Last season’s pre season was the same, poor performances that carried on into the start of the season and led to Sheehan leaving I hope we’re not going back down that road

However It gives Matos a look at the new players and fringe players for him to assess who capable and suits his system. From that point of view it may not be a bad thing.

As early in last season lots of young inexperienced faces at Championship level. Presume Matos will again start with players as much as possible the ones that finished in the team at the end of last season where possible. Hope Stamenic gets a few minutes in the existing friendlies but it will be interesting to see in what position/role he will be expected to play? I liked to see him playing a more forward role in the midfield, by that I mean that he will get covered whenever he gets forward from deep, at the moment I cannot see who will allow him to do that from the existing midfield players we have, that ensure the whole team can play further forward without getting caught on the break. That player would have to cover our fullbacks as well which would mean he would have to be defensively strong and have pace, physically strong and have good ball control to help us play out from the back. Hopefully someone could surprise me and fit the role.

I disagree about Cullen and cooper, both need some encouragemnet, as both been "sidelined" Chances are stoke will be ready for it, I just hope we are, yesterday game reminded me of Coopers game at Plymouth I think it was, ......zilch!

Would we be spending the money we are on midfielders if Cullen and Cooper were any good and the club thought they were the future.

Cullen has been a good clubman but isn’t good enough at Championship level,he runs about pointing to others and flicking his hair ,the odd goal and not much else , We really need to have more ambition than playing him | | | | Login to get fewer ads

What you say is right but unfortunately a club we cannot afford to have 2-3 first team players for each position. Therefore the likes of Cullen and certain others will be good for coming on later in games. If we start them over more suitable players then it will be open to criticism. From what I can see, we haven’t a squad to get promoted at the moment. As I’ve said as nauseum, a CH partnership of Cabango and Burgess won’t get us enough points. Ronald in the wing will not deliver balls for others to knock in. I saw nothing in that friendly to inspire me and I realise the usual caveats must be taken into account but even so…

All the encouragement in the World won't disguise the lack of skill required for this level displayed by both. It's been obvious with both of them for a number of years. Cullen masked it with his knack for scoring goals, but Cooper is clearly no use for anything other than coming on and charging around with ten minutes left. If we have any kind of promotion ambition, neither of them should be anywhere near the first team next season.

Agreed. Ronald, Cullen , Cooper and possibly Key should go. What worried me yesterday was it was like a flashback to last years pre season with little idea what to do with the ball than pass it backwards. It just exposes Key and Cabango’s limitations and we don’t really want to be doing that.

At the risk of sounding like a stuck record, that deep midfield role is absolutely vital to us. That player covers the back line, but also sets the tempo. He gives your defensive players passing options. He moves the ball out of our defensive third further up the pitch. He is the link between defence and midfield, and after losing Galbraith I don't think we have another one at the club. Fulton and Stamenic can do bits of it, but they can't do the tempo setting part well enough often enough. Without that your attacking players are getting the ball 5-10 seconds later than they should be. That's an eternity of time when you're trying to go forward. It's the difference between having plenty of space and facing settled defences. A good sized chunk of the reason why our wingers so often struggle is because of it.

It seems all /most of the players that have come in are midfield players, and this season we shall see if they were the right ones.

He hasn't played for Wales for the last three games not even in the squad the last two. With such a small pool of players it speaks volumes.

Yep. And lets be honest, the general standard of International football is lower than the Championship. For every France/Belgium/Whoever Wales will play in a group, there's are several Azerbaijans, Cypruses or San Marinos. Being an International in and of itself is not all that impressive, especially when, as you say, Wales don't have an awful lot of alternatives.

In fairness Chris Gunter was an international being one for Wales is not necessarily a recommendation

Last season we sufferd by not having a big enough/good enough sqaud, this season looks to be a real test. we need suitable players as back ups for injury, especially as we have a few international players, who may get injured or worn out.

Exactly my point when referencing Stamenic, Don't see him commanding the deep midfielder role unless there is help from others.

If you're looking for a combative midfielder in a game where you know it's going to be a battle, and The Championship certainly doesn't lack for those, then I'd be quite happy to have either him or Fulton in the side. I do think Jay moves the ball better and with more intent when we ask him to do so, but really we can't be relying on either to fill that role going forward.

We saw improvements in both Widell and Stamenic last season or you could call it getting up to speed with Championship football. I quite liked it when Stamenic gets closer to opposition box seemed to have an eye for the right pass, shot or driving forward to commit defenders we didn't see it very often and as for Fulton he has a lot of valueable experience which in games you could see him trying to relay to Stamenic and Fulton has come up with a number of goals himself. If you look at what O'Brien offered us under Sheehan initially we saw a level of understanding of the midfield that saw him get the ball forward quickly, getting himself into the box to get on the end of things, and keep the midfield tight in defence able to turn a defensive situation into an attacking one with his close control as the games required but that dropped off when Sheehan tried to play him higher up the park almost as if he struggled waiting for the ball to get to him. While Fulton and Stamenic have an aerial presence which is great once that area of the game is needed, in the midfield the tracking of those fast dynamic opposition midfielders causes them problems maybe Fulton had to learnt to get tight to players in his early days which he had started latterly to struggle with alongside Grimes, but seems to have found his feet again a new vigour but maybe tires playing 90 minute games especially at congested periods and the game has seen what a difference the extra substitutions make in that central midfield area as well as previously seen, changing the wingers under Rodgers or changing a forward. With 5 subs the game can be changed if the substitutions are not matched to either counter the attacking intent of the opposition or hold on to the lead as seen with England the difference of tactics against both France and Argentina what changes are made can have successful or dire results. Franco loss is a worry and yet last season some called for changes in the midfield that would have seen Franco drop to the bench. At the end of the day having that strength in depths can make such a difference but getting that starting line up right to ensure positive starts and keeping pressure on oppositions and killing games off has proven elusive but not as bad as previous seasons. We need that combatative element in the midfield but often that is helped with good understanding of what your team mate is going to do so you can react accordingly especially when teams try and put pressure on you, obviously that stands in all areas of the pitch. With the loss of Galbraith and now Franco(initially) that midfield selection will be interesting to see. [Post edited 23 Jul 7:13]
