Anyone else feeling the pinch yet? I can't believe it, the electric has more than doubled, since this came into effect.

Not really using much gas at the moment, but come October I believe there is going to be another 30% increase, If that is the case HTF? Are many people going to cope? Perhaps my estimates are wrong, but by my reckoning it will be close to a 100 quid a week for Gas/Electric and also including water as well..

Now that will be bleak, the implications of this are terrible for many.

I've bought the wife a thick coat from the charity shop to cut down on the heating, we only take a bath once a fortnight (we take it in turns who jumps in first) , we've also started walking to the local food bank, it's amazing what you can save by economising.

Joking aside, I did buy my wife a nice thick fleecey blanket so she wouldn't have the heating on all day!

Come the winter, I fear this will become a reality for many. I remember a few months back, maybe it was Martin Lewis was saying how serious this will be, I didn't really pay much attention, but I can see he was on the money with his comments.

I think unless things change with these increases, then it really will be a choice of heating or eating for many.

Imagine sitting down watching tv on a Saturday night, with a woolly hat and a coat on. the way it's going, it may happen.

You and Martin Lewis are on the money, some families are really going to struggle. Increasing the Standing Charge isn’t going help people either.

Many of us in t he same boat.
I fear for some of my family who are already on a tight budget.
I can see me and the dog spending a lot of the winter months nursing a coffee in a cafe for hours each day. Cheaper than turning the heating on all day.

New one by me in Birchgrove ( just off roundabout )
Never been there, but see loads buying coffee then driving the half mile or less to their home.
Madness.
Think it will have to be a 24 hour MacDonald's.
Shit coffee, but seen it advertised for 99p ?
Plus free water for the dog ( will take food and treats for him of course )

A cup of coffee made at home cost about 10p even allowing for the cost of boiling a kettle.

I'm a big fan of Martin Lewis. He's earned / saved me a fair few quid over the last couple of years. He should be given a knighthood.

Its scary if it get really cold next winter. The added burden of more expensive fuel makes it worse, Everyone is putting up their prices for goods and services.
Then of course there is the NI increase. My wife is actually £80a month worse off with the added sickening change with the pension contribution. That's a grand a year.
My daughter is going to Uni - we were reasonably confident we could help her with her finances but we've just found out that she only gets a grant of 1100 a year. We were expecting 3000. Its bizarre that a couple earnning a few grand less than us will see their child qualify for three grand grant but someone earning 100000 more than us will get a grant of 100 quid less.
Worst of all, she will come out of uni in four years with a student debt of 80000 and then herself face the crazy world of increased prices.
Nationalise and nuclear.

Education should be free.
No student loans.

It worked in the past and helped give working class people access to a better future.

It did work in the past but these days there are far to many worthless degree course for jobs that do not need a degree. A cull of worthless course is long overdue.

Not sure what Killy's post has to do with electricity and gas though.

Perhaps it should have a separate post.

Given that graduates expect to earn greater amounts throughout their careers I don't think it unreasonable to expect them to chip in for the cost of one.

There are too many people out there with degrees that they didn't need anyway. That's one of Blair's more idiotic and deeply damaging policies. Kids were funneled off to the Education/Industrial complex for the sake of it instead of if it was necessary. Apprenticeships and actual skulls training fell by the wayside.

Of course, that also enabled Blair to backfill skilled jobs with other EU citizens, thus serving the dual role of providing cheap labour and tying us further into the Federal European project. We're paying the price for that now.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

To many people go to university just because their parents want to say "my child is in university". Its right for some but not all, how many do pretty worthless degrees and never use it later. The whole education system from 6th form up needs to be re assessed.
