Sending kids away to boarding schools 09:40 - Mar 17 with 883 viewsonehunglow

Very emotional interview now with Earl Spencer about sending young kids away to school.
And they call them “ privileged”
They are anything but .
Horrific abuse at most public schools of yore

Poll: Christmas. Enjoyable or not

Three of my cousins went to boarding schools. One couldn't stick it and had to be removed

Correct - joyless and expensive.
Almost cruel.

Produces weird people like Mogg and Johnson, so its also based on dangerous exceptionalism.

Private school education is far superior to anything the state system can offer. Especially since labour killed of the grammar schools in the 1960s. Children from disadvantaged backgrounds and councils estates had a chance of a decent education in grammar schools.

Still labour MPs like Abbott and Blair still thought private education was best for their education.

Starmer was of course educated at Reigate Grammar School. A private school of course. Corbin was educated at a grammar school in Newport Shropshire.

When Starmer started at Reigate school it was a state school, it changed to become a private school towards the end of his time there. He was given a bursary when in the 6th form and was exempt from paying fees.

Private school education produces better results than the State system because teacher pupil ratios are much lower in the former and teachers have more time to spend on individual children, whereas the underfunding in the latter sees the ratio of pupils to teachers increase significantly.

It was still a Grammar School when he started there as Surrey had not closed them.

Just the grammar school system gave underprivileged children a chance to shine unlike most modern day schools. He current state school system is very poor. Labour closed all the decent schools leveling the system down. Parents who can afford a decent education for their children take the opportunity to do so over 500,000 in private schools. If these all closed the state system would collapse with the extra numbers and extra funding needed.

Parents who value education now move home to make sure they live in the catchment areas of the better state schools Leaving deprived children in the poor preforming schools.
This system has resulted in an even wider educational gap than the old system.

Well of Labour MPs still send their children to private schools despite their political views.

I'd also suggest that private schools produce better results because parents actually care when they're paying extra for it.

Too many children in the state system let down by families who don't give a toss as long as the benefits keep coming.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

I watched a programme recently about the education system in Finland.
They are top 3 in the world.

They ban fee paying schools.
All kids have the same education.
5 hours a day.
No homework.
Incredible.

I went to boarding school from the age of ten to sixteen.

My brother went too but left early and returned to the local comp. He found that the kids there were ahead of him in their lessons.

This was many years ago, so I don't know how it stands now.

The can be little worse an experience for a pre teen kid being sent miles away to go to school.
I do not see it as “ privilege”in any way .

I saw a documentary on this boarding school up in Scotland somewhere, no idea how it passed its health and safety inspection. There was a tree in the grounds that actually attacked people, a forest full of massive dangerous spiders right next to the school and one of the teachers was a werewolf.

Yeah, I saw that, weren't they also given sticks to attack each other with? And there was a giant poisonous snake in the plumbing.

Madness I tell you.

Back on the OP, well actually on Builth's post, don't Finnish children also stay in schooluntil 18?

Boarding schools, I don't like the idea and would never have sent mine to one, not even if I won the lottery.

They don't start school until 7.
It works.

Obviously so, the thing is we'll never try it over here. Different mindset, different culture and an all around fear of doing something vastly different, it means change and our politicians ain't great at that.

And then burnt to the floor soon after.

Why do you think that is? I think I know.

If my average stare primary school was funded at the same rate as an average private school the budget would rise from £2.1 million to £8.4 million. I reckon I could make some improvements with the extra.

I’m not going to bore everyone again with grammar schools, the evidence on how they damage social mobility is empirical.

Just because someone knows somebody else who went to a grammar and became an engineer does mean it’s a good thing overall.

Well said Gwyn.

Many capable pupils get life chances via their local comprehensives.

Dividing young people on ability at 11 years old is bonkers.
There has to be room for the later developers without losing all the joy and social benefits of a local community school.

The comps dont produce the likes of Johnson and Mogg.
They would be sorted right out.
They might even think of other people now and again.

I believe schools should be more specialised to individual pupils needs. This is where comprehensive schools fall short. So much time was wasted for me sitting through subjects I had absolutely no interest or desire to achieve in. I couldn’t count the hours I spent desperately trying to stay awake in an RE lesson whilst some old biddy droned on about a god that doesn’t exist when I could have been excelling in something I had a genuine passion for like history or biology.

I definitely see more of a place for vocational qualifications.

However it’s a political minefield. Any party that doesn’t say they want a world class academic schooling system would get hammered.

What then happens is they cherry pick the ‘best’ bits from around the world and ignore the cultural differences. Shanghai and mastery maths has been all the rage for while over here, but there’s no way we could run schools in the way that they do.

This, 100% this. It works in Finland, more vocational training.
