tyson Fury is up there.

I like Fury he's a great fighter, but could he cope with Usyk's speedy footwork and hand speed, be an interesting fight, Usyk is 6,3 as well so not small.

we need to see the fury/joshua fight now

That's the last thing we need. Joshua has no belts and has been outclassed by smaller men who possess greater skills and ring craft. Now imagine comparable levels of nous attached to a much larger man, in Fury. Fury has handled (admittedly miraculously in the first fight) the most dangerous puncher for 30 rounds. Wilder also has a much stronger chin than Joshua. Anyone who thinks Joshua would survive the distance is deluded. Without the belts, this fight is barely worth getting excited about.

After Usyk picks Joshua apart again, Fury should fight him for all the belts. Joshua has lost his edge and unless he bulks up, presses home his weight and height advantage, and takes the inevitable counters involved in such a tactic (highly doubtful), he's got very little chance. I expect Fury v Whyte in the meantime. Whyte is WBC mandatory I believe, and Fury has mentioned his name as a prospective opponent before.

As for comparisons outside his era, it's a complete waste of time. And I think some people forget how huge Fury is. Tyson was 5'10'' remember, and Fury uses his jab and massive reach very effectively to keep distance But no doubt, his achievements, away from home so often, are the greatest in this era.

People should and can forget about AJ, he's a busted flush now fancies himself more as a celebrity than a fighter, he's more than made his money, I really can't see him coming back and winning another World Title.

Smaller boxers usually employ techniques to engage larger opponents. Marciano used the criss arm defence to get close . He also used a 300 pound heavy punchbag in training sessions.. This enabled him to generate enormous punching power .He trained like a trojan before fights and was as fit in the 12 th round as the first and could absorb enormous punishment . If he got close enough he could knock anyone out and every punch he threw was a potential knockout . No tippy tippy or throw a jab it was crouch Bob and unload and if you got caught you were in trouble. The problem for Marcianio would be getting close enough to land a head shot so he would have to work to Furys mid section .
Dempsey didn't fight Wills because they didn't want a potential repeat of the race riots that occurred when Johson beat the last white hope . There were lynching and murders across the States as a result of that fight . Dempsey never looked particularly good when fighting smaller men funnily enough .Tunney was a smaller man who bulked up by cutting trees down but was master of defence .when Dempsey fought him Dempsey was a bit stale as he had had 3 years off doing nothing but the odd exhibition fight and swanning round Hollywood with Estelle Taylor. Grebb was a one off who
Tore up the rule book the martini man fight anywhere anytime . A guy who was the only person to knock 7 bells out of Tunney .Dempseys management were wise to keep Greb away as he would only make Dempsey look bad (he wasn't known as the human windmill for nothing )
If you want to see Dempsey in his prime watch the Firpo fight 1923 . Firpo was the bigger man 6 feet 3 and heavier with hands like shovels but Dempsey knocked him out in a couple of rounds but it wasn't one sided. Dempsey v Fury again Dempsey would have to close the range .He was a good technician and used a very powerful uppercut close in even as he was stepping out of clinches. He had a ko punch in both hands and fought out of a crouch 78 inch reach I think but if he connects Fury is in trouble .Dempsey also had a killer instinct belied by a high pitched voice .Fury would have to keep him away at all costs . Dempsey is not the type who expends energy in clinches he prefers ro step away reset and attack from a different angle.
Demsy in his prime would have given Fury problems whether he beats him is a moot point and almost impossible to predict.

A quite outstanding read and the best Ive read on any site anywhere.
I take my hat off to you Sir.

JD is/was and will be seen a the first superstar champion a figure who nearly all liked .He remained an icon all his life.

He was a swarming fighter like Frazier and Marciano who I believe would also have hammered Fury and knocked him out. Fury has been knocked down pretty often so it's down to just where he is hit. Nobody ever got out of it after Marciano knocked them down.

It's a decent debate though and of course all contention.Nowt wrong with that.

Was it, but surely the likes of Lewis, Holmes, a prime Tyson etc were levels above today's lot, an ageing Lewis even stopped the better Klitscho brother in six rounds the same Klitscho who then became champion for a number of years, against i may add very poor opposition due to a lack of quality opponents, we saw how Bruno was easily defeated when he fought these guys and the jury is out as to who is the better fighter between him and Joshua seeing as both are robotic and heavily muscled fighters, Fury may have been a little awkward due to his size but these guys would still have been to much for him.

And to those who believe the 13 and 14 st champions of the past could beat the 17 or 18 st champions from the different era`s have to have a bias mindset probably installed into them by there granddads and fathers when they were children, i can only imagine what the likes of Foreman, Holmes, and Lewis etc would have done to lets say Marciano, it would have been a one sided and painful beat down, even Fury would have easily taken care of him.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.
