The greatest of all time?Frankly,it's hard to take that seriously. People are so ignorant of previous eras. People are bigger now but years ago, boxers were more ferocious,I would argue. Dempsey,Jack Johnson, Louis ,Marciano were merciless . In the rules of the time,Dempsey would have beaten Fury as would Marciano ,as would Louis.
In times like these ,they would have little chance against Fury.
As for being the greatest champion, he's not that either

As you say, he hasn't defended his title enough times to be called the greatest, even in this era. Klitchko reigned for 10 years and held 4 belts.

Pointless comparing different eras, Henry Cooper was 13lb 3 oz and 6ft 2 ins when he fought Cassius Clay, and Fury was 18.3 stones and 6” 9’ for this fight. If you are to compare, it probably has to be pound for pound Joseph Louis Barrow was an American professional boxer who competed from 1934 to 1951. Nicknamed the Brown Bomber, Louis is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential boxers of all time. He reigned as the world heavyweight champion from 1937 until his temporary retirement in 1949. He was victorious in 25 consecutive title defenses, a record for all weight classes. Louis had the longest single reign as champion of any boxer in history.

You start by saying it’s pointless to compare between era’s.
And then you …. Um …. Compare between era’s.
Joe Louis is not beating Tyson Fury. Simples.

I think I explained my rationale Killy. We can only compare with regard to rules of the day.No way would a 19 stone Fury go 40 rounds with Jack Johnson in 110 degree heat .No way. Dempsey was so savage he would have simply got right underneath Fury and used his cunning and ferocity to trap him on the ropes. Louis is many people's greatest of all time for a reason. He was not 15 tone either in his prime. He was less than 190 when he destroyed Schmelling, whose screams could be heard half way back down the aisles of fans. Joe was mad then as he undertrained for the first fight.
Those early champions were hungry and vicious in a way not seen today.
As regards the greatest Superstar of Boxing then Fury is not even top ten.
Dempsey was America's biggest sporting superstar, the first real world wide superstar, one whose fights were a national event.

So ….you are ignoring all the advances in training, science, techniques, and coaching that now creates athletes that are stronger, faster, fitter and hit harder than ever before.
Rightio …. 🤷â€â™‚ï¸

Boxers are of their age and train for their age. Fury is a freak he shouldn’t be champion, he doesn’t look like a champion, he shouldn’t have hit up when wilder floored him in the 1st fight but he did. He’s taken out everyone in front of him and the performance especially in the 2nd wilder fight was incredible. He’s so big, so strong he seems unbeatable.
A good argument can be made for any champion of any era as being the best, anything could happen if they’d faced each other but things have changed so much it’s a different sport.
Fun to think about it though.
Mike Tyson in his prime v LL or Fury, phew

Fighters should be judged on who they beat and not who they MIGHT have beaten.
For instance:
Ali beat Liston, Patterson, Chuvalo, Williams, Quarry, Bonavena, Ellis, Frazier, Foreman, Lyle and Shavers etc.
Joe Louis fought TEN "Hall Of Famers."
Fury has beaten Klitschko, Wilder and Whyte.
Fury's a formidable proposition in the ring, for sure. He ticks a lot of boxes with his size, movement, power and Boxing IQ.
Everyday above ground ... Is a good day! 😎

Excellent post.
Although a fighter cannot, of course, control who is alive when he is, it does offer an interesting perspective. The guys Ali fought makes his record look incredible.
My GOAT list in order is still …
Ali Iron Mike The Gypsy King

Opinions will differ but logic will tell us a 13 or 14 st Marciano or other smaller fighters like Dempsey would have been badly beaten by lets say a 17 stone Larry Holmes or an even bigger Foreman i understand the old school bias but a good big one normally beats a good little un personally i think the Ali era up to the Tyson era produced the best batch of heavyweights the Klitschko era was awfully poor proven by an ageing and well best his best Lennock Lewis stopping the better Klitschko in 6 rounds it has moved on the a better era now but it is still pretty poor compared to the Ali to Tyson era.

Good post but please note I have added the context of rules of the day. Dempsey was savage and would gotten underneath thee big men,as would Marciano. We'll never know of course but it's always a good craic -or should be.
Over 30 /40 rounds in the desert heat of Nevada? Fury, carrying the lumber he does would pass out.
Ali would have been almost 4 stone lighter than Fury and would have toyed with him before putting him to the canvas.

Indeed. I have spent time in the ring as an Amateur . It' true. You are on your own and the pain is all yours. No escape either.
You have to tell us about your exploits as an Amateur boxer now that you have mentioned it, what club, area, record etc Controversial Jack has told us about his exploits as a Judo expert but sadly was not very persuasive with his explanation, i am not saying he was telling porky's mind you.
