| France on 18:20 - Mar 17 by SullutaCreturned | When you are getting ripped off left, right and centre by corrupt politicians who are busy lining their friends pockets as well as their own, what are we supposed to do? Whenever we legally protest these days the government tries to change the rules to make it harder for us, just as they did with recent strike action. Just as they did because of the miners strike. Our politicians do as they please with nomregard for the peoples wishes so how are we supposed to react? Meekly I guess. |
We need a massive change in our political system. Proportional representation and a compulsory vote would shake the shower up a bit.

As I have said several times, the people we need to make the changes are the people who have put us in this awful position. They re not going to change anything, nt for the better anyway. And when labour win the next GE with a massive majority, don't expect any worthwhile reforms from them either.

He's right though. You either have to save more money or work longer, how else do you pay for a longer retirement? Other things we should do are, not pay child benefit to the rich. Not charge tax on savings. Nationalise utilities and run them as not for profit. Slightly more controversial is...dump nuclear weapons and use the money for the NHS.

Most benefits should be means tested and time bound, but I would retain a contribution based option for those who have worked and contributed. I have no objection in principle to utilities being Government owned (or privately owned really), but massive objections to them being Goverment run. You probably have to have spent some time working for Govt to truly appreciate just how poorly things are run. They should be operated as if the shareholders expect a dividend. The NHS is an endless black hole. No amount of money will ever be enough in its current guise. Unfortunately any Goverment with the stones to do what is needed will probably lose the next election, so we keep doing the same thing and expecting a different result. The drive currently being taken by the government promoting over 50s to return to work is just the start of smaller but more frequent rises in the pension age . I've started taking my pension ( I didn't have to ) with he thought that even that paltry amount after 40 years of work belongs to me not them. MPs pension who serve the average term of 11 years are entitled to 17 k a year ,I had to work for 22 years above that for the same amount

So how come the french who have a bigger population than us can retire earlier then? Possibly because they are a fairer nation to their people, they look after their aged population who have paid their dues. Whereas our lot 🙄

They can't retire earlier. That's the whole point behind Macron trying to up the age. If they carry on as they are now it'll bankrupt the country. Look at demographics globally. The Chinese are starting to worry because they have an ageing population, and a declining one. The Japanese are also desperately trying to encourage citizens to have more children. There won't be the worker base or tax base in a couple of decades to sustain millions of retirees. It's not simply the cost of pensions. It's everything else that goes with an elderly population. Care costs. Medical costs. The lot. [Post edited 18 Mar 2023 9:42]

In Italy it's 67, soon to be the same in Holland, 66 in Spain, 65 in Austria, I can go on for Europe. In Australia it's 67, same as the US. 65 in New Zealand. France is the outlier. They are playing huge catchup with the rest of the industrial world. [Post edited 18 Mar 2023 9:59]

Fairer? You need to speak to the many in the urban wastelands outside many French cities. Huge social problems We are so bad a country, they cram into small lethal boats and cross the busiest shipping channel in the world. Nobody forces you or anyone to live here .

France doesn't have the problems we do, despite them taking in 4 times more refugees than we do. Which means far more want to stay there than come here.
| France on 10:47 - Mar 18 with 859 views | jojaca | Shouldn't retirement age be getting lower with technological advancements plus we have been through a pandemic and reported excess deaths are higher than normal. Surely this is an economical model out there were nobody needs to work after 50. I've never understood a system where a 72 year old continues working while an 18 year old is unemployed struggling for decent work. [Post edited 18 Mar 2023 10:48]

I think you will find there is a sliding scale in France, the more you put it the earlier you can retire & more you get up to 50% of your highest earnings for 25 years. Sounds fair to me, you?
