Poll: Christmas. Enjoyable or not

Seeing posts on here sometimes stirs up strange emotions. When I see that a parent is lost from an obviously loving family I get jealous. You see my parents split when I was 6, my mother turned alcoholic, my father was largely absent. The Swans brought us back together ony for me to find, as the years passed, that he was a coward, a hypocrite, a liar, a cheat and a thief. I haven't spoken to him for years now.

I was recently told that he is qute ill, in hopsital and maybe not coming out. he has apparently lost his marbles, or as my sister put it, he's quite deranged. I felt nothing, not even anger towards him. In fact I mourn my dogs recent passing and love and miss Albie more than I do or will my father. Sad really, isn't it.

So I see posts of others parents and I get a bit jealous but at the same time I feel a strange happiness because, for the loss to hurt so much there must have been real love, real joy a father worth loving, a Dad.

RIP Joesus's Dad.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

People find love in many different ways, a parent, a partner, a best mate. One thing that you’ll always find is the love of a dog. For you to have that upbringing but come across as the really splendid and decent person you are speaks volumes for you.

We don’t owe anyone our love, it has to be earned.

Hope you have a peaceful new year and hopefully the love of another wonderful dog x

You ve done well notwithstanding all that .
I had a traditional non conformist up bringing and it is hard to rid oneself clear of it all.

Good luck Cat,in all things.

Luck and Fortune are mostly what defines life

People underestimate them

Similar for me Cat.

My father was absent from when I was 14, 35 years later when he was on his death bed asked my sister if I’d go & see him which I declined.

Not having a dad about is a very difficult thing but it made me a much better dad myself.

First pint, getting married, birth of kids, someone to talk to when you need a dad is something I missed out on & still makes me angry.

My father was omnipresent yet those occasions on your last paragraph never happened with him and me .
You can’t have a first pint with someone who saw alcohol as the tool of the Devil and when on a new birth the main question is which church are you sending him to.

Lost both my parents within 9 months of each other when I was a young man, they were wonderful parents, it was a bad time in my life. Luckily I hadn’t long met Mrs Lifelong who was a rock and has been ever since.
2022 has not been the best of years for me personally, looking forward to better times.

What my parents did teach me was how NOT to do it so I try every day to be better. Sometimes I fail but when I do, I try to learn from it.

I'm not angry towards them anymore, my mum died several years ago and I was surprised how upset I was.

My first pint was shared with friends, some of the other stuff he was around for but I always felt let down by his contribution because he always made it about him. To be hionest it would have been better if he hadn't been there rather than spoil things as he did.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Now that's the big part that's missing from my post. My parenst being who they were, what they were, it didn't mean I had a bad upbringing, I was mostly raised by two wonderful women who loved, protected and spolied me, my Gran and my big sister. 30 years on and I miss my gran terribly. My big sister still spoils me!

If I'm a decent person it's because of gran and big sis.

Anyway, thats enough of me, this thread isn't about me.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

None taken SJ, I took it as a compliment which I'm sure is what you intended.
