Yeah, because we'll obviously not need those more practical skills. When will we want plumbers and electricians, engineers and mechanics. Due to the shortage of skilled workers it took us 9 months to get a plasterer in here. I tell my son, if he's not done so very well in schoolnot to worry, just make sure you do th best you can in English and maths and leave school to look for an apprenticeship and we'll back him as much as we can afford. That's not levelling down, that making the best of a situation, if it goes that way.

But how would Grammars help, Cat? Developing vocational training in comprehensives and supporting HE would be far more effective overall.

I don't recall promoting Grammars? I have in the past said we need to give kids mre training opportunities, including a form of apprenticeships...vocational training if you will. If my son could leave school with 2 years of an apprenticeship under his belt I'd be very happy. If he could go on to HE and get a placement with a qualified tradesperson I'd be ecstatic. A local housing association (Tai Tarian) have started doing apprenticeships again. Maybe other companies will now too, now we don't have so many Euopeans to fall back on.

The last sentence is key. I remember at the time of the bexit vote a builder was being interviewed and was complaining that if the vote was leave he would have to train local youngsters as there would be a shortage of trades people. This is not meant to be political, just pointing out that the future could be bright for youngsters.

That is very much my hope. Firms stopped training youngsters and started using cheap Euro workers, only because it saved them money. Now we are out some firms have realised they need to start training again and I have been busily nudging my son towards the idea of training to be an electrician. He's doing OK in school but he doesn't really try, his reports are good and his teachers say he is bright but hes not inclined towards academia. He's not scared to work though, he's been offered a days work down the swansea Christmas market and he jumped at it.

Whenever I get asked for careers advice for kids wanting to learn a trade I usually suggest plumbing or electrics. They're the "must fix" branch of things. Most other jobs can be put off, but if you need any plumbing or electrical work done you can't generally avoid it. There's never been a drop in demand for either of them in my nigh on 25 years experience in the jobs market. [Post edited 6 Dec 2022 7:00]

| Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back. |

I agree with that. Had I had my time over again,I would have gone into the family building business and done my time as a carpenter, joiner, plumber or electrician. No question about it. Sadly,I was of a generation whereby if you passed 11+ you were seen as a budding bank manager/solicitor /accountant/engineer,surveyor and trades were for those who failed . Good trades people always in demand
