"Just over a decade ago, autism and ADHD were thought to be mutually exclusive. But in recent years, all that has changed."

Unfortunately it doe appear to be an exact science.

I’m aware or some professionals who a known to be a safer bet when it comes to diagnosis.

It’s anecdotal, but for some time I’ve seen a marked difference in level of diagnosis between NHS and private.

This may reflect on NHS provision but that wouldn’t square up with the behaviour I see from the children day to day.

Sorry mate, I don’t agree.

People don’t go private in order to get a diagnosis so they can get more money. The vast majority anyway.

1) You can’t just get an assessment, without some link to it ie. Some specific traits or worries that the child is actually on the spectrum.
2)Why would anyone want their child misdiagnosed, so they would then get drugs, which may harm them as they won’t even need them, if they don’t have the condition.
3) These assessments cost thousands. Jobless Mum can’t afford them, fact.

The marked level of diagnosis is probably because the private clinicians have less red tape. They don’t have someone over their shoulder telling them they can only say yes to a certain percentage, because the country can’t afford to help too many with ASD. They hate people like that, as they will always be a burden and never pay any taxes.
Quite scandalous, as it’s the government and their society that’s probably causing the rise in all these neurological disorders, viruses and whatever else we are all dying of.

IMO the rise in ASD disorders isn’t because of over diagnosing or bias, it’s because of all the crap that we’ve had to eat, breathe, drink, stick in us.

Children under 16 can apply for DLA - over 16 PIP.

Yeah, you’re right, but essentially they’re the same thing.

Edit:
And my point is, if a child has enough symptoms to value a diagnosis, they should also be claiming PIP/DLA.

Just because someone outwardly presents in a certain way , it doesn’t mean they don’t meet the criteria for extra help.

I would hazard to guess that nowhere near enough people with ASD/ADHD are claiming what they deserve.

I don’t think people are going private to get money for an instant.

The group I’m talking about are very specific.

It’s parents with money whose children don’t behave. They’ll go for a diagnosis as its easier than parenting properly and let’s them off the hook.

They get to say “my child can’t help it - they’re autistic”.

Drives me nuts as it takes away from those with general neurological needs. It also feeds into the idea that autistic children can’t behave which is just a lazy trope. ASD kids present in a myriad of different ways.

Ah right, I see what you mean.

But I still don’t think a diagnosis will help in that way.

A diagnosis isn’t just done in a face to face consultation. There is a written and problem
Solving test to do, similar to an iq test. Then the results are correlated with the previous symptoms of the person.

And that’s for adhd.
Autism assessments are even more detailed.

On top of that, adhd drugs work on a specific part of the brain. They are stimulants, which have been shown to actually help an adhd brain focus and calm down.
These amphetamines would not have the same affect on someone without the condition, and probably make them worse behaved.

I’m not saying you’re wrong mate, but those types of parents must be very few and far between.
The devastation of your child being diagnosed as autistic, must be lost on these people.
What about the care plans and further support they will have to give their child now he/she is classed as autistic.
The amount of fighting you have to do against the system, to enable them to be treated fairly and get funding for extra sensory tools/toys, plus different education streams.
It’s a minefield and one I wouldn’t wish on any family.
To choose to put your child and family in that situation, when they are just naughty, is absolutely shocking and those parents should be locked up

It’s part of a wider trend of medicalising behaviour and it’s really worrying.

Anxiety is the most recent thing.

Anxiety is crippling for those who suffer. However it’s become a proxy for some for not liking things - swimming, homework etc.

I’m passionate about giving children the support they need which is why it’s frustrating when that is compromised by sharp elbowed parents - it’s such a drain on resources for those who really need it.

I dare say that a lot of the problems schools and the wider community have to deal with stem from poor parenting.

I know a guy who going back to the late 60’s and 1970’s was a bit of a load, thief, burglar etc. He ended up having 4 or 5 children who became problems for the wider community, they got in trouble with the police, bunked off school and became NEETs, courts, prison etc and were huge drain on society. They’ve now grown up and have their own kids and the cycle is repeating itself. Over the course of 3 generations it’s gone from 1 to about 4/5 to around 15. Based on each of the 15 having 2 kids and not making lifestyle changes, we could be up to 24 to 36 “dysfunctional”individuals in 20 years.
When the kids are young they don’t know any different, they get their values and moral compass off their parents and they’re brought up in to dysfunctional world, their lives are likely to mirror those of the previous generations and will be filled with Adverse Childhood Experiences , in addition their long term prospects are poor.

Amen.

Some areas of Swansea are seeing their third generation of "problem" families.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Yes I agree. Anxiety is a normal every day response to uncomfortable stimuli. Totally normal and beneficial if worked on correctly.

There probably is a problem with overdiagnosis there, as feeling anxious is usually normal and not linked to general anxiety disorder.

Very good post.

Yes adhd, GAD, and others can be brought on by bad parenting.

If you read some stuff by Dr Gabor Mate, who was diagnosed with adhd as an adult and is a leading expert in the field…he says that ACEs and parenting is a massive issue and cause of addictions, adhd, plus others. He really is an amazing man, author, speaker and physician.

Do work in a local big Supermarket chain of stores .

Start work at 4 pm , schoolchildren are getting their sweets crisps etc , sitting outside .
Same children are still hanging about 7pm , same clothes on walking bored in the aisles .

Wifi and toilets are available to them as an attraction , but why do they need these as an alternative to going home , having tea , watching a bit of tele , then going out with mates .

I was lucky , parental guidance was my upbringing , my dad then said , stop showing off if I was a bit of a brat , lesson learned .

Later in my working life have been working alongside a person diagnosed as on the Autistic Spectrum and also suffers ADHD , tolerance must be part of the job description .

Feel for the youngsters today , there are some good ones about from my experience too .
No outlets for them , alas , mobile phones are their go to solution , no guidance for them .
