New voter ID rules 19:26 - Apr 14 with 4154 viewsGwyn737

Just opened my polling card for upcoming the upcoming local election, the first with voter ID required.

Lots of options for older people (aside from the norm) but not for younger voters. Anyone would think it’s being manipulated…

There’s been huge concerns about the system being manipulated and certain sections of society being disenfranchised, it was something introduced by Boris’s government. Voter fraud in the U.K. isn’t a major issue, it’s something like 9 convictions and half a dozen cautions in 4 years.

All U.K. wide elections and parliamentary by elections, recall elections, Police and Crime Commissioner elections require voters to have ID, Senedd Elections, Welsh Local Government elections don’t require voters to present ID.

So if someone knows someone who never votes they turn up and use their name and address and cast their vote fraudulently with no requirement for ID just the mention of their name and address.

So how is that ever going to figure in any conviction or prosecution figures then?

No one will complain because the real voters never turned up to vote as they always don't, so how is there ever an investigation.

It's a truly ludicrous situation that anyone can just show up at a polling station give a name and address and vote without proving through the use of ID their correct qualifying identity.

If any potential voter can't be bothered to get suitable ID then they shouldn't be able to determine the future of our country anyway and I have no idea why someone wouldn't have some form of acceptable ID already anyway.

Most of the voter fraud is in the postal vote. In some communities the head of the household, usually a man, decides how the rest of the household should vote.

Does he also decide that they don't vote in Wales.

You do not have to take your polling card with you.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

I can quite assure you that you may have been asked for your voter card but if you had said 'no I didn't bother to bring it' or 'I can't remember where I put it' you would still have been handed over a ballot paper without having to produce anything other than mentioning a ( yours presumably) name and address.

There is no such requirement to produce the voter card sent to your house at the polling station.

So you clearly have little idea of the reality of the very situation that you are vainly trying to argue about.

it isn't disenfranchisement at all, there's not a person in the country who is unable to produce some form of suitable ID or able to access the council issued ones for voting if such a scheme is implemented if for some reason they don't already have such ID.

As pointed out above they've had voter ID requirement in Northern Ireland for years with little or no fuss. Are you suggesting that Welsh voters are too thick to cope with a process that those in NI have no trouble with?

I well remember the screams of outrage when students in university were told that they had to individually register on the local voting registers just recently

Howls and howls of outraged lefties screaming disenfranchisement.

it takes me about 1 minute to re-register every year on my local authority electoral roll.

But yet many of our best and brightest in Universities and colleges around the country apparently are deemed too thick by some to do likewise.

if you're in university and unable to very quickly register on an online or paper generated electoral roll then one would surely have to wonder why that person is anywhere near higher education.

And there's not a person in the country who can't very quickly register or produce suitable ID at a polling station on polling day, with all the assistance of their helpful local council electoral office in the run up to Election Day if they feel that they have no such suitable ID.

So stop making excuses for the lazy who would rather scream I've been 'disenfranchised' rather than taking ID up the polling station with them.

Is it easier for a younger or older person to produce an accepted ID under the new rules?

Why is an over 60 Oyster card an acceptable form of ID when an 18+ one isn’t.

Why is there a need for this change when there is no evidence of significant voter fraud?

I've no idea why an over 60 Oyster card is an acceptable form of ID when an 18+ one isn't.

If you're intrigued as to why not, why don't you take a few minutes to ring up any London Borough council's electoral office and enquire for yourself.

And at the same time pledge to advise any 18 year old who you become aware of who is beside themselves with worry that they are being disenfranchised that a very quick call to their local authority electoral office will have them sorted out and on the electoral register sometimes within minutes after following their advice.

It could be your gift to those 18 year olds who have been given the vote to influence the way that our country is run but aren't really intelligent enough to ring up their local council or seek advice elsewhere without your help.

I applaud your public spiritness ( is there such a word? ) on this matter.

Or, and this would be quicker, we could just acknowledge that this is unnessary barrier as there is no evidence of significant voter fraud, put in place by the Conservative government to disproportionately affect a group that tend not to vote for them.

People who live in our largest cities are less likely to have the most obvious photo ID, a driving licence. Guess what? Our largest cities tend not to overall vote Tory either.

Never mind. perhaps those can just use their travel ID? Have a look at the accepted list below. Notice a theme?

-Older Person’s Bus Pass funded by the Government of the United Kingdom
-Disabled Person’s Bus Pass funded by the Government of the United Kingdom
-Oyster 60+ Card funded by the Government of the United Kingdom
-Freedom Pass
-Scottish National Entitlement Card
-60 and Over Welsh Concessionary Travel Card
-Disabled Person’s Welsh Concessionary Travel Card
-Senior SmartPass issued in Northern Ireland
-Registered Blind SmartPass or Blind Person’s SmartPass issued in Northern Ireland
-War Disablement SmartPass issued in Northern Ireland
-60+ SmartPass issued in Northern Ireland
-Half Fare SmartPass issued in Northern Ireland

If we want young people to be involved in politics why would we put barriers up?

No barriers they just have to register to vote like everyone else and apply for a " voter authority certificate " if don't have suitable identification.

Seems people are making a lot of fuss over a minor issue.

No barriers except for the barrier?

I suppose it's not worth the fuss, after the next GE it'll probably be rectified.

Were they voting in a multi-party election in that conference?

If not that's just whataboutary. No correlation at all.

Mind you, if you keep looking at the Guido Fawkes website someone will be daft enough on there to suggest there is some.

I see so we can only read items that you approve of these days? I hadn't realised that.

If you would be good enough post up a list of publications and websites that I'm allowed to read and quote from in the future then I'd be very grateful.

A publication such as this perhaps?

18 years ago and nothing to do with voter ID disenfranchising certain groups.

But certain groups aren't disenfranchised we've already established that.

Anyone wishing to vote under such an ID system can freely gain access to suitable ID from their local electoral office if they qualify to vote in the unlikely event that they don't already have any.

Why do you keep repeating stuff that clearly isn't true despite a number of us taking the care, time and compassion to explain a simple process to an obviously distressed person in order that you are able to understand.

I feel your torment, please don't hesitate to get in touch if wanting further advice on what appears to be such a distressing subject for you despite no one else being remotely bothered.

You don’t seem unbothered 🤷🏻‍♂️

At no point in this thread has anyone shown evidence of significant voter fraud due to ID issues. (Although you did find an ID requirement for something other than an election and an example of postage fraud from nearly 2 decades ago)

Is it easier under these regs for a young person or and old person to vote? Why are these regs needed?
