Blame Russell Martin all you want 18th Aug 2022 17:37
Russell Martin has a plethora of issues, both good and bad to address before Saturdays home game against Luton Town, not least the real split in favour, or otherwise, of him continuing as Swansea City manager. On reflection that’s ridiculous. It really is. Of course that’s only fans opinion - and really at the end of it all the only opinion that matters is that of those who actually make these things happen. 0

For most of us sports fans it's more about the performance becase most clubs don't win anything.

If it was all about results for every fan then a lot of clubs would go to the wall and we'd have a Euro super league with 4/5 UK teams in it who had 120k stadia because we all went to the teams with the best result.

Sport isn't like that though, that's why Bury's ground is back in fans hands and they hope to get their team up and running again, it's in our blood. If Swansea City ceased to exist tomorrow there isn't another team I could follow that would elicit the same feelings.

Whatever I say, good or bad, whatever the results, wherever we finish, I only have one team that support 100%...STID.

I understand your comments about performance too....but ultimately sport today is a results orientated business. No fan or supporter of a club will really be happy watching their club lose week on week.
What will constitute a performance?
Pretty football?,
pointless possession football where the ball is passed sideways and backwards?
Is it a gutsy all out team performance with tackles flying in the team busting a gut and all 11 players giving 110%?
Over the years Ive seen some great performances there is a game at the Vetch against Crystal Palace which comes to mind where after cuddly Dudley was injured we were down to 10 men with our all our subs used ( only 1 back then) Colin Irwin was struggling with injury he refused to go off and he showed great leadership on the pitch by swopping positions with Bob Latchford Irwin went up front with Latch at CB who was mobile and knew what to do against strikers whilst Irwin just hung around the halfway line...that for me was a performance and from memory we won so we got a result as well.

Poll: Should Coleman ask Curt for advice/help?

I was at that game but I didnt think it was Crystal palace! I remember watching Irwin hoping around, trying to close players down. It was the knee injury that forced him to retire. I thought he was a very good player. 1983, I was 16.

Anyway, I guess to back up my opinion I'll say... versus Blackburn not acceptable, versus Millwall acceptable.

If we play every week like we did against Millwall, we'll have a far better season that last time. So even if we don't win enough to be up there challenging, it'll be acceptable to myself, if not everybody else.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Deffo Palace just looked it up

Swans 1 Crystal Palace 0

Division Two — Saturday, December 3, 1983

Darren Gale’s diving header in the 15th minute secured the Swans’ first league win in 11 games under caretaker boss Les Chappell following the departure of acting manager Doug Livermore.

Injuries to Dudley Lewis and Colin Irwin saw the Swans play the last 20 minutes with 10 men, while Irwin was a passenger.

The Swans were relegated to the Third Division at the end of the 1983-84 season after they finished in 21st position on 29 points.

Swans: Chris Sander, Dudley Lewis, Chris Marustik (Ian Walsh ht), Colin Irwin, Nigel Stevenson, Gary Stanley, Huw Lake, Paul Maddy, Bob Latchford, Darren Gale, Colin Pascoe.

Agree with the Millwall performance but we do need to stop the silly goal giveaways in the dying minutes of games and we do need to see a move to be challenging in the top quarter of the table

Unlike some on here I'm not obsessed on getting back into the PL.

I know where we belong.

And FYI we had no chance of getting back whilst your idol was in charge, never mind getting into the play offs semi then final, we were NEVER going to beat either of bmuff or brentford with the players we had but more importantly the way we played.

So you are not bothered about playing at the highest level seeing our team up against footballs big bollox.
I’m pretty sure Brentford were feeling like that a few years ago and wouldn’t change anything now

It is all about the glory or it is nothing

Hallelujah

This has to be the most important bit of that article:-

"For me, and others I’ve spoken to Saturday is a crucial game for Swansea City, and one for Russell Martin that is up there with one of the biggest games in his managerial career. Win, and show the qualities we know this side has and it will be the platform everyone wants for a successful season. Struggle and lose and the voices get louder and louder...."

That was the crunch game for Russell, as said in article above.
He failed again despite "the qualities this side has".

What now for Russell?

If he can't get the players he needs and develop them then a system change will be forced onto him.

Martin and his coaching team can see the issues and how opposition managers are setting up to exploit them just as clearly as any fan.

The World Cup break will be a crucial period.

He has brought in players he wants to play HIS way.
They can't.
Now ,that in itself says it all.

No more excuses
