It’s a ridiculous anachronism. The Founding Fathers when coming up with the US constitution pretty much just plagiarised the English bill of rights from nearly a century before. They took out the weird bits and the stuff about the king and sprinkled in a bit of Magna Carta which was in vogue at the time but it’s essentially a 17th century idea. The right to bear arms in that context was aimed at pikes, pitchforks, scythes and other farmyard equipment. Muskets were around but you couldn’t really bear them, most were too heavy for a normal man to carry. Especially if you had come down with a bout of Black Death. And once you shot it once it would take a team of four people eight months to reload it. | |
