It is a decent point after such a poor start, but over the 90 minutes we should have put that game to bed, we were poor 2nd half.
| Birmingham City v Swansea City : Matchday Thread UPDATED on 23:05 - Nov 8 with 1757 views | sw02sea | The defensive set up is totally down to the manager. He may have a set piece coach, (who’s about as much use as water-proof teabags) to supposedly help him out, but it’s up to him and his assistants to set up constant drills in training, day in day out. This is to instill into them, a regimented state of mind, so they know what they’re doing come game time. Take our horror show defending for their 1st goal. We didn’t make enough effort to stop the cross, 3 of our defenders bunched together marking fresh air, leaving Hogan totally unmarked on the 6 yrd line, with Benda also punching fresh air. Their 2nd goal, yet again from a set piece, saw Manning (who otherwise had a good game) the wrong side of a puffing, overweight, Troy Deeney, who fair doos to him lasted a full game, more than Ntcham ever does. How come Ntcham can turn on the brilliance, but only for the time it takes to make an omelet and a cup of tea ? Fantastic goal, and good for 25mins, but as I’ve said why can’t he last for 90mins, as per his contract? Our passing out from the back looks great when it happens to work, but we’re always one bad pass away from possible disaster. Look, I may sound like a doom & gloom merchant, that’s because for the first 20 minutes we played like real plonkers, but the next 25 mins like Real Madrid. The second half wasn’t great, but it could have been a good 3 pointer under our belts, only for us to chuck away another 2 of them. All because of schoolboy defending. Perhaps teacher will keep them all in for detention, and make them all write a 100 lines saying…. “I must listen to teacher, I must listen to teacher, even if he’s talking bollocks !” | | | |

| Birmingham City v Swansea City : Matchday Thread UPDATED on 00:08 - Nov 9 with 1681 views | RichardO | Holding your ground in the middle of the park? We drop so deep in the middle of the midfield maybe we think we need to help our defence and coming back helps them but by dropping so deep we do not give the defenders options to pass the ball forward why because the wing backs think to give width they actually need to push forward we end up exposed on the flanks and if the two forward midfielders don't drop deep there end up with 5 players waiting for the ball with nobody actually in the middle of the park. If you assume wingbacks have to defend as well as attack why do you need the two defensive midfielders to drop so deep if the wingback drop deep we should have 3 forwards who can pull wide to use any gaps created by the wing backs dropping deep. Somebody must understand what Martin wants out of his team so they can keep sustained pressure on opposition teams because when we need to we do it, like when we go behind. If Martin is urging players forward and we are ahead in a game and we are not pushing forward while leaving enough defensive cover then someone on the pitch is overthinking the game, there are eleven against eleven, if we have better quality we should be winning. Stop dropping off in the midfield inviting team to put us under pressure. Would have been happy for a point before the game but.... If we really are looking for promotion Martin really needs to sort things out because the standard of the league leaves it open to a team who can get their sh*t together. | | | |

No point in looking for promotion, we are so inconsistent and that's just during 90 mins nevermind a course of a few matches. We always seem to play within ourselves, turned the tap off when we winning, turn the tap back on when we are losing, never attack games to kill teams off. Russell Martin is one of the most frustrating managers we've had in living memory. We have ten minute spells of being like the next Man City, but the rest of the time is boring anti-football affair. I won't miss him if he goes. [Post edited 9 Nov 2022 4:39]

I expect us to be inconsistent because of the age and experience at this level within the team. I remember Kenny Jackett teams with some quality footballers for the standard of the league they were playing, if they were ahead with 15 mins to go would drop deep to deep to defend and drop points Martin's team seems to do that whenever we are ahead whether it be in the 75th, 45th or 15th minute.Taking frustration levels as you say through the roof. Not holding your ground in the middle of the park, dropping deep to calm and control the game at vital moments? No at almost every moment of the game but not doing it well, heaven forbide we have a sudden of blood to the head and attack with pace. Two defensive line of four no we are not that organised. Why take one of our taller, stronger players off with five minutes to go especially having taking off Woods earlier, let's see if we can reduce the average size of the team when we know an aerial bombardment is likely to be imminent. Very frustrating 😤

Good post. The point you made that we are one bad pass away from another disaster is well put. We overplay and eventually the bottle goes. However, there would have been opportunities before that stray pass to get the ball forward. We are just not thinking that way. It’s all about the close pass which invariably goes wrong eventually. Th3 only issue I’d disagree with if I read you right is the bit about Benda punching fresh air. He shouldn’t have had to deal with that. The three defenders should have been asked to finish their tea break a little earlier. It’s an issue that is repeating itself too often and needs addressing.

Seems now there is a consensus ,which is something positive . We utilise weak and inexperienced defenders . Bennett was an average stopper but one with experience . He was no worse than what we have, certainly compared with Wood . Dumped unceremoniously ,as was Fulton ,in September The mindset of Martin has not and will not change We have the talent ,as is obvious.

Inexperienced young defenders yes, at fault for some goals yes, at fault for all the goals no. Woods wasn't on the pitch for the equaliser, Darling wasn't playing against Wigan. I really, maybe naively, believe the three young players, Darling,Woods and Carbango are crucial to the development of the club preferable in a back 4 with Manning on the left. Even as a back three if they are given protection on the flanks. As for bad passing by defenders, if have your options limited by the opposition press and/or lack of midfield because they are playing deeper than you are means you can't play the ball wide because it will leave the WB limited options with no midfielder unless there is good movement from players up the pitch either to come short or go long into spaces behind a pressing defence. The number of times we have seen forward players looking to make forward runs but not being seen or seen to late leaving them frustrated because the player are told to pick the safe option, play the ball back which in the end is not the safe option as we concede territory, possession, free kicks, corners and goals. The young Guehi Rodon and Ben Davies made mistakes due to their inexperience but were given time to learn. [Post edited 9 Nov 2022 10:20]

| Birmingham City v Swansea City : Matchday Thread UPDATED on 10:35 - Nov 9 with 1327 views | swan65split | Before the game, I suppose we would have been happy with a point. Once again it was an early and late concede. But this season we have that never give up attitude, and kept on trying ,even at 2-2. It really annoyed me to see a few times, some passes just played with no Swans player having a chance of being there, and at one stage halfway in our half a clearance from wide lumped into the middle of the half straight to one Brum player! Our consistency on being inconsistent this season is going too cost us unless there's a quick turn about after the WC. | | | |

With the games played so far we are just a few points from play off form, but then so are the clubs above us in a more stronger position. The games against Burnley and Watford at home will be crucial. We have to beat the teams around us QPR away and Preston home as well. If we can do that it’s very much on. If.

Does everyone remember Russell saying teams will have no legs left in the last ten minutes or so of a game due to long periods of having to chase around trying to get the ball, i guess that theory seems to have been well and truly put to bed.
