Trump claiming that the US has "captured" Maduro.

Hope he's right. Venezuela could be a wealthy and prosperous nation if if wasn't ruled by corrupt Socialists. Albeit it's kinda their own fault for being dumb enough to elect Chavez in the first place.

Putin wants Ukraine , China wants Taiwan and now The Don wants South America as as a starting point for World domination by the real players in World Politics .

Our UN , NATO and other hot air waffle will be pushed to the into touch by the top table Leaders , all of them with the aim of control .

Starmer is sitting on the fence , lets not jump to conclusions , lets see the facts in detail .

We are so far off the bigger picture of these players with control , lets not rock the boat .

This is like a return to 19th and early 20th century "great power" politics. The post-WW2 creation of the various UN institutions and the attempt to create an international rule-based order looks very shaky.

History will show that we have had a Russian Empire and a Chinese Empire but never an American, unless you call the USA an Empire.

Starmer is as is now our country ,irrelevant in world politics .Why would Trump consult with him , a leader of a government who's quite happy to hang its own SF out to dry , a leader whose appointed a deputy leader whose loyalties lie in a country thousands of miles away , a leader of a government overseeing the invasion of the country he is supposed to protect.
I bet Trump must have joke book full of the subject the PM of this country

We’d be far less irrelevant if we were still part of the EU.

What support would we get from the EU? What support did we ever get from the EU?

Don't get why people still think it's anything more than a declining irrelevance on the World stage. Economy tanking, Nationalist political parties on the rise in every major nation involved, treated with disdain by the major players (US and China).

For a start :

Our voice would be amplified significantly with more global leverage in trade, security, and diplomacy.

We’d have a larger economic clout through being part of a significantly larger trading bloc.

Collective security support.

We’d have increased leverage with the US being able to influence policy with the EU.

Just to be clear, I don’t want to rejoin as that ship (and its terms) has sailed. I’ll continue to point out the issues it has presents.

Our voice would be one of many and subservient to the EU Parliament. We'd have been better off boosting the Commonwealth instead of throwing our lot in with Europe.

The GDP of the EU is a third less than the US and falling. Fifteen years ago it was bigger.

We've got that already through NATO, although the Americans are understandably fed up of being taken for granted.

The US doesn't give two shits what the EU thinks about its policy. That much is obvious because of the travel bans placed on EU bigwigs who seem to be under the impression that they can tell US companies what to do. The EU never paid much attention to us anyway, except when it came time to spend our contributions on subsidising French farmers.

The game is changing. The EU is not a power. Never was. Never will be. It's the US, China, and maybe, in 30-40 years, India.

Which examples of us being subservient to the EU for decades were you particularly concerned about? If the EU didn’t pay us much attention, why need to get out.

GDP isn’t a great measure of an individuals life experience. Yes, the headline figures look good for the States but it tempered by (compared to us) their higher crime rates, income inequality, poor overall health outcomes including higher infant mortality, vast amounts of people in jail, poor workers rights etc.

I agree with you the world is changing but, for me, isolating ourselves is not the answer. The other option is going to the states with a begging bowl and all that entails.

As part of the EU we couldn't formulate our own trade policy. We were bound by EU regulations on many, many things. Our own National Parliament had no control over large swathes of our own National policy. That is subservience.

Personally I voted to leave because I wanted no part of an organisation that was purposely designed to limit the impact actual voters could have on the running of it. Show me how I can vote Von Der Leyen out of office and I might reconsider.

GDP is a measure of how well an economy is functioning and how much richer the populace is. Show me a country where GDP is dropping and I'll wager most of them are becoming increasingly indifferent to the supposed benefits of "life experience". European economies are flatlining and the continents best and brightest are looking elsewhere.

"I agree with you the world is changing but, for me, isolating ourselves is not the answer. The other option is going to the states with a begging bowl and all that entails." Maybe if this country could provide statesmen instead of a 3rd rate embarrassment of a Deputy PM who is a previous role described Trump as calling him "a tyrant" and "a woman-hating, neo-Nazi-sympathising sociopath" (non of which has been proven ) , what ever you think of the US ,I'd much rather us be aligned with them than a unelected , undemocratic EU whose shown to be weak and ineffective .

Is trade better now?

Which national policies did the EU stop from enacting in the approaching 50 years of membership?

Of course reducing GDP isn’t a good thing, but neither is rising GDP with widening wealth inequality.

You do realise that Iranian missiles got through Israeli air defences with ease and battered Tel Aviv and other targets during the recent 4 day war. Many were Russian missiles. There are no air defences anywhere that intercept all but the basic slower ones.
