"I don't disagree with what we have done to Ukraine financially and with weapons is excellent but the aid for refugees is very poor"

Some 37,000 asylum seekers and Afghan refugees are living in UK hotels at a cost of £4.7m per day, I wouldn't call £4.7m a day a poor effort IMO, go compare it to other countries.

I have to disagree Flash, I'm afraid. I know people who have applied to be allowed to house Ukraine refugees and although they were accepted weeks previously, nothing has happened. The difficulties, people are facing in obtaining visas are very high, these people are fleeing for their lives, and are finding it almost impossible to get here.

Can you honestly listen to Priti Patel and say that she is a lady who will want to welcome Ukrainian refuges ?

Do appreciate your views, and thanks for a proper dabate

And I know a couple that applied to home one Ukrainian woman and her child, then the woman decided she couldn't leave her two younger sisters, so the couple reapplied for visas for all four Ukrainians, they arrived last Thursday, not a bad effort.

Unfortunately, there are people in possession of Ukrainian passports trying to enter the UK that do not live in Ukraine and are not fleeing the war, there must be checks made to ensure that only genuine refugees are allowed in, or do you believe there should be no check ?

No, that was 100% quite a few years after Griffin had been there. I remember that photo being aired, it was a real head-in-hands moment. 🙈

As for Le Pen, she’s simply not what you have been led to believe she is. That the Daily Mail see fit to attack her ought to open your eyes a bit, Eb. She’s going after the vested interests and they’re spooked. It’s a badge of honour for her.

She's a female Farage and he failed 7 times. It looks like she will fail too. Don't be taken in by these charlatans. We can see how ugly Hungary has gone. From it's homophobic/racist football supporters to it's far right leader who loves Vlad.

My grandfather would turn in his grave to see this. He would say "why did I ever bother?"

Thank you, goodnight and bollocks

"A country that turns its back on those in need outside the country are just as unlikely to help poor in their own lands when they need it"

I think that's a little disingenuous to the UK there mate, compared to the rest of the world, I think we are a pretty generous in giving aid and support to countries in need, you only have to visit any of our main cities to see how popular the UK is with people seeking a better life.

I'm afraid your politics are getting in the way of your perspective.

The uk is not even generous to its own people.

Worst pensions in Europe, most food banks, fuel poverty on the rise, Brexit hitting economy twice as hard as the pandemic according to governments own figures.

Failing the Ukrainian refugees whilst the rest of Europe helps.
Failing Windrush generation still.
Failing Grenfell Tower families still.

Moving monies from public sector to private companies, as per pandemic.

And you really believe that the sort of people responsible for the above, would give generously to others ? Pull the other one.

This is my point. Anyone, ala Trump, that preaches '(insert country) first is lacking in basic humanity.

I've never seen such a right wing Government in my lifetime

Surely it’s the moral responsibility and duty of any government to put the people they are representing at the top of the priorities list?

I'd suggest that it is hidden agenda behind that statement. Of course any country must look after it's own people first. The point that goes without saying. To fight an election with that slogan, is a shout out to the far right, anti immigration mindset, in my view. Of course, I may be wrong but her history seems to suggest that she is not a moderate.

re your post, it is more like ' I have enough money to care for the welfare of my children but I am not going to look after anyone else' even though I can afford to'

The sentiment in isolation, of course, has no problem, but when it is coupled with anti Muslim bigotry and until very recent support for Russia, it paints a different picture.

Europe is on a precipice at the moment, and must decide which way it is going to jump.

No agenda, hidden or otherwise, I was looking for clarification. Your post I was responding to seemed to say that a national leader whose primary function was to represent the people who had put them there “is lacking in basic humanity.” I found that completely baffling.

No, not at all. Of course, a leader needs to look after it's own, but we have to look beyond those words to what else the leader says. Did Mandela eg, ever express views of looking after their own ? The people that do this, Trump Le Penn, Farage, Patel, do not come across as being particularly wholsome.
Do you know think that rhetoric, which should be taken for granted, appeal to a certain demographic ? Quite often they are lacking in substance.

I am glad you mentioned Trump so that I can remind you he did exactly what he said he would for the people.
I am sure he p!issed off lots of world leaders and multi-national companies by putting his people and country first.

Mélenchon voters will hold their noses and vote for Macron.

Seriously now Loh, you have to be a bit dim to be taken in by her brand of politics. Like Victor Orban another far right apologist.

The far right like the far left should never be able to be an option. Le Pen will split the country in half and it will be much worse than Donald Duck's USA as the French don't mess about when they get pissed off.

For the record - that picture above was taken when Nick Griffin was at the Railway. There are even pics of him with this lot and the then landlord of the Railway.

Even the Daily Mail calls her far right! That's some statement by them!

...and she is bankrolled by Putin's banker. I really do hope that Mélenchon voters will swallow their pride and principles and vote for Macron.

There is a lot of truth in that.

While we are failing Ukrainian refugees though, we have given more help to the country than any other European country in terms of military and medical aid. Zelenskyy has even hailed Boris for all that help.

I'm not sure how the government can separate out what is caused by brexit, the pandemic and now this war and provide accurate figures for it. The pandemic was worldwide and affected trade everywhere, this war is likewise casing problems globally.

On France, I don't think LePen will win but she has increased her support and may take Macron close. Apparently she has more support outside the big cities but in more cosmopolitan areas Macron will do much better.
If LePen does win it will be a disaster for the EU, her policies (according to all reports I have read) would effectively mean France leaving the EU.
I'm no fan of the EU but a Frexit may mean it crumbles and I don't think Europe needs that instability right now. Putin would probably love it though.

Not so great a leap when you recall that huge numbers of Melenchon’s young activist base have spent the last few years protesting alongside Le Pen’s supporters in the Gilet Jaune.

That intense, shared anti-Macron sentiment could be telling? We’ll see.

Lots of people can come together in a cause they both believe in. I'll liken it to Swansea and Cardiff fans supporting Wales but when it's the EFL we are still the best of enemies.

Supporting the Gilet Jaunes is one thing but a far left voter choosing LePen, it seems a step too far to me. If they hate both LePen AND Macron maybe it'll just split the vote and give LePen a win?

There will only be one way to know for sure, the results. Personally I can't stand Macron, I know nothing about Melenchon and while LePen seems more personable, I couldn't vote for her either. It'd be an independent candidate for me just as it is here.

Saying that, looking at our local candidates for the upcoming elections, this year I am voting Green because, having communicated with them, I like the sound of them, locally anyway. Doubt I'd vote green nationally.

The words ‘globalist agenda’ have been very often used these days as a dog whistle for anti semitism by people who believe ‘The Jews!’ run everything. I would suggest dropping that specific phrasing out of your vocabulary unless you want to be associated with the far-right.

Talking about “basic humanity” I genuinely believe that constantly raising the retirement age is one of the most evil and inhumane domestic policies. As a relatively young bloke I can expect to be working until I’m 70+ the way things are going in this country, if I’m lucky enough to get to that age in the first place. Macron wants to raise it, Le Pen wants to lower it to 60. Honestly I’d probably vote for her on that policy alone. Everyone should get a few years to enjoy life after working their whole lives.
