2026 Unemployment 09:53 - Jan 9 with 4232 viewsJACKMANANDBOY

My son spoke to a recruitment consultant yesterday who works for one of the big UK consultancies. She said that the number of vacancies she is being asked to source for has plummeted to the levels seen in COVID.
A couple of conversations I've had with someone looking for a job and a guy that employs around 80 people back this up, finding a graduate job in the North East of England is very difficult. People are sticking with their jobs in South Wales, the employer has seem staff turnover almost stop in the last three months, he is using overtime a lot more to cover additional demand rather than take people on. The staff profile in his business means his NI bill has doubled in the last year.
With higher employment taxes, increases in business rates, increases in IHT for family businesses, the tightening of employee rights and the possible use of of AI, employers are going to think very carefully about hiring.

Unemployment is going to increase this year.

In relation to the second point, quite a few employers (including Tesco) now employ staff on part time contracts for example 4 hours per day but actually require the staff to work “compulsory overtime” in some cases up to and beyond 37.5 hours a week. This means if the staff report sick etc they only get paid their contracted hours, it also makes getting a mortgage more difficult as the contracted hours income etc is so low. Annual Leave payments will also be reduced in comparison to a full time worker.
Part time work suits some, as do zero hour contracts, but there are also potentially massive pitfalls.

There are good and bad employers out there.

Leave will be calculated on actual hours worked not the employees contract.

Incorrect.
Actual Annual Leave entitlements are based on contracted hours, however payment should be based on average earnings including overtime, but that’s not always clear cut.

Speaking of Tesco many Tesco Express in my area are having to close during hours they are supposed to be open due to staff shortages.

Speaking to the staff in my local one the hours, pay, terms and conditions are so bad many quit after a few weeks and the reputation is now so bad they can't get people to apply.

Staying in Bloomsbury next week and there’s a Tesco there
I’m going to see if they can understand the English I speak
I spoke to someone near Griffin Park once as I was looking for a pub to meet Paul Holt
Didn’t speak a word of English
Tried three more and I couldn’t understand them
I drove home through Southall
It took me days to get over it
Another world

Poll: Christmas. Enjoyable or not

Ah Paul.

A magnanimous Pontardawe man and a true fierce Cymro both footy and rugger…

I was very upset I couldn’t make his funeral as I was riddled with gout at the time, a condition now managed thankfully with lifestyle changes and meds. I was in a bad way otherwise hell or highwater wouldn’t have stopped me.

3 fine sons are his legacy. Why do the good die young eh ?

Respect….

As somebody who works in the retail trade with a major Company , the contracts offered to newbies will be 8 hours per week , we cannot offer you any more sorry .

Universal Credit will be their next go to option for these youngsters .

And the hamster wheel keeps turning for them in their career path to make good of themselves making an effort to work .
