| The Swans will be in the top six by mid February on 22:11 - Dec 22 by onehunglow | I’ve stated Russell is the most loved coach we ve had bearing mind his “achievements “ or trophies won. He has nothing at all to his name |
People get things in their head. It reminds me of when Cardiff signed Gary Medel, he came with a huge reputation, they started calling him “El Pitbull” and started laying the foundations of a myth. Whenever he had an awful game (of which there were many) it was all of a sudden because the rest of the players weren’t up to his level etc - couldn’t possibly be him of course. His nickname of course should have been “El Poodle” as he was largely ineffective at breaking up play. People fall in love with myths and ideas and it’s the same with Russell Martin. They love the romantic idea of Swansea playing possession football and being a top club like times gone by. Sadly football has moved on and so have we. We have seen the myths being built already with regards to him and all the silly stuff being said regarding being a “visionary” etc - those myths are hard for people to put down, there will always be an excuse and a reason to keep them alive rather than face the reality. The reality is of course that he’s a pretty poor manager, with a very limited tactical brain and believes that his bizarre and ineffective way of playing is an easier route to getting noticed than actually getting good results. He’s probably right in fairness to him - but that doesn’t help us, quite the opposite.

When he started his football career he had not won trophies or had Scottish caps, he got them through progress of his career. If what you are saying is applied to everyone then nobody would ever achieve anything because they would be judged at the start of whatever it is they do.

Don't waste time pointing out the bleeding obvious to one who is deaf to any logic in favour of Russell Martin, Keith.

| The Swans will be in the top six by mid February on 22:05 - Dec 22 by Dr_Parnassus | The definition of madness is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. This is his 4th season of doing exactly the same the thing and not once has it worked. The only times it looked like he may have latched onto something is when he strayed from the 70% possession nonsense. When we got a decent foothold in the league, he went right back to the old ways - and again the result is exactly the same. No wins in 7, and if that continues for another week or two then we will be 16th or lower in a flash. But I expect he will ditch the possession stuff again soon, now the pressure is building again. So we can all look forward to another small surge followed by a regression to the ludicrous in the near future. Joy. |
I suggest for a balanced view of why he reverted back his "old ways " you read Richard O's posts. Now his are an excellent example of a balanced view.

| The Swans will be in the top six by mid February on 18:19 - Dec 22 by EagleEye | Somewhat agree with your views on Manning. When he played on the left side of 3 centre backs (a few times last season) his defence was pretty good. As a wing back his defending is pretty abysmal as he is caught out of position way too often. With regards the others I am baffled that RM feels that dropping Darling before Wood or Cabango is the way to go. Darling has errors in his game but definitely no worse than Cabango or Wood. He looks a far more assured ball player and defender than the other two. It seems strange that RM made his no 1 target from MKD in front of the likes of O’Reilly (now at Celtic) & Fisher but always seems to drop him first. As for Latib, he is played out of position, looks totally uncomfortable & ineffective in a wing back role. Naughton is way past his sell by date even in this average Championship squad. OK as a back up for the rest of this season but he should not be starting |
Wasn't a great fan of Manning in a back three would sometime forgets his defensive duties pressing forward when he should have been covering, he has got a goal and an assist in him so as a full back or wingback can still press forward providing his team mates cover his runs forward, but that needs a stable team with players knowing their roles and not being chopped and changed, he is looking a lot better this year at times when team selection is right. As for Latibeaudie and Naughton both have their uses now as squad players but wouldn't be my number one choice, Latibeaudie has been messed around and played various position can't see him playing in a back three, maybe as a wingback if there is enough pace and movement around him to make the forward pass an easy option for him, think he could play as a right full back but would need help against a fast winger, again down to team selection. Darling has errors in him as all players do, in three similar instances Darling was out on the wing with an attacker pressing down on him, 1st time he made a mistake but Carbango covered his mistake, 2nd time he made a mistake, no cover we concede a goal, 3rd time he took the learnt best option and put the ball in row Z allowing us to regroup defensively if we play a back three I would play Darling , Cabango and Wood looking to the future. With a left foot wingback who knows when to help out defensively. [Post edited 23 Dec 2022 8:06]

Stubby fingers didn't mean to reply to my own post. Think Martin is seeing the fact that a team needs to be able to defend well but not seeing that of having 6 players who are first and foremost defenders in a team doesn't mean you are going to defend well,.He has tried a number of times to shore up the defence especially away from home but has ended up having to change it as the game goes on to rescue things if able. Hopefully the penny will drop that starting with a balanced team of players with a wider range of abilities is better than starting with players with the same small range of skills no matter how well they carry out those skills in training. He’s not happy, he’s playing a silly tribal game. He knows he got it wrong months ago, but no change there. The timeline keeps getting extended, it was the World Cup break, now I’m seeing mid Feb. Once that comes and goes it will be the end of the season next…. Remember this all started with, “let’s give him 10 games”…. He’s now onto his 75th and nothing has really changed, not even a 0.1 improvement in points each game.
