Welsh name for our football teams. Why not? 16:39 - Nov 17 with 10846 viewsReslovenSwan1

Wrexham are being pressed to change their name to 'Wrecsam'. It sounds the same and should not trouble our English speaking friends too much.

https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport

"Ham" is an Saxon word for brook I recall so it would be a Welsh mangling an original English name. Llanelli is now only Welsh which is good and the old mangled Lanelly has gone. There is Pen y bont now in the Cymru Adran. Bari and Caerfili seem straight forward.

People would object to a change in the whole word not pronunciation for example 'Swansea City' to 'Dinas Abertawe'. It is easy for our non Welsh speaking friends to say but falls foul of tradition. Names and shirt colours are staunchly defended by traditionalists. As a relaxed liberal myself I can see this is valid.

I do however propose to the good forum that the women's team be changed to 'Dinas Abertawe'. "They aint got no tradition" so it will not be a big leap into the unknown.

I sometime get irritated when I see "Swansea sign up new goalscorer" . I open the page in excitement and anticipation to discover " Stacey Morgan has signed from Pontypridd United".

Another thread for the faithful during the international break. Kindly.

It goes a hell of a long way to avoid confusion and will create more.

So my question in reply to your first sentence is why not?? Are the words ladies or women now seen as somewhat discriminatory?

Discrimination means

" to recognize a distinction; differentiate" . The "womens" or "Ladies" suffix does this.

I cannot discriminate the Robyn Pinder headline because she has a male sounding name and plays for Swansea city.

Media people and sometimes even the club like to leave out the name suffix.

That's just one definition and not appropriate in the context that you use it. You have to discrimate between different things, but you shouldn't "discriminate" between them by showing prejudice to one over the other.

In fact it could be said that by changing the womens team name you are showing prejudice.

Well the media etc. need to understand that confusion is evident if they don’t differentiate.

We easily use the terms ‘under 21s’, under 18s’ etc. so use ladies or women..

I’m sure the players themselves would rather that as well and not seen as being remote from the Swansea City brand by being called something else which will be meaningless to others.

Welsh names will stay meaningless until it becomes general use.

Swansea women do not play in England they play in Wales and almost all their players are Welsh.

It would be meaningless to only people with an agenda.

So what is your agenda here?

It seems to me that you are trying to promote the Welsh translation of the ladies team for that reason only and not to eliminate confusion. How on earth can using the name you propose be seen as making things clearer. And although it maybe Wales only at the moment, who knows what the future may bring.

That said, it dies annoy me when I see a score line come up on Sky or the promotion of a good looking game only to later find out it was a ladies match. I’m not denigrating that but my interest is in the men’s game solely. How do you suggest differentiating the English clubs’ names? Or maybe you don’t really care because that doesn’t fit in with your agenda.

I can’t believe on my return to the forum in 2023 I’m feeling so triggered by Resolven’s gender-agenda. So offensive they/it are arguing for the labelling of women because they/it think it’s more palpable to the wider community as a first line of defence to be broken down. Bloody patriarchy

I suspect you are more triggered by the concept of the women's team having a Welsh name while playing exclusively in a welsh leagues with almost exclusively Welsh players many of who speak Welsh.

One wimpish argument was that the men play in the English system and we should perhaps as the FA for permission despite the fact that is nothing to do with them.

The second argument would be that no one would understand what Abertawe meant. This is feeble as well as once told most people with any brain pick it up spontaneously.

Pen Y Bont have led the way. The Men's team have no name suffix. Why does the Women's team need one?. Just use the Welsh name job done.

Surprised you didn't know that under the Equality Act 2010 you're not allowed to be discriminated against because of the language you speak

It was only a bit of fun mun ….
