| The list of USA a school shooting locations on 16:00 - May 28 by Flynnidine_Zidownes | But you can’t have sensible restrictions without scrapping the second amendment. |
Forgive my ignorance but there must be some in place already ? Eg if i Walked into a gun store and said I wanted to buy a gun to hold up a shop, surely I’d be refused ? That’s a restriction in itself

| The list of USA a school shooting locations on 15:48 - May 28 by Dr_Parnassus | But for me, that just makes it harder for normal people getting a gun, which are generally those that don’t cause any issues. Your criminal or mental record isn’t a surprise to you, you know if you will pass the gun check before you attempt. So you would buy privately, there are 400 million in the country to choose from. More than 1 per person. I just don’t see how it has any affect whatsoever. Same with the house visits, I’ve heard that one before and I couldn’t get my head around it. If you haven’t stored your gun correctly and you see the police at your door you just simply don’t answer or before you open the door you put your gun in the container. I certainly wouldn’t condone forced entry to anyone who owns one. That would be a clear overreach. Think how many man hours that would take to do that for what must be minuscule gain. It’s not only the officers who go to the property but then the people who keep the records. Imagine them doing that for all the guns in America, visiting millions of homes. 21 years old age limit, yep happy with that one, easy to implement. But again if you are a 20 year old with this mentality you wanted to shoot someone, again you buy illegally or privately. The only people that will be put off by buying guns against legislation are law abiding citizens, so doesn’t really prevent the people from obtaining guns that we intend to. I just don’t see how these things solve the problems being discussed. But I understand people want to do something, but they have to be effective. I just don’t believe anything being spoken about is/would be remotely effective. People were lobbying for background checks to be put in place. They did that, then realised that it doesn’t really help. It’s the same for these. |
It works in most other countries, America is going to have to want to change. Why do they pretend to offer ‘thoughts and prayers’ instead of meaningful things put in place ? How many more kids needlessly slaughtered will it take ? It should be hard for a person to buy a gun. It’s a gun, people are killed by them. It shouldn’t be simple, that’s the point. Buying privately ? Outlaw it, enforce checks on people’s ownership. You must buy from a licenced dealer or lose your license to own a gun. Spot checks, not in uniform but with ID, you buy giving the police the right to check. Don’t comply, lose your gun, It will take man hours yes, many of them. Employ people to do this, how many more man hours are spent investigating prosecuting people who carry out these massacres and then look after them in prison ? The costs is infinitely more expensive. The question is, does America want to stop these things ? People carry heavy firearms to the shops. Why ? We had Dunblane, we changed it. Completely acknowledge there’s no comparison with the mindset but it’s fair to ask what does America value more ? Guns or their children ? I know what I’m suggesting would never be allowed there but the fascination with these things is bizarre.

Most other countries don’t have 400 million guns and a mental health epidemic. They also don’t have a culture slowly being changed by the left of politics which could result in severe defunding of the police force. People can’t look at other countries and compare to America, it’s it’s own entity with its own circumstances and set of complex social and economic scenarios. You are appealing to the wrong people, as are others when they say things like “how many more kids have to die”. The normal law abiding Americans play no part in the crimes that you refer to, they also face their own dilemma that if they give up their guns they know the criminals won’t meaning they lose their protection. And for what? What changes? The bad guys still have them as they won’t be giving them up. Indeed, it should be hard for people to buy them, but you miss the point I make. All you are doing is making it harder for normal people to buy them. That’s not the objective, the objective is to stop those we don’t want having guns getting hold of them - that doesn’t happen if you only affect those people that cause no issues. Anyone with a criminal record will bypass it knowing they won’t pass the check and buy privately. You can’t outlaw private sales of guns. It’s like saying outlaw the private sale of drugs, it’s impossible. Anyone who wants drugs can get them regardless of illegalities, same with a gun in a country of 400 million of them. I think it’s naive to think that would stop someone being able to buy one. It will cost man hours yes, but for what gain? You seem to be suggesting these will stop massacres? I wouldnt have thought it would save even 1 life. For the exact reasons I highlighted. Why would it? So those man hours would be completely fruitless, it would cost billions for zero gain. If police checked knives were safely in a drawer for anyone that buys one, do you really think it affects anything? The person will then take it out of the drawer when they leave. It’s a bizarre suggestion that I have heard many times now. It’s not viable and serves no purpose. I think the error you are making is saying “America”. “America” isn’t committing these crimes, people are. The rest of the people also want protection from these criminals. Why on earth would they give up their right to defend their family knowing these criminals can carry out these things at will? Nothing you have suggested her stops that happening, it only stops people defending themselves against them. It’s not an option of “guns or their children”, this is the crux of my point. If Joe Bloggs from Kansas gives up his gun to comply with new regulations because you have said such things as “your guns or your children”. Someone then breaks into his house and kills his family - how has him giving up his gun saved his children? He’s lost both. So once we understand that criminals aren’t going to return or give up their guns, then any suggestion that it’s “either or” goes out the window. If I was in a high crime area and I knew for a fact it was teeming with armed criminals that will never comply with legislation, do you really think I’d voluntarily give up my weapon I have to protect my family? No chance and I’m sure you wouldn’t either. I think the focus of these suggestions being made by people are targeting the wrong people. It’s targeting the people that cause no issues knowing it won’t affect the people that do. All you do is take peoples ability to defend themselves away. [Post edited 28 May 2022 16:39]

They WILL continue to happen, it’s not even up for debate on that front. I understand you have suggested a few things but you can’t honestly tell me you believe they will work? Genuinely now. What you are essentially saying is “change some laws”, right? That’s what it boils down to. Laws are there for agreeable people, and law abiding citizens to obey. By their very nature - mass murderers aren’t really put off by what’s legal and what isn’t. So in terms of what you do, I don’t believe there is anything you can do at this point. I’m yet to hear any suggestion that has even the smallest chance of solving the issue. These suggestions are being made because it “feels” like people are doing something. But in reality they do nothing and we all know that. 400 million guns in the country already, the horse has already bolted. People now want to protect themselves against the lunatics that undoubtedly have them, such as the ones that commit the acts seen in the OP. I will be getting one as soon as possible once I touch down in the States if I am able to, and I hate guns - but I value being able to protect myself and my family over my dislike for an object. The only thing America can do now is employ more police, invest in security systems for schools etc certainly not defund them as we have been hearing in the last few years. It’s an ugly situation, but we can’t pretend these things will make a difference when we know they won’t.

But by doing something it may lead to a change in culture over time. At the moment, the reticence to enact any further gun control is stopping any possible positive movement. Any suggestions put forward are hypothetical and because a precise outcome can’t be identified, you’re dismissing them out of hand. Then you’re saying posters won’t engage with you meaningfully on the topic - it’s because there’s little point.

I’m not saying they won’t engage with me, I’m saying they have no solutions to bring forward, that’s largely because they don’t know any… but will still blame people for not doing them. I’m not dismissing them due to not being able to state a precise outcome, I’m dismissing them because the outcome is obvious. Remember I used the plane crash scenario with you? My point was specifically that. One person says they should add a swimming pool ring at the bottom to hope it cushions the 40,000 feet impact, and the other saying “that’s a silly idea, it clearly won’t solve anything”. The result of listening to either person is exactly the same. Nothing is solved… although one of them “feels” like they have tried to help. Which is exactly what I believe is the case with these suggestions brought forward with such an obvious lack of any kind of successful outcome from their implementation, for the reasons stated already. How do you know it won’t work unless it is tried ? How much is a child’s life worth ? There needs to be a sea change in attitude to guns. That is the only thing that will work . What about banning people carrying guns outside of their home or work ? Eg in a supermarket ? Possession of a firearm in public is a jail sentence. No need at all to have a gun outside of your house, (unless hunting eg) It appears a lot of gun ownership is nothing short of Willy wangling. Invest in mental health, have a tax payer funded health system for folk to get treatment. NRA is so powerful. Laws can make a difference. People have to want to change. They don’t | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Because you can use logic. Would you jump out the window of a high rise building if I told you that if you carry a load of feathers in your pocket you would float to the ground? You would not have to try that to know it won’t work. Same with using billions of dollars and countless man hours to knock on someone’s door to check if a gun is in a box. It’s just as obvious as the above window and feather scenario. Police man knocks on my door. I don’t answer or I put my gun in the box and then answer. It doesn’t stop me killing anyone after their 2 minute visit. Investment in mental health is absolutely something that is needed, agree there. But there is only so much you can do for mental health and much of the time it is incidents like this which lead people to diagnosing you. The Texas gunman had no previous diagnosis and whilst the Buffalo man was held for evaluation previously I don’t believe he was diagnosed either. So yes mental health is certainly an area worth investing in, but not so much for this specific issue. But more for the countries prosperity itself, it’s an epidemic. I think a lot of people have completely the wrong image of gun ownership. You probably wouldn’t know most people own one and could spent every hour of every day with them. Many people have them locked in a safety deposit box in their wardrobe or such like. Then you have your gang members who do indeed see it as some sort of contest, but they don’t tend to be the perpetrators of mass shootings. They kill each other on gang violence. Then you have hunters and gun enthusiasts who use guns for their hobbies, again the vast majority of people do this without issue. Not everyone is a gun totting, ammunition worshiping fiend like is being portrayed. I would say the vast majority of gun owners are responsible owners, owning them because so many criminals have them in their possession. To ask that group to give up their guns knowing that the criminals won’t, again isn’t doing anything to solve the issue. It just means more people will be vulnerable and maybe more victims mount up because the wrong group of people are being targeted by these laws.

| The list of USA a school shooting locations on 17:51 - May 28 with 802 views | Dr_Parnassus | Sorry didn’t address your point regarding “open carry”. Contentious one, but not really contentious in terms of it being a solution to the issue we are discussing here. In short, it isn’t one (a solution). I read something a while back that open carry states have a violent crime rate 23% lower than non open carry states. I would imagine that is due to the fear of the perpetrator knowing their potential victim is armed. I would suggest that is again targeting/affecting those that aren’t the problem. These mass murders are planned events, they aren’t something that happens off the cuff with someone getting an urge at the supermarket. So once we acknowledge that, then we go back to what is being suggested. Put yourself in the position of someone this way inclined (hard I know). Say you are person hell bent on shooting people at a gathering, it’s all you have been thinking about for months and you are determined to carry it out. Which of your proposed changes stops you to the point you physically cannot carry it out? That’s the crux of it. | |

Surely thought anything to reduce just one massacre is worth it. My brother has been in the States for 25 years, married to a Texan, two kids, they’d never have a gun. Why need to carry one to go to the shops ? Am I right in saying they’re sold in supermarkets? Completely normalised as opposed to something that should be feared and respected as opposed to seeing as a thing everyone should have. Brits will never understand it and Americans will never have a genuine discussion. Similar to the UK and a discussion on legalising drugs. Political suicide

If he wasn't there with a gun shooting the public there would have been no need for someone to be there and shoot them. Two wrongs do not make a right.

Completely agree, but the argument about how someone legally holding a gun worked is a valid argument. Not an asssult rifle, a pistol. It’s so alien to us, to hear about kids having to have armed guards is terrifying.

I don’t think it would reduce one massacre, I just asked you the question. If you were intent on doing such an act, which of your things proposed would stop you? The answer is none.

That’s exactly my point. This is why I say a ban of guns, now the damage is done with regards to guns already in the country, would be counter productive. The only people that would obey that ban would be the law abiding citizens. Meaning they cannot then protect themselves and cannot intervene in such things as your link. Casualties could well go up rather than down. It’s not a palatable thing to acknowledge gun ownership under these circumstances is desirable, but those are the facts. It’s how it is now. Until we can guarantee every single bad guy in the country will give up their gun, there is no way we should be telling people to disarm themselves. It’s a different world and we can’t compare to the U.K. or any other country.

But it isn’t two wrongs is it. She had a gun to protect herself and others against the wrong of someone like this owning a gun. The second part is irreversible. So it’s one wrong and one very natural right. Put yourself in the walking dead for a second. What’s the first thing you do? Arm yourself. Should you ever be in that situation and you say “two wrongs don’t make a right, there shouldn’t be zombies in the first place”. You would be having your face eaten off by the end of that day. Parts of America are like that, full of armed criminals looking to do you harm or take your possessions with force. Have you seen the crime rates? They already have guns which is now irreversible - the logical thing to do for anyone looking to protect themselves and their family is to own one. Thank God that woman did, and the countless lives she probably saved.

Asking these people to give up their guns in their homes knowing the threats they face is not an option. Again, it’s a different world and people need to come to terms with that. I acknowledge your point as per my link. However. Law abiding people would comply with any legislation. If you are a normal person there’s nothing in what I’ve suggested that would make it difficult to obtain a firearm. Some of the massacres have been due to people legitimately buying guns. If legislation clamped down on private gun sales, minimum terms etc, that would help to reduce. What’s wrong with having to carry a license if you have a gun ? Or not being allowed to own any type of assault rifle ? (Believe this was the case for a while and it did massively reduce these things) Would Americans agree to raised taxes to increase money spent on mental health eg or would that also not be acceptable.

which i my point which i quite prosaic and easy to understand. We don't need didactic crap from the doc. It' s about loving guns and their power. They have to change mindset as this will continue as it is. It is that simple

Absolutely, that’s my point. The law is then made for law abiding people as opposed to the criminals and bad intentioned who wouldn’t care. That means these incidents don’t decrease, the only thing that decreases is peoples ability to stop it or defend themselves. But why would it help to reduce? They but the guns legally because they can, if it was illegal to buy them then they would buy privately. You can’t police it. I can’t think of a single situation where someone is hell bent on doing a massacre go to a gun shop, then refuse him/her and then saying “Ah well, guess I can’t do it then”. America are in a horrendous state financially since the Dems have come in, so I can’t imagine further taxes are feasible. They are on the verge of a recession.

Well of course but nobody in reality would do that. The Supreme Court clarified a few years ago that you always have the right to bear arms for lawful purposes. Obviously shooting people unprovoked is illegal but the right to acquire the gun in the first place is always there and with very few restrictions.
