| Welsh Tourism 10:58 - Jul 17 with 69104 views | Dr_Winston | https://www.theguardian.com/uk Already on its knees in recent years thanks to the Welsh Govts unnecessarily heavy Covid restrictions, refusal to deal with M4 congestion and seeming intention to actually make getting around in Wales even harder. To top that off we've still got the mooted tourist tax to come. Is there anything in this country that they can't screw up? | |

I wonder if they’ll publish a similar story when the same thing happens in Cornwall later this year or early next year? The 6 Conservative MP’s across the County are facing protests from locals who’ve been priced off the property ladder - and as second home owners don’t get to vote in Cornwall it’s only moving one way! It’s an issue in quite a few parts of the U.K. and it’s not easily solved. We’ve got too many people being allowed in to the U.K. on account of skills shortages, not training our own citizens up, U.K. citizens who can’t or won’t work, jobs we can’t fill etc etc. There are not enough houses being built for the private market and not enough social housing be built and house prices are far too high. All this together and a couple of other issues soon leads to a toxic mess.

Yeah OK , just think how much lower our bills could be if they weren't so generous with the higher echelon pay structure or if they actually spent more of their "not for profit income "on updating their infrastructure which they could have but chose not to with the effect of polluting our beautiful rivers and coastal areas then paying the richly deserved fines using the consumers money , dream on sonny

This is the problem, the Senedd are hell bent on not making it sustainable. For it to be sustainable there needs to be a structured plan with subsidies and funding available for it to grow, not just tax it out of existence.

The part you are not getting about this is, the people moving here are largely English retirees, those putting further strain on our NHS, those driving up house prices meaning our young cannot afford to remain within their birth area. Overall people are leaving Wales, the young are going because they cannot get up the ladder here. We are becoming an English retirement village. It's called a managed decline. We'll have an ageing population that increases whilst the young people leave meaning there'll be nobody to look after the ageing population. Social care will suffer even more, the NHS won't be able to recruit. A coutry needs its young and ours are being driven away.It might be alright if we had plenty of immigrants to replace our young but most of them want to stay in England. 39% go to London and those who come to Wales tend to be those waiting on a decision and can they even take a job? https://migrationobservatory.o

Wales isn’t identified in this chart but it’s not hard to estimate. Essentially it’s saying that the UK is poor with one rich region.

I’ve lost 3 teachers in the last 18 months who’ve gone abroad, one to Canada, one to Australia and one to Dubai. These countries are aggressively chasing staff, offering much more in regards to pay, conditions and lifestyle to what they get here. There are also fantastic tax breaks in some of these countries and with uk house prices, young staff are moving to save deposit money. Unfortunately they don’t always come back to the job.

The population is growing but not the skill set to support it its future development, how many coming over on the boats over the past ten years or so will be trained engineers doctors ,

Aye it will be a ghost town out west soon enough…..you got to love councils like Pembrokeshire and Cornwall, they exist from nothing but tourism, yet make everything difficult for it to function properly. You reap what you sow. 98% farmland at present and you can’t build any starter homes for the mythical few who want to stay in what are the two poorest counties in the uk almost? Course you can’t, tax those that already pay a load of tax to give the work shy a free ride….welcome to Wales.

Old English people are not moving to west wales, believe me. They do there research, they are wealthy and there is no private facilities west of swansea, withybush isn’t a hospital worthy of note so you’re doomed if you need to go there.

I said they were moving to Wales, I wasn't that specific about the area. The survey clearly showed that people were moving away from the countryside too, into more built up areas like Swansea and Cardiff. Those holiday homes in West Wales are staying empty most of the year then.

You’re talking drivel. Firstly about “old English” people not moving to west wales, they are moving here in large numbers, speak to any estate agent down my way and they’ll confirm it. Secondly, you’re also wrong about there being no private facilities west of Swansea, there’s a private hospital in Bancyfelin just outside Carmarthen which provides a pretty comprehensive range of services. Withybush is an old general hospital and needs upgrading, there are plans to relocate part of it and Hlangwili to a new build site near St Clears/ Whitland.

Yeah speak to them all the time, I’m selling a place down there at the moment. In fact, I’ve had wealthy old English people show up at my door, tell me how much they love the house, how it would cost a million in Dorset or Cornwall, but they can’t move here because the welsh nhs is so bad, and withybush a shocker. I told them about that tiny place I’m bsncyfelin, I checked it out for future ref, they barely do anything there. You can book it but it won’t happen there. A mate I know runs an auction house based out west, it’s dying on its arse…reckons drakefords policy’s have knocked 10/20% off value in 12 months as second home owners sell up. I’m sure the locals will all have a house to own soon, just no work, cafes or pubs to go to, as they will all be closing without tourist dollar.
