Love and Hate 23:13 - Jan 2 with 1260 viewsonehunglow

Very Fine line.

Worth discussing as it seems apt this evening?

Anyone got the guts to append what defines both.

I know what you mean.
My elder brother has always been a ci4nt to me, ever since my dad died when we were kids. In family terms I should love him. He had a bad illness and I was reallt worried about him. As soon as he was better he went back to being a c4nt. Love and hate merge together at that point for me.

Love is so much more more powerful. Hate can be controlled, love can’t. You can chose who you hate, can’t help who you love.

Fireboy started me thinking last night with the hating Swansea/Wales stuff again .

Can

1.Hate turn to Love
2.Love to Hate
3.Can something or someone be subject to both.

I believe they can

If you love something, you can hate what happens to it ,as you love it.

I don't agree with Jonatlot but he's obviously very articulate.

Good discussion though

Hate is a very strong word. Most on here ‘don’t like’ Cardiff eg, but I doubt anyone ‘hates’ them. It’s a game of football but for an accident of birth, 25 m or so in another direction, the same people would ‘hate’ Swansea.

1. True ‘hate’ such as that of an oppressor or say Hitler in the war. That can only ever be hate, could never turn to true love. There’s Stockholm syndrome with kidnappers but thats not love.
2 Love to hate ? Again I don’t think so. If someone breaks your heart when you love them, I don’t think thats hate, more a healing process similar to a bereavement.
Can sport really be used in that context ? I love animals, I’ve jumped in a lake to save a strangers dog when the idiot owners were just standing there watching it get weaker ( was the middle of summer and the water was warm, so wasn’t that cool) I couldn’t risk the dog drowning. When Swansea lose, does it really wreck my day ? Not really, obviously want them to win, but it’s a game.

So when you say ‘can you hate what happens to it, in what context ?

Great discussion, far nicer than Brexit or ‘Alpha Men Assemble : ) ‘

I have never had hate turn to love, it has turned to apathy. I have had love turn to hate though.

I have also experienced loving someone even though I intensely dislike them for what they have done. Actually, that feeling is still there for 2 family members who I no longer speak to.

Love and hate can be very strange and conflicting emotions.

Loving a place or an area is entirely different. I love the place I grew up in but that place no longer exists except in my memories. I don't hate the place as it is now though.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Great point. We love Scotland, love how barren it is, the beauty in the Lochs, the accents of the locals. Similar near me, Lyme Park, and the Peak Districts, far better than any city centre.

I have never been to Scotland, odd really because I've been to Russia and the USA but never even visited Northern Ireland or Scotland. I had said to my wife during the first lockdown that if we still weren't allowed to fly (and she still doesn't want to, yet) that we could hire a camper van and head North. Maybe in the next Summer holidays, then we can take Albie with us too.

My point is, I have come to love nature and the great outdoors. I don't like cities, any bigger town or city really because they just seem so cold and unfriendly; London first had me thinking like that and the feeling has grown with every large place I've been to, Miami and Moscow, London and Leeds but out in the country people seem friendlier, warmer, have more time for you.
So I hate the cities but love the countryside!

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Best debate for ages .
This is what makes OHL pre eminent.

Trolls will not me and Jon allot disagree but keep it tidy. No old agenda. See.

I love my home town but hate what it’s become . That comment led to hate speech from many posters . Some ignore ,some carry on insults albeit more subtlety

I hate criminals and always will. Hate is absolutely the correct word.

I have loved several people but the love died and hate took over in some cases .it’s a common tale.

My fathers sisters hated him and turned up at his funeral to carry on the spat with me ,as his eldest. They lost at the wake .

I love where I live and hate people who denounce all denizens of our country as pure scum. These are Swansea fans by the way, loyal fans who go to every home game.

See.

Completely agree. This is the type of thread we should be using, I’d love for that to happen, but it’s very unlikely.

Hating criminals is understandable, house burglars eg, but isn’t it better to hate the fact that some (not all) fall into that way of life through poverty, sexual abuse, etc ? If you haven't yet, have a look at John McAvoy’s book. Does show how someone who grew up in a crime family did change when he befriended a prions on officer.

There’s precious few people I hate. Those who decry people simply due to where they’re born, who, they love or worship. My wife always says I’m too nice and people take advantage as I try to see the best of folk, but life’s too short to hold grudges. It just makes you feel bad. Those who deserve hate, and worthy of any feelings from you. Let them live their horrible lives and get on and enjoy yours,

…mind you her pet name for me is ‘knobhead’ so who knows ?

My NY’s resolution is not to get involved in some of the other threads on here, I’ll stick to one’s like this, far better for mental health and just nicer.

I don't carry the hate with me, it just surfaces should I happen to see the person. We moved home and started again to get away from hate and so far it been a 100% success!

The only NY resolution I have ever stuck to was not to make any more!

My wife doesn't have a pet name for me but I do know (because she showed me the messages) that her work colleagues think I'm blooming wonderful

Jon
It is often said to ignore insulting posters.
I believe one has to confront and expose . It’s not pleasant but you have to stand up to hate

Ignoring them does not work for me as like slugs they hang around at your feet

Remember this isn’t real life, it’s a forum with people hiding behind keyboards. Any confrontation adds to the fire. I’ve tried. Unlike you or I, who acknowledge each others decent points, it doesn’t work on here.

I agree re standing up to racism and the like but as far as covid, Brexit is concerned. It’s been done and done and done. All it does on here is cause upset to both sides.

Not sure about that as people use these forums to enhance an otherwise boring existence or simply to make friends
I’m lucky in that being not a particularly nice person it doesn’t really sit well with me.
Having strangers fawning all over me because I post nice things, perceived as being positive .

Nothing the matter with negativity if it is managed as is the same with pessimism which is an advantage more often than not.

Can we turn the other cheek and forgive. Can we learn to love someone we hated. I prefer not to as it’s superficial and false .

Be yourself.Always

The few people that I actually hate, I can never forgive. I can put them behind me but forgiveness is beyond me.

I don't agree that pessimism is an advantage, if you always expect the worse it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. During my health worries, if I hadn't stayed positive I don't think I'd still be here. It got to me at times but I bounced back.

Negativity is like positivity, OK when it's deserved. Fair criticism is always OK.
