Gets a fair bit of stick on here.

His performance yesterday produced 90 touches of the football with a 94% pass success rate, with a very good goal to top off an excellent performance.

I'm often critical of Grimes for two reasons. Firstly because he's nowhere near as good as a lot of people make him out to be, and secondly because I believe that he's a lot better than he so often shows us.

The pass success rate is often trumpeted with him but is fairly meaningless without context, as most stats are. A 60% pass success rate when those passes are in and around the opponents final third is a lot more impressive to me than a 94% pass rate completed safely in your own half.

It was nice to see him get a shot away as he always has had that in his locker. The problem is, and always has been, that he so rarely takes it out of there. He can make incisive attacking passes. He can (and probably should) get five goals a season from the edge of the area. We need to see a lot more of it from him. Maybe he's one of the ones who has taken a bit longer than others to adjust to what Duff wants from him.

Can you name many games when he hasn't been there?

From memory he only missed one last season and his absence was not even remotely felt.

He’s a good player who works to rule. Duff needs to set him a target of one shot per ‘45 and hold him to it, same for Fulton. He’s capable of letting it fly but has been tutored in to recycling possession at all times. The sort of dip he took yesterday is well worth it as even if the keeper had been stronger the chances are he knocks it in to the path of a Cullen or Yates. Shoot to score, it’s still a simple game.

Get forward take on some shots, score goals.
It’s a part of his game he rarely seems to want to do.
He has loads of talent.

A fair few clubs have looked at him over the years, his inability to be more positive I’m certain has put them off.

He don't miss many because he's irreplaceable at what he dies for us,3 or 4 different managers think the same..model pro hardly ever injured keeps himself out limelight even when speculation about him..

Possibly Duff will get more out of him than Martin managed. Even with Ginelly injured, Lowe and Key bring a bit more pace and drive, Yates and Cullen will make runs all day, so he may not play conservative sideways passes as much.

Everything used to go through him, Patino is sharing that with him now, so he probably has got a bit more licence to get forward and influence the game.

A thinking man's player, always highly rated by our managers past and present also by opposition managers.

Millwall manager on Grimes.

“We started too passively and allowed Swansea to move the ball. They move it well and Grimes is as good as any midfielder on the ball – every time you go and press he just plays around it."

There’s a reason he’s played almost every minute for the last five years.

In the commentary on the radio there was mention of the rotation within the midfield three. Wonder if they meant once one of the midfield pressed forward with the ball, one drops back to cover and the furtherest forward drops square to offer options while creating a gap for the oncoming midfielder to press onto allowing sight of the forward's runs and wide players runs.
Will have to have a look on Wednesday to see if we are creating those forward runs with the ball in the middle of the park which might be showing Grimes in a favourable light and the midfield being a tighter unit..

There's also a reason why no other club has ever made a serious attempt to sign him over the last nigh on ten years, even when they could have got him on a free.

Downes was here for less than twelve months.

So our last three, probably going to be four, managers all got it wrong? Downes was outstanding for us, not sure his success is a stick to beat Grimes with.

Downes was excellent for us and moved to a Premier League team, didn't cut it and is back playing in the championship. The jury is out on how far he can go.

I accept he doesn't want to go but isn't the questions still valid, why has nobody made a serious bid for him?

Downes had a very good season and was snapped up, his subsequent fialure and his being back in the Championship is irrelevant.

If Grimes had been as impressive for us, surely somebofy would have made a genuine attempt to sign him.

The fact that he realises the grass isn't alays greener, that he and hs family are sttled and happy down here shows that he is just brighter and more aware than the average money grubbing footballer!

As faras it goes I have never doubted he has the skill, he definitely has it in him to be much better than we have often seen. Quite possibly it was (the last 2 seasons) his instructions from Martin that negated what he COULD do for us and turned him into a backwards looking, negative player. maybe Duff is tellng him to be more ambitious? In which case maybe we'll see the real Matt Grimes?

An incredibly consistent performer he’s been outstanding for our Club. Anyone who does not appreciate or recognise his huge contribution has little or no idea. He makes the team tick and is the perfect link, an intelligent footballer who uses the ball wisely with a superb range of passing.

There’s a reason why so many managers continue to pick him. It’s his consistent contribution. I think he’s capable of getting a few more goals too.

Dr Winston has always had plenty to say but in the main he’s pretty clueless. Despite his lack of understanding, experience or knowledge of football he’s got an opinion on everything, usually being stubborn enough to keep digging deeper holes for himself. I doubt very much if he’s ever kicked a ball. Apart from a beach ball as a toddler 😂

Downes is physically bigger than Grimes and probably better suited than Grimes to the PL. That’s maybe why West Ham took a punt (though he is also a local Essex lad). His size makes him slightly more versatile in that he could slot into a back five as he did with us. His passing ability & style is very similar to Grimes, except he is right footed. His scoring & creative record equally as poor or possibly not even as good as Grimes.

Clubs from the EPL have had a look at Grimes (Fulham & Everton at least) but he lacks the X factor as does Downes hence his return to the Championship. He has not pushed too hard for a move & is settled as stated elsewhere. If Grimes added creativity & goals to his game he would have moved some time ago
