I agree , but I couldn't vote for a party whose track record in Wales is abysmal and the others of little or no substance .

| Welsh assembly members on 10:56 - May 11 by Lorax | The real problem is that so many people do not vote. I get tired of repeating it but the heralded labour mandate equates to roughly only 16-20% of the electorate. Over 50% didn't vote and if they did then maybe there would be change. We're not in this mess because of people who do vote, we're in it because of people who don't. |
I'd be happy for voting to be made compulsory. Or rather returning a ballot paper, even if that is an abstention.

If it was compulsory, at the moment my view on politics would mean I would spoil my ballot paper , which is the same as not voting , at least with a low turn being measured the powers can see that there is a problem with voter apathy .which in the long term not good for the future of this country

The powers that be are probably entirely happy with the way things are. if the others decided to vote, they may choose a different party. I'm 100% with the idea of compulsory voting and having a "none of the above" box so we could reject them all.

| Welsh assembly members on 10:19 - May 11 by raynor94 | My apologies for using the wrong word, but still that's far to many snouts in the trough, for a Country of our size. Do you approve of the way Drakeford and Price have gone about this? |
I don't know much about how they've gone about this but I know it's been discussed for a long time. I do agree that 60 is not enough. Scotland eg has 129, admittedly for a population of almost 6 million. NI (with 106) is a different matter I think you'd agree. Apart from the debating chamber which we get to see there are innumerable committees which AM's have to be part of. In Westminster they have 650 MP's to spread around so 60 doesn't go very far. I'd be happy for there to be less councils.

| Welsh assembly members on 10:24 - May 11 by Lorax | A proposal then. OK but they have tried to change the WLGA numbers before and gave up. The other snouts in the trough were none to keen on having the trough taken away. 6 AM/MS's per constituency? Why do we need 6. How will these 6 constituencies be set out? The Senedd constantly complains that Wales is under funded so their response is to spend millions more expanding the number of politicians who have roundly failed in almost everything they have power over? Honestly, I don't know that it's better anywhere else because there are always politicians in charge but, if I win the lottery I'm off to a quiet Greek island and forgetting all about politics and Welsh parochialism. |
Currently Westminster is proposing to cut the number of MP's in Wales to 32. The 16 Senedd constituencies will each cover two Westminster constituencies. And then 6 AM's will be returned from each of those 16. No one has commented on the use of a full PR system from 2026. People regularly say what's the point of voting. At least with PR your vote would count, at least to some extent.

It is the boundary commission that is proposing to make all UK constituencies the same size not the Government. The total UK MPs would fall to 600. As far as proportional representation goes there was a UK wide referendum in 2011 and it was rejected 66% to 33%.

How can you compare it to Westminster? Even then, not all 650 sit on committee's. It's blatant jobs for the cronies, 60 MS's gives us 1 for every 54000 Welsh residents. Reducing the MP's to 32 brings us into line with England at roughly 1 for every 100,000 people. Why do we need almost twice the level of representation of England? Wales doesn't even have full power, but even with 60 they cannot cope with the workload of a devolved government with limited powers. Is it because they are rubbish?

Do the maths again, two constituencies means 2 MP's yet you really want 3 times that number for Wales? Why does Wales need 3 MS's for every MP? Is it because Welsh politicians are not up to the job, even though Wales still has limited powers? What if we went indy and they had full control, 150....200? Cronyism is all it is, who will be selected to stand for these seats? Family members and friends? Snouts in troughs.

Well, according to the evidence, Wales is unable to run herself as well as England unless we have twice as many politicians per head who are running a government on limited devolved powers. To answer the question, obviously any country can run it's own government but how good a job do they do? The current incumbents cannot run a government (they have said so themselves) effectively without increasing their number by over 50%. That is a devolved government without full powers too. That equates to twice as many politicians per head than England to run a government with only 70% of the powers that Westminster has. It's a farce. I'll ask again, if this goes ahead and costs many extra millions, where else in the budget will suffer?

You have been brainwashed by the BBC and the Johnson client journos at the Daily Fail. A system started in 1708 is unlikely to be fit for our modern world. You're banging your a head against the wall with this one, the dullards are so entrenched in hatred of anything remotely leaning to the right that all cognitive & and rational thought is dismissed. Their brains capacity is so limited that it prevents any other information from being absorbed, disseminated understood. Why do you think that when ever the senedd's shortcomings are discussed they without fail never comment let alone to try to defend it, they'd rather ignore it hoping people will forget .

Thanks for posting. As I’ve said before I don’t have a problem with increasing the number of AM’s if it’s linked to savings and a cut in the number of Local Authorities in Wales as that would offset the increase, but there’s no way it should come about without greater reform. I don’t have an issue with having equal numbers of men and women AM’s, nor do I have an issue with the AM’s sexual orientation, religion or race, but I am totally against the concept of closed lists because I want to know exactly who I am voting for so I can judge them on their ability to represent their constituents and do the job.

A post obviously designed to try and wind up. Making changes without the peoples consent is not a modern approach, it comes straight out of the pre democracy days when Monarchies decided these things. If you really want this then you really are a sheep. The people of Wales didn't choose this, the politicians did. A government only about 20% voted for is foisting this on everybody.
