| Wales on 20:10 - Jun 6 by alltjack | I beg to differ. My daughter moved to Lyndhurst, a hugely affluent area, and capital of the New Forest in Hampshire in November 2018 along with her ( English) partner at the time as they had both secured jobs in the area. Myself and my wife visited for the first time in February 2019. Coincidentally, it was the weekend of Wales v England in the 6 nations, so we decided to watch the game in a pub in the main st, where my daughters partner had started frequenting to play pool and mix with the locals, the four of us watched the game, which Wales won, at full time I went to the toilet, and got followed in by two locals calling me a filthy welsh c**t, shitting myself I decidede to grow a pair and challenge them and they subsequently lost theirs and f**ked off. Besides doing the obvious tourist thing in England, this was my first experience of drinking in a local, you only get one chance at a first impression and that was mine, I shan't be giving it another go thank you very much |
I lived in London and Portsmouth and Plymouth and have told OHL of my similar experiences to what witnessed. I have English relatives and accept that we are more the same than people willingly accept. Scratch the surface with some though and there is some bizarre imperial attitude to those beyond the border. One of my closest colleagues almost unknowingly displays this attitude. He send a group message out and babbled on about nonsense and then mentioned a Welsh programmer. At no point were any of the other people discussed labelled with any nationality but he found it pertinent subconsciously to point out that the programmer was in some way different. I know that all seems harmless but it is that underlying feeling that we are seen as different that can exaggerate itself in to being called a welsh runt or similar. Remember that Ebgland was not annexed and incorporated and there are people on this side of Offas dyke that do hold a grudge about that fact. A long time as passed though.

Ridiculous basing it on one p1ssed up incident Judging by what your saying you must 50+ yrs old and in all those years that is the one and only time you have had any hostilities in some hill billy town? Something like that would never happen in say LLanelli for example if England beat Wales would it? Just like I would never go up my local to watch Wales play England in anything I have a very good English mate living in Ammanford from South England and has been living there for donkeys years his boy plays rugby for the local club, his missus is a Welsh speaker and her family have been in that area for generations and he says he won't go up the rugby club where he is a member when Wales play England because of nasty p1ssed up abuse he gets [Post edited 7 Jun 2022 9:14]

I think if you read a few of our league rivals messageboard enough you will witness a few anti Welsh comments. Maybe I am more sensitive to it wen I see it and don't notice it the other way around as much. It does happen though. One of my neighbours flew his English flag when we lived in Cwmtwrch. He never had any comments (probably plenty behind his back though) My next door neighbour was from Winsor and he has to be the most arrogant rick I have encountered (he didnt have a flag). Why he would want to move there is a mystery and he led down the other neighbours from the other side of the Severn who were very nice people.

I get your drift Jase.I read some of the material some write and have to have a spell. I cannot for the life of me imagine how some get through life .The challenges we face are many and painful yetwe see this inter necine twaddle and nationalistic garbage . We are all citizens of this world and have no choice as to where we are conceived or who begats us. Ive had some but not really been offended and Im not the easiest guy in the world to handle so it couldnt have been as bad. Northerners far more friendly by the way, without doubt. My wife and I apologise profusely for being ridiculous, and she is asking how many times, in your opinion, should we visit said pub, where she felt intimidated, before she gets the sympathy that you show your mate in Ammanford You'r right, I am 50 plus, in fact I'm 62, and have very often been in situations involving hostilities in other towns, following Swans and Wales in Rugby, ( the latest being Blackpool away trip earlier this year) and they are par for the course as we all know, drunken men on a sporting occasion do have the tendancy to kick off and know what to expect However, I have never experienced it in a nice pub in a good area( hillybilly town FFS) when out enjoying with my family, but there again, it might be the norm in England

Apology accepted But you are making all your judgements on pub and sports events where alcohol takes a bit part in what you are saying you are most probably taking about The Stag pub a very touristy pub or the Lyndhurst working mans club as they are the only ones that spring to mind in Lyndhurst? Yes Lyndhurst is a affluent area but so is Windsor where I saw a big fight involving a load of Brummies and Gypsies once. I'm taking about generalisation of how people see Welsh people, half of my family are from South England and I remember visits there in the 1970's & into the late 1980's with my mam & dad where as soon as "anyone" heard your accent they just decided you were fair game to be abused about your accent, sheep, living in a cave, not having electricity, having no money ....etc. Now the very vast majority wouldn't give two hoots as the world has shifted massively thankfully As for p1ssed up Burks in a pub that's everywhere even in The New Forest that's just life unfortunately

This kind of thing happens wherever ignorant people are (nearly everywhere). Sorry you had such a negative experience. Can you imagine the same in some valleys/Swansea/Cardiff pub if the situation was reversed ??
