The speech that keeps on giving 09:56 - May 2 with 1607 viewsJoesus_Of_Narbereth

I know I’ve posted this about a thousand times already but with news that Keir Starmer’s niece has been parachuted into a safe seat in Croydon in the place of more experienced local candidates I thought it was appropriate for everyone to read again. Keep in mind this was his major pitch for government on the eve of the election when he was chasing your vote.

“ to change Britain, we must change ourselves.

We need to clean up politics. No more VIP fast lanes. No more kickbacks for colleagues. No more revolving doors between Government and the companies they regulate. I will restore standards in public life with a total crackdown on cronyism.”

Here’s the whole thing if you fancy a laugh:

Nepotism is alive and well sadly it'll never change, you see it constantly on the tele with actors/singers siblings suddenly bursting onto our screens.

In yet another example of cronyism and vip fastlanes, Gordon Brown and Harriet Harman has just been parachuted into top number 10 roles.

When is this going to end?

This why anyone new with any political talent aren't getting through the system and we are getting stuck with clueless career politicians look at the mess Starmer and Reeves and Co are creating.

The move to appoint GB is sensible.
If you have an issue or need someone with expertise on a particular subject - in this case global finance it makes sense to bring someone in who has knowledge and experience of the problems which are likely to be encountered.
While I’m no fan of GB, the way he dealt with the 2008 financial crisis is widely regarded by many experts. I’d rather GB than some inexperienced SPAD.

Brown bailed out the banks without any recourse.

We sit on a pile of debt and watch the UK Banks make billions and billions of profit.

If he was such a genius he would not have sold off a pile of gold at the bottom of the market or cranked up in work benefits to such an extent that the state now effectively subsides the low pay of employers.

He also oversaw an explosion in PFI spending cynically passed off as "investment" that our grandkids will be paying for.

Easy to look like a good chancellor when you just spend spend spend, harder for those who have to pick up the mess

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

I think commentators are now realising that our recent financial difficulties relate back to 2008, I'd spread it a bit wider to a whole host of Blair/Brown decisions.

In no particular order.

Pensions
Housing
Benefits, subsidising employers
PFI and the NHS
Immigration
National Debt

He sold off gold for peanuts or give it away, somin like that and it would be worth billions today somin like 30 billion or more. great he wasn't.

Between 1999 and 2002, then-Chancellor Gordon Brown ordered the sale of nearly 400 tonnes of UK gold reserves, representing over half of the country's holdings. Sold in a series of auctions at an average price of around ($275) an ounce, the move aimed to diversify reserves but is often deemed one of the worst financial decisions in British history, missing out on massive price surges in the subsequent two decades.Key Details of the Sale:Amount Sold: 395–401 tonnes of gold.Total Held: Roughly 715 tonnes.Sale Price: Approximately ($3.5) billion USD, or roughly (£2.14) billion at the time.Timing: The sales occurred at 20-year low prices, earning the nickname "Brown's Bottom".Reasons Behind the Sale:Diversification: The Treasury sought to shift from gold to better-performing assets like US dollars, Euros, and Yen.Gold Performance: Gold had been in a 20-year bear market, and the government believed its volatility made it a poor store of value.Market Transparency: The 17 auctions were announced in advance, which allowed the market to prepare, but critics say this suppressed the price.Impact and Legacy:Lost Value: Critics note that if held, the gold would be worth over (£40) billion to (£50) billion more as of 2025/2026.Criticism: The decision is frequently criticized for ignoring warnings from the Bank of England and selling at the market bottom.Defences: Supporters argue that the move was in line with international advice at the time and was intended to reduce risk from a single asset.

Yep. You can trace a significant majority of the problems facing the UK today back to Blair's Government and the spread amongst Civil Service, Police, Education etc of those who think like him.

What a time then to bring Gordon Brown back into the fold - you couldn't make it up.

Sorry but no it is not. Brown has knowledge and experience in causing problems, not fixing them.
