| Post match thoughts 22:00 - Feb 28 with 3873 views | Dr_Parnassus | As usual I’ll be among the first to congratulate Martin and the players on a good win. I’ll put it in a separate thread as no doubt a select few will pretend they haven’t seen it and criticise as a result. I would have taken a draw before the match so to come away with 3 points is not something we can’t look too critically at, I am results driven in my analysis so I’ll keep taking the 3 points quite happily without much too concern elsewhere if that can become the norm. WBA were horrendous, they have now scored 1 goal in the last 7 games, it was clear why that was the case. I’d say we grew into the game, the first half was very dull, same slow and meaningless passing being noted by many, including the SKY commentators who said there is far too much focus on possession stats. I wasn’t keen on the lineup with no Ntcham and Wolf and Christie swapping sides. This was all corrected in game, but should have been right from the start in my view. I don’t like unsettling the team for no apparent reason. The positives is despite Martin adopting the wrong tactics and selection from the start he was able to recognise that and adjust. In the last 15 minutes we put on Ntcham, had the wingbacks on the correct flanks and started to go more direct, exposing gaping holes in the WBA wide defensive areas which was commented on early on the match day thread. Our first goal saw 2 passes from our own 18 yard box to scoring the goal, the second goal saw 3 passes from our own defensive third to scoring the goal. There is a lot to learn there for Martin, if he is willing to see it. Positive results, positive affirmation of the way we should be playing - will it be capitalised on? Time will tell. That’s where I am today. [Post edited 28 Feb 2022 23:20]

WBA had 1 shot on target didn't they? He clearly didn't have the selection spot on, that's why he had to correct it mid game. But he did correct it, which is the main thing.

He did yes, but he didn't have anything to do so it's a bit silly to give him credit for it. If you stood between the sticks and had no shots to save, you would have kept a clean sheet too. I don't even remember their shot on target. Do you?

Grimes and Naughton had very good games, that’s the Grimes who somebody on here described as a coward, with the same person criticising Naughton saying that Carroll would run all over him.

Indeed both had good games, although Carroll wasn't marked by Naughton. Thankfully he put Cabango in the middle this time, last time he put Naughton up against powerhouse instead of a physical CB it was a disaster. Mitrovic wasn't it?

Carroll didn’t really have much service but when he did Cabango, in the main, took care,of him in a similar way to Ashley Williams … make life awkward. Chances are Carroll would win a heading contest so just make sure that if he did het the ball he could achieve little with it. The passing and possession game paid off (no 5 - 1 drubbing this time and a clean sheet),

Agree regarding Cabango. Disagree regarding the passing and possession game winning us the match. Changing to the direct game is what paid off. 2 passes for our first goal, 3 for our second. Both coming from the space that was highlighted that we should be taking advantage of in the first half. We could have won that game 6-0, no joke.

You should be in the throes of misery The win last night derailed your "Martin Out" campaign, at least for a little while. Hypocrite

"Fisher had a clean sheet,", more by luck than good keeping though. Take of the rose tinted glasses.

Where the passing & possession did pay off was after we scored the 2 goals. It prevented them getting too many opportunities to get quick goals.

And there was me thinking that we had the ball and passed it when we scored the 2 goals. So ultimately having the ball and passing it also payed off with the goals.

We are talking about styles. Every style passes the ball, even a Pulis side. What changed the game was us adopting a direct passing style, 2 or 3 passes to go 80 yards.

Where the passing and possession paid off was after we scored 2 goals 😂 I really can't believe that someone is that blinkered or actually dull enough to not only think that but type it. What happened, did WBA score 2 own goals or did the wind blow the ball in!?! I think that post is the dullest post I have ever read in 20 odd years.... DrP has come out with some classics but that post is on another level 😬

Not quite sure what you are talking about here squire. What he said was a passing and possession style isn’t what changed the game, it hindered us for most parts. We took the lead by ditching it and going direct no more than 3 passes in either of our goals to go the length of the pitch. We then utilised the possession game when in front to stay in front. It really wasn’t a difficult concept to understand.

In that 11.46 post he mentioned passing and possession...........the word style was not typed. Highlight to me the word style in that post? The post I responded too.

He quoted me, you have to learn the context of the discussion. I said “passing and possession game”. He took that on and said the only time it was useful was when we were in front and keeping the lead. Because the real useful tactic was the direct game, it got us both our goals. We both know you didn’t really think he was suggesting we didn’t have the ball or pass it to another player in order to score, you are just being silly again. Happy to help. You are wasting your time as he obviously thinks that all passing is the same throughout the whole game with the same purpose. There is no helping him. [Post edited 1 Mar 2022 16:11]
